I own all 3 of the current gen systems, and while I love my PS3, I am really starting to get pissed off with something it does. When I bought my PS3, I got the 40 gb version because it was what I had the money for. When I bought it at the time I had heard that some games, such as Metal Gear Solid 4 and Devil May Cry 4 were starting to require mandatory hdd installs. Now, at the time I thought nothing of it and thought those two were special cases. Now, it seems like anytime I see a game I would like to get on PS3 rather than 360 there seems to be a mandatory install of about 3-5 gb.
When I bought my PS3, I thought it would take me a good 2-3 years before I got it even close to being full. Now, owing games such as MGS 4, Fallout 3, Skate 2 and Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm, my hdd is practically full. Its gotten to the point where the hdd installs are becoming a huge factor in whether or not I buy a game on PS3. In fact there's several games, such as Resident Evil 5, HAWX and Wanted: Weapons of Fate that I much rather would have bought on the PS3, but instead bought on my 360 due to an install of 3-5 gb.
And now its starting to get to the point where some games don't even tell you if there is a hdd. I just bought Wheelman the other day because I enjoyed the demo and it was on sale for $40. Before I bought it I took a look at the required hdd space and it said it required 2990 kb. However, I went to put it in and had to delete some items from my hdd drive because it needed an extra 5 gb for an install. Way to fucking let me know that before hand Ubisoft.
Now I know that Sony has no problems with people upgrading their hdd's, but I hate the fact that it seems more like something we the consumers are forced to do just to be able to play games on the system. The hdd installs are starting to become a huge pain in the ass for people (such as myself) who isn't exactly in a rush to upgrade our hdds. The worst part about the installs is that we have no say in them. If a developer wants to force a 5 gb install on us we have no choice but to take it. It'd be great if the games that do force the install could follow the example that Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Unreal Tournament 3 did, offer optional installs.
So, in short, hdd installs suck, are a bane on the PS3, and I hope the people who keep thinking that they're a good idea get eaten by The Great Khali.

you forgot to mention KZ2 which looks amazing and yet has no install. otherwise yeah, its a problem but theres no solution other than guerilla games witchcraft.
Without those Hard Drive installs you would likely be staring at 10 minute load screens instead.
I think its a good idea to just give it to me! :]
I agree with Chronoswing. Blu-ray is great, but they can't be read as quickly as DVDs. Installs are there to make the game function better.
I get what you mean about upgrading the PS3's hard drive, but the fact of the matter is that they're dirt cheap at this point. You can easily find a 320gb hard drive for under $100. Yes, that's extra money spent, but try to find a 360 hard drive for that price --- The 360's hard drive can also fill up pretty quickly if you download a ton of games.
Um...
2.5" 250gb HDD = $50-$60 (Same price as a single game)
If I were you, the next time I aqcuired enough to purchase a game (If you don't have a steady income, that is) I would pick one of these up. Not only does this not void your warranty, Sony condones it. I highly recommend investing in one of these, even if you don't want 250gb; there are cheaper, lower capacity HDDs available.
so upgrade or don't play. unless you have dlc for a game why not erase them when you need to? i know the issues regarding it but still, shit or get off the pot. i upgraded my 60 just because i wanted linux (which eats 10 gigs) and my 60 was full many times and was left with the decision to get rid of stuff. demo's and videos are the real killer.
I also have the 40GB model and after about a year I can now say it's too small. Sure I can remove content but I want games I can just pop in and play any time. Will be buying a 500GB soon..
My issue with installs, patches, and firmware updates is that they're far too fucking frequent and take way too much time. It's ridiculous. I remember a while ago I hadn't turned on my PS3 in a while. I had just purchased Burnout Paradise. It took me at least 25 minutes to install a new firmware (with pointless new features) and install a patch. A patch that would probably take seconds to install on my XBOX, and same thing with the firmware.
Firmware updates are few and far between on XBOX, and that's great. And they also take a 5 or 10 seconds. Sony's infrastructure for the PS3 and PSP are on some fucked up level. And it's been 2 years since they've promised us fixes as well as something that would compete with Live. As far as I'm concerned, it isn't even in the same league.
@Vexed Alex: Sony is only creating a better experience for their customers. Although, many may complain about the questionably useless firmware updates, you really have to consider that the company isn't being funded by their fans to perform these updates; therefore, updates will occur frequently in order to improve the already great online experience Sony has developed. Microsoft has the funding necessary (Xbox live) to provide an entirely new interface.
I could go on a long rant about this, but really I really don't feel like it. Also, that firmware update took me literally 3 minutes to download and install...
What's wrong with having large updates that have some meat to them instead of doing worthless ones frequently? And how is it a smart move to have your customers download the entire operating system, instead of just installing and replacing patch files?
Sony's methods are sloppy, time consuming, and do very little to improve my experience. Having players pay for the online service is no excuse for poor decision making.
"updates will occur frequently in order to improve the already great online experience Sony has developed"
May I ask where this incredibly developed online experience is? I can't find it.
well, i find it every day without looking too hard.
same.
It's not sloppy, if anything it's far more secure to redownload a large portion of information you already possess that has been tested, than to just throw some features on. That's pretty obvious, but...you seem very determined to get into one of the cliche platform debates (or arguments) that occurs when someone has a complaint about a specific platform. I'm done.
Of course installs to reduce load times are sloppy programming. There are a quite a few games, that have almost no load times like Burnout Paradise and no installs. But I don't really care about installs anymore and I even install games to my 360 when I play them.
BTW: The Wheelman is a pretty terrible game.
I can't remember any firmware updates for the PS3 that bricked the system... I do, however, remember 1 or 2 that bricked the 360.
According to an interview on MTV's Multiplayer it isn't the BD drive that makes load times longer, it's the way data is put on the disc. The actual layout of information is optimized for a disc that varies in speed like DVD and rather than alter that or learn how to do it a better way, they make the game install some data.
It is a piece of technology. And yes I realize that it should be able to last a long time especially for the money, but things change. I spent a lot of money on my PC a number of years ago thinking it would last me longer. 250g hard drive when the hell am I ever going to need that much? But now its 90% full, and I don't do nearly as much downloading as some of my firends do.
As others have already pointed out here I picked up a 250GB HDD for the same price as one game... $60. Yeah it kind of sucks I guess... but it's really not that bad, and it's nice as hell to have so much space.
I have 40 blu-ray disc PS3 games and 56 downloadable games, and I still have 95GB free. It will last you a looong time. Just buy a new HDD.
