Historically I am actually against sequels. That is sequels that are made particularly to milk more dollars, cents and yen from gamers already empty wallets. We do not need Bioshock 2, the first game was pretty good but not good enough to have a complete series of 15 games following in its wet footsteps. Half Life did not actually need a sequel, although in restrospective I am pretty glad half life 2 was made.
I am rambling.
My point is - if making God of War 3 will result in us playing God of War 2 again, only with better graphics, a sequel is not necessary. The games I am abut to mention are games that had a lot of potential, almost made it but in the end was not mainstream enough to get a sequel. Games that could have been among the list of the best games ever, but the system for which they were created was bord with incurable cancer.
THE NEVERHOOD
I know, it actually had a "sequel". The sequel, simply named "Scullmonkeys", was NOT an adventure game but a plattformer released for the PlayStation. If you haven't played the original Neverhood, the game takes place in a world entirely made out of clay. You play as Clayman, a guy who wakes up in some sort of cell (although it takes no effort preaking out of the cell so I would actually call it a room with a very slow door). You soon realize that the city outside is completely deserted, and by picking up objects that I can only describe as videotapes you discover the reason for the desertation.
The Neverhood did suffer from some problems, mainly gameplay issues. The puzzles in the game were exactly that - puzzles. Not puzzles in the sense that normal adventures use the word, just puzzles. One puzzle is to help a mice through a maze, another is a classic shift-parts-of-apicture-to-form-a-bigger-picture (I'm sure that game has a name although I am not familiar with it). The problem with the game having these boring puzzles is that the rest of the game is absolutely amazing. It is one of the most beautifully designed games with environments that makes you want to roll in clay just so you can become an inhabitant of the Neverhood.
Another thing that makes this game great is the music. I am not talking epic scores a 'la Metal Gear Solid or beautiful melodies like in Braid, Iäm talking genious craziness.
Check this video out for some music samples and you might get the idea:
OMIKRON - THE NOMAD SOUL
Quantic dream hates gamers. They make good games, promise us two different sequels but eventually cannes both. They make games that start out amazing but when you have played the game for a logn tikme and you really like it, they forcefeed you their balls with shitty endings. Now they are working on a game that looks really good and sounds like everything we ever dreamed of, just one problem - its not Omikron 2.
Omikron was released for the PC and the Dreamcast in 1999. A virtual science fiction novel that let you explore a big, beautiful city and a twisting, interesting plot. One thing I really like about this game was the freedom. Since you were not actually playing any character, you were playing your own soul, you could leave your body and enter another one and therefore unlock new abilities, areas and weapons. Although this game only scraped the surface of the possibilities, I believe it was deeper than many reviewers understood.
When a sequel was announced I freaked out. I freaked out even more when it was canned. When a sequel was announced again I got my hopes up. My hope was lost again when it was canned.
Quantic Dream... STOP PLAYING WITH MY FEELINGS!
It is fucking late here in Sweden. Will this post get a sequel? Who nows... I dont...
What games would you like to see getting a sequel? Comment!
I keed, I keed. Seriously though, I would love to see a new Anachranox. That game was fucking amazing. Blew so many stereotypes out of the water. I'm just scared to see how badly it would be raped to create a game for the "new generation" of gamers.
Great list, and I hope there is a sequel (to your list about sequels).
Personally, I want more Sega sequels. More Panzer Dragoon, more Jet Grind Radio, more (proper) Shinobi, and a new Fighter's Mega Mix that plays like Smash Bros.
Sequels... Dynasty Warriors desperately needs a sequel.
I am still waiting for the sequel to Soul Blazer, Darkwatch (excellent game), and a Hitman game... where is all the info on a new Hitman game?
I have also been wanting a Square Enix Smash Bros. type of game. One that has characters from all of the games from both companies, like from FF-FFXIII, Actraiser, Soul Blazer, Dragon Quest games, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, The Bouncer, Bushido Blade, Illusion of Gaia, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Brain Lord, even throw in some Grandia.
You forgot Viewtiful Joe, Virtual On, Darkstalkers, Strider, and Rival Schools, but good call on the Neverhood! Skullmonkeys isn't bad though... Doug TenNapel's doing a Neverhood movie, so hopefully that will lead to a new game
@Squirrel - Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma are considered "spiritual sequels" to SoulBlazer. That's not to say I would mind a "direct" sequel though. :)
Killer Instinct , Perfect Dark (a real one this time) , Soldiers Heroes of WW2 , Dead Rising (Alreayd happening) , Marvel VS Capcom , Hitman , Max Payne...
Spiritual sequels are like brushing up against some nice breasts, as opposed to having sex with the owner of said breasts and enjoying them full-on. By that I mean... it is slightly enjoyable, but in a weird, "not quite what I was hoping for" kind of way.
I never finished Omikron (so much for my soul. hmm)
I am excited that the basic "soul jumping" mechanic kind of comes back in Hard Rain, wherein the story keeps going even if your first character dies. I wish those guys could put more than one game out per console lifecycle.
@Squirrel - You truly are a master of simile, sir. But continuing along those lines, I'm the type who considers himself lucky to have a boob-brushing opportunity, when the only realistic alternative is nothing at all. A sad state of affairs, but what can one do...
