Phone in one hand, Controller in the other: RE5 demo co-op
pascuz46 | 10:15 PM on 02.06.2009 9 comments

This post is a bit short but I think its straight to the point.
I've wait to play Resident Evil 5 for a long time and as soon as February second hit I was downloading the Resident Evil 5 demo on my PS3. After reading some of the complaints about the demo on D-Toid, my anticipation deflated a bit, however when the ps3 owners where able to play the demo, I enjoyed it. I played it offline and I also played it online with random people. Both experiences where great and my time I spent with the demo was very rewarding. But tonight I played the RE5 demo with a friend and it was AMAZING! I've been planing to play RE5 with my buddie for a while and tonight we had the time to do it. After figuring out how the hell we could play together we eventually started up a game in Shanty Town. It was an intense fight against the a villagers and the chainsaw guy, but we made it through. What really helped was the fact that I was on the phone with him the entire time talking about devising a strategy on how to stay alive against an endless horde of crazed villagers. After a couple tries we eventually beat that level and moved on to the next level: Public Assemble, while I moved on to a portable speaker phone because my neck was cramping up. This was an amazing experience for me because having your friend to talk too while your playing RE5 makes the experience so much better. I don't own a headset and never really wanted too until tonight. Resident Evil 5 is meant to be played with friends and if you can talk to them somehow you should. Grab a phone get there number or if RE5 is headset compatible use that. This enriches the experience to a level that I have never had with previous RE games. If your skeptical about this game, try this out it might change your mind. While I was already sold on the game before the demo came out but playing with my friend has made me want this game much more now. Alot has been said about the co-op element about the game, but I love it because of this reason. It is a great way to play Resident Evil 5, try it out!

After figuring out how the hell we could play together...

Is there actually a way to play this with people you choose instead of just random people? I couldn't find it for the life of me.

yes there is, this is for the ps3 version. Both of you have to be in re5 demo, and hopefully you'll have the latest update because you have use in game xmb. Anyways, after you select online single player if you hit up about "host game" you can choose from randoms (free) or friends (partner). Then after you select host game with those filters it will say "send invit" press the PS button down to get in game xmb and move over to your friends avatar, click triangle and you will see "Invite friend" send the message. When he gets the message he has to go into his in game xmb and select your avatar press triangle and select "accept invit". From there your friend will be asked if he wants to leave something click yes, then hit enter again because another screen will come up and there you go. You can play RE5 online with only your friends. Hope to god that was simple enough, it took me time to figure it out too, but it does work.

This game's co-op is awesome even if the networking is janky(on both systems). Hell, it has better co-op mechanics than L4D.

@pascuz46

Good Lord, Capcom couldn't make it a little simpler than that? Thanks for the info!

I really love the invite system in this game. Also, get a headset meng, even if you can only afford a wired $10 one, it's totally necessary for online games.

brainderailment speaks the truth. USB headsets are really cheap... I grabbed the Sony Bluetooth one that came with SOCOM, and I couldn't be happier.

@ Pedrovay- It seems like alot of steps, and it is, but once you to it, its really easy.
@ Brainderailment- I didn't know you could plug in a USB headset into you ps3, I will have to tell my friend that cause he has one. As for me I'm thinking of getting the head set that comes with Socom, but if I can get a weird usb headset I might get that depending on the cable length.

Sounds good, can't wait till Capcom brings this to the Wii in 2010...

Maybe you should pick up Warhawk with the headset, not sure if that bundle is still for sale but you loved that game and the value seems pretty good with the hardware.

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
So true, man! Well said, my friend!
For all the naysayers... You need to play this game online, with a damn friend and headsets! You will find it to be an amazing, co-op experience, unlike other co-op game! Teamwork is a must!
If you don't think so, then you are dumb... Real dumb.
High five, Capcom! You're the best!
Yee!
March 13th! Hurry up!

Also, yeah - Capcom could have made the online with a friend deal a bit easier to activate! But, I'm sure you guys figured it out... Right?! You're not dumb...

INFO

Hey everyone, I'm a Canadian film student currently enrolled in university, and I love video games. Yes I know! there was a surprise! I also like film, TV, music, popular culture and destructoid.

Current console:

The one I use the most is PS3, not so much my PSP
Before that i had a PS2, PS1, and a Sega Genesis

My all time favorite games and or game series

Well top of the list, if you haven't guessed from my avatar is Metal Gear Solid Series. Yes everyone one of them, even MGS2 although MGS: portable ops really isn't that good, but i don't count that. I also do not count Metal Gear Ac!d. If You want a really good MGS portable game, find Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel online for Game Boy Colour. Im sure there's a rom somewhere. Kojima kicks ass!
God Of War Series. All Hail David Jaffe And Kratos!
Twisted Metal: Black
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
Burnout Series: 3 was the best one but paradise comes in at a close second
BioShock
The Orange Box
Sonic 1 and 2 (Genesis)
X-men 2: Clone wars (Genesis)
Call Of Duty 4: my favorite FPS, however i would like to thank the guys from Epic who got me hooked on FPS games with the original and the best unreal tournament for PC.
Resident Evil 4 (Common! who doesn't like this game!)
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
Mortal Kombat 2 (For 2D) and Mortal Kombat: Deception (For 3D)
Age Of Mythology

And that's all i can think of right now.

Currently Playing:

Uncharted 2
Left 4 Dead
Battlefield 1943

Games I Cannot Wait for:

God of War 3 (obviously)
God Of War Collection
Assassins Creed 2
MAG
