That's me and my best friend, Travis. (He's the one on the left.) He's a gamer, just like you and I --- He's even the one who first introduced me to the wondrous place called Destructoid. :P He has an account here, but he's not much of a blogger. He's more of a stalker, and he reads a ton on this site. Yes, we're both creepy-looking and I apparently have demon eyes.
A few years back, Travis was involved in a horrific accident, falling about 40 feet off a cliff and into a waterfall. Luckily, his cell phone worked even though it had been completely submerged in the water, and he was able to call for help. However, he paid quite a price --- He is now paralyzed from the waist down after his legs were crushed by the fall.
Just recently, Travis found a hospital in China that has created a special type of surgery specifically for this kind of condition. Since the accident is still recent enough, this surgery has a good chance of reversing its effects and allowing Travis to be able to walk again after the recovery process. Nothing would make both my friend and me happier than to see this happen. But things like this don't come cheap --- The entire ordeal will cost upwards of about $20,000-25,000. Not a small number, I'm afraid.
I have created a beneficiary fund at a local credit union (University Credit Union in Utah) in order to raise money to help Travis travel to China and get this surgery. I am begging all of you, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, to donate some money to this fund. I'm not asking you to break the bank and give me your life savings or anything --- Look at how many people are registered on Destructoid. Even a few dollars would be an immense help if everyone donated.
I know I don't know any of you on here personally, and I know this is kinda random to all of a sudden be asking you for money. But as you've read, it's for a very good cause, and I want to do whatever I can for my friend before time beats us and nothing can be done at all. I promise all of you, this isn't some kind of a Nigerian scam or anything --- I've contacted Niero personally and he gave me the okay to put this into motion, both in the cblogs and the forums.
If you're willing to donate any money, please send a PayPal payment to travis_fund@hotmail.com. If PayPal is an issue, just let me know if you still want to donate and we can figure something out.
Please forgive me if this gets reposted, or if this in fact is a repost. I just want to make sure everyone reads it. Thank you all again for being here and reading this message. Please, don't hesitate to PM me if you have any questions at all. I know some of you are already on my PS3 Friends List, too, so you can send me a message on there, too.
UPDATES BELOW
Here is Travis' MySpace page. His page has a few pictures from after his accident, including a very nasty scar down his back. Also, Travis uploaded a video of one of the local news reports for me to put up here.
Just sent pretty much my entire paypal account. It seriously would just be sitting there for awhile or eventually go to games so you're much better off having it.
Done! Did the same as Viralhunter my paypal is empty now. It may seem a pretty random amount of money but that because of the conversion from € to $. Keep us posted buddy.
I'm making pretty good money at my job right now, so its no biggie. I know if I couldn't walk I'd be hysterical so if theres a chance for someone to recover then I'll do what I can. Besides, we gamers need to stick together :)
I just saw your donation, Takeshi. Thank you so much for taking the time to do that. :)
And yes, Viral, I'd do the same. He's been crazy-strong for the situation he's in. I still remember the first time I brought the Wii to his house on launch day --- He loved being able to bowl and golf again. It was an awesome sight.
Hey, Takeshi... I just logged into my PSN and tried to accept your request, and it said I couldn't because it was already canceled. Was that a network error? Feel free to send me another invite.
Oh, and how's Soul Calibur IV, by the way? I was thinking of grabbing that with my next paycheck, but I have a hard time spending $60 on a game these days. It looks awesome, though.
I don't like to use paypal if I don't have to. Anyway you could pm me with an address? If so I will get a couple hundred bucks heading Travis' direction.
That icon is more of a demon than I am, so I don't feel as bad now. :P
Also, I sent you a PM. I sent you my address because I'm the one organizing this whole thing on several different websites, but if you'd like Travis' direct address, let me know. Either way, thanks again for your offer, it means a ton. :D
Actually, now that I think of it, you can earn the money by playing me in brawl sometime (or a 360 game if either of us ever get one back). I'll send a friend request your way when I get the chance.
Heh, you didn't come across like a sniveling bastard at all. :P No, I thought you meant you held like tournaments or something like that occasionally, and that it was a good way for me to try to get more money for the fund. I'm definitely up for playing for fun. If we play Smash, that'll honestly be like the second time I've played a Wii game online (the first time being Mario Kart).
Honestly it would be the same for me, the first time just playing a couple rounds of brawl with a friend from college. I need to bust the dusty thing out as well seeing as my 360 is dead with a worn off serial number (damn you MS and your repair policies!!!)
And sorry for the double post but have you tried asking for this to be on the front page? I think a little heartfelt sympathy from one of the editors will bring them to their senses.
I told Niero about it, so if he wants to front-page it, that'd be absolutely amazing, but I don't want to force it on the editors. Hamza has been good to me in the past, so it would be cool if I saw it promoted later on. :)
Hi everybody! I just got done reading through all the comments, good wishes, and donations. I wanted to thank you all and publicly embarrass Pedrovay by telling everybody here what a good friend he is and I wouldn't know what to do with out him. If you guys want to friend me to either here at Destructoid or on XBox Live at Oblivion718. I'm so glad I pointed Pedrovay to this community and he has been prominent enough to reach such good people as the lot of you. Don't be humble about your help. It takes a big heart to help a complete stranger. And if this all works out maybe I can play the drums on Rock Band and try out Wii Fit.
Oh, and if any of you have any other ideas that Pedrovay and I can do to make this process faster that would be awesome. Gamers are some of the most creative people I know. Pedrovay, maybe you can use Heretic's idea and point them in this direction for validation. Again, thanks everybody for what you do.
I wanna help out. just cause well.. I seem to give money when I really shouldn't.
I don't have much to give. But I figure it's always the thought that counts. Plus at times when I see people handicapped or just no legs/paralyzed, makes me wonder how grateful to have my legs and play DDR alittle longer than I should.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
about me
Name: Peter
Home State: New York
Currently Residing In: Utah
Birthday: October 13th, 1985 (I'll always secretly consider the NES to have been a birthday present to me from Nintendo.)
As far as video games go, I've been a gamer since I was two-and-a-half. I try to play whatever interests me, despite what other people think of those games. I don't consider myself to be a "casual" gamer, but I also don't take games unbelievably seriously. They're games, after all. They're meant to be enjoyed, not obsessed over. I never base whether I buy a game or not on a single review -- I have to try the game for myself to be totally sure.

Also, I'm on a crusade to help my paralyzed friend walk again. Check this out to learn how you can help, and here's the Facebook group. I'd like to send a big thank you to all of you who have already donated --- It means a lot to both of us. Unfortunately, this probably won't be a short-term thing --- It may be over a year before Travis can make it to China for the surgery. If any medical conditions should arise before that time (knock on wood that nothing happens), the donated money will be used to help pay for any bills if needed. Again, thank you all.

@viralhunter
Oh my God... I don't know what to say. Thank you so much for doing this.

You're welcome bro. Now accept your PSN invite so we can check if you're not buying new games with that money! :D
Hey, Takeshi... I just logged into my PSN and tried to accept your request, and it said I couldn't because it was already canceled. Was that a network error? Feel free to send me another invite.
Yeah I know it does that sometimes. I see you online now so it worked.
Ah, okay. Hmm, I thought your name was Takeshi at first... I wonder who I just resent an invite to, then... :P
Oh, and how's Soul Calibur IV, by the way? I was thinking of grabbing that with my next paycheck, but I have a hard time spending $60 on a game these days. It looks awesome, though.

Also, you're a good man Takeshi!
Sorry for triple post, but Viralhunter is also the man!
@ Ha-Puken
So many mans!! I can't handle it!
@Pedro
I've just started Soul Calibur and it looks quite good. I'm a bit rusty because of Tekken 5.
@Ha-Puken

@Heretic
Ooh, that's a good call. I just put it up on there.
Ah, I will probably be able to give something by the end of the week. I need to get paid first.
@Nintendoll
That's awesome, and I really appreciate that. :)
Also, the Cheap Ass Gamer thing didn't go so hot. I'm not active it that community at all, so I never saw the word "scam" typed up so many times. :(
Actually, now that I think of it, you can earn the money by playing me in brawl sometime (or a 360 game if either of us ever get one back). I'll send a friend request your way when I get the chance.
@Viral
Whoa, is that a regular thing you do?
What? No, I didn't mean in like competition or anything for cash. I just meant playing for fun sometime.
I didn't mean to come off like a sniveling bastard if that's how it sounded.
@Viral
Heh, you didn't come across like a sniveling bastard at all. :P No, I thought you meant you held like tournaments or something like that occasionally, and that it was a good way for me to try to get more money for the fund. I Do not have a Paypal account, but I wish you the best. :) I hope your friend gets the surgery for this,.
@Victor
Thanks. :) It's completely fine, and I thank you for the concern and well-wishes.

Just in case there's actually any confusion at this point, Oblivion's Travis.
You may all carry on now. :P
@Shin Oni
I really appreciate your thought. :) It truly is the thought that counts, so just know that it's indeed appreciated.
Hey I'm transferring money into my paypal now, so when I say by the end of the week I mean it it this time =P
@Nintendoll
:D I'd hug you if the Internet gave me the technology to do that. :P
@Pedrovay2003
I'd hate to see what else you would do with that technology.Thanks for the thoughts Shin Oni and I believe in you Nintendoll.
@Oblivion
Oh man, you really don't want to know... You reeeeealy don't want to know.
Thank you very much Nintendoll! Very generous.
