WHY DO YOU MOCK ME?!?
(Okay, before people start with their OMG XBOX FANBOY garbage, keep in mind that I sold my 360
in favor of a PS3, so any of those comments are irrelevent. I'm just dishing out criticism.)
When I first heard of
Borderlands, I was a bit interested, but not nearly as crazy for it as everyone else got. Now it's out, and while I'm still interested, I still won't be dropping
everything to go out and grab it, but I may pick it up soon. However, something has come to my attention concerning the PS3 version that makes me wonder if I should do anything but rent it.
I've played more than enough FPSs this generation, and having that genre mixed with RPG elements sounds good. Diablo with guns? Yes, please. But the thing that
really got my attention was the inclusion of split-screen play for up to two people.
I. Freaked.
Out.
Not
nearly enough games nowadays support split-screen, so when my friend told me that he'd been playing that for a few hours, I almost instantly went out to grab the game. But then I found something out about the PS3 version -- Something that's been plaguing the console's multiplatform games for years, and is one of my biggest gripes with the PS3 -- The lack of multi-profile support.
You can't log into more than one PlayStation Network ID at a time. You know what that means? If you copy your game save to a friend's console and try to load your character, you won't be able to. If your friend is logged into his/her profile to play as his/her character and you go to play as Player 2, you can only load any characters
also saved to your friend's save file. Your save -- sitting on the console -- is useless until the logged-in profile is switched to yours, which would immediately leave your friend's character worthless while you continue to play.
The 360 version? Put it on a memory card and pop it in. Hey, you're done!
I don't understand why this is so difficult to do...
What the hell, people? I know there aren't many local PS3 multiplayer games, but this is a huge issue if you ask me. The only PS3 game that actually works with all the profiles simultaneously is
LittleBigPlanet, in which you could move your characters
anywhere and play as them as if you were playing on your own console.
NO OTHER GAMES ALLOW THAT. If one developer can do it, then why is every other developer on the planet so lazy? Or hell, why did Sony make the OS work that way in the first place when they had over a year to copy the 360's features?
I absolutely love my PS3. I really do. But this is a much bigger priority than any cross-game chat crap -- Multiple PSN ID support is a necessity at this point. I swear, consoles today have so many little issues that sometimes I don't know how anyone could possibly think they're better than last generation's machines.
(Can you tell I'm pissed off?)
... the other annoyance is that even if you change the character's name... the name over both our heads is still the PSN name Elsa - a bit annoying to see my husband's big hulking Brick character named "Elsa" too. :(
Somehow.
Honestly, I totally agree with you. I know the PS3 is really meant to be played by yourself, but come on. I don't think every one of my friends should be forced to buy a console for a split-screen game. It's something Microsoft's had for years, over a year before Sony's console came out. I don't understand it.
@Mushman
Did they actually get that working in Resistance 2? I know it was being thrown around, but I thought it was canned because it wasn't possible with the current XMB. That's awesome if it actually works. I still say specific companies shouldn't have to do it, though -- It should be built into the actual operating system.
Oh, I completely agree, it's the OS that's built into the PS3. I just figure if Media Molecule and, apparently, Insomniac can do it, then Borderlands should have it, too. But I completely agree, Sony needs to fix this problem immediately.
Another issue with this is Trophies -- How are Trophies supposed to compete with Achievements if only one person can earn them at a time?
I got the game a year after it came out (cheap games WHEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!) and updated it as soon as I booted it up. Multi psn account sign in was there, and me any my nephew use it a lot, especially for coop. I have no idea if it was present before any patches, sorry!
I don't know if you're mocking the concern or not, but to each his own -- This is a legitimate thing to complain about, and I'm obviously not alone.
Yea seriously, forget the PS3 version at this point: I was considering it, but there's no way now considering my wife and I couldn't have our own accounts.
@Magnalon- Yeah. Me and your wife better have our own accounts too.
Multi-profile support should absolutely be an option for current generation consoles.
back in the day it was cool, cause we were kids and hand no cars or anywhere to go. so having friends over was multiplayer fun.
but now online kinda killed it, and with newer games grfx it always seemed to suffer in split screen games. just wasnt quite the same. also hard to see if it wasnt an FPS. then they started to change it to vertical split after a while. some had ways to change it. oh well.
but this does seem like a cool game for local splitscreen.
Most of the time I find myself playing alone as well, but I will never, EVER get tired of having split-screen support in my games. I can't tell you how many times I've been a part of split-screen sessions of Unreal Tournament 3 and Left 4 Dead. There's nothing like having everyone in the same room.
That's why I don't mind the Wii's online sucking so much -- It was made for people to be in the same room, just like the split-screen feature in Borderlands was. This split-screen doesn't work, though. But that's a Sony issue, not Gearbox.
Considering I haven't even stopped playing this game since I got it and have been having a blast online with fellow Dtoiders, I would say your assessment is a bit steep. I haven't even noticed it but I haven't cared about split-screen since the first Halo.
Though, I really wouldn't play a game like Borderlands in split screen. Playing any non-multiplayer game in split screen is a total no-no for me. I still understand your frustration. Unlike other people.
I couldn't really think of a term other than "watered-down," but I do believe this is actually a deal-breaking issue for me, personally. No doubt I'd play it online most of the time, but the fact that split-screen is there and totally butchered in my opinion is something that's stopping me from grabbing it right now. I'll have to rent first.
I don't like it, but I can understand why a developer might not bother to include multi-profile support on the PS3 version of their game.
I just hate it that someone decided splitscreen isn't common enough so why bother. Bad choice. Same thing bothered me in the past about Sony consoles when they decided to remove the ability to use the link cable and stopped supporting it. I don't have fast enough internet where I live to play online all of the time and I play splitscreen a lot. I'm just glad my friends can use their separate profiles to do so on my 360.
To be fair to the PS3, you can download your profile onto other consoles as well. I just chose the memory card example because your save game doesn't come with you when you download profiles.
