According to various sources, the average age of a gamer nowadays is approximately 30 years old. Although, logic and experience tells me that there is variance to that average age depending on the genre. Iím 34 years old and I still love to play games. Iím not sure if I will ever give them up, but my wife is definitely hoping one day I decide to put down the controller for good. I love to play all kinds of games, with strategy games being my favorite.
A few years ago, I wanted to try something different, so I started playing shooters. What first attracted me to shooters was the challenge. I got angry that I wasnít very good. So, I spent way too much time trying to get better and eventually I did. I would not say Iím great, but I think itís fair to say Iím above average. Well shooters seem to attract an endless supply of underage kids who probably shouldnít be playing mature games. I usually play alone or with a group of casual, older players.
Recently, I grew tired of being one of the better players on a losing team, so I started to look for a gaming clan to join to be more competitive. Well, itís tough finding a clan for older gamers. I found a couple that are PS3 only, but right now my PS3 is simply a media center (Netflix, Amazon VOD, Blu-ray, etc). Currently, my gaming platform of choice is the Xbox 360. I donít have anything against the PS3, but Iím just more comfortable with the Xbox (i.e. the controller, friend list, etc).
I did decide to join a clan, but it feels a little weird, being in a clan with a bunch of 17 year olds discussing what they got on their last biology test. Also, I can only imagine what a parent might think when they find out their child is talking to someone that much older. Creepy. So right now Iím contemplating either giving up online competitive, multiplayer shooters for good or becoming a lone wolf again. I donít really like either option, but Iím beginning to think its time to retire from the FPS genre.
