Do Not Go To Kotaku
nopk | 2:12 PM on 05.02.2008 48 comments

I had suspected that our beloved news source Kotaku had become a bit Wal-Mart-ish recently, and my assumptions were reinforced today when I for giggles, asked why the inbreds that run the site insist on posting their livejournal conversations on the front page.

Immediately my account was banned from commenting.

Not that I regularly waste my time commenting on websites like that, I mean, I value myself enough to keep my internet arguments to Destructoid and AIM. I've always thought that the people who argue over Youtube or Digg comments were the type of people who had to use a song to remind themselves how to tie their shoes in their twenties. I was surprised to see that it was those exact people that turned out to be running one of the most popular gaming news sites on the interwebs.

So here we are, with the choice of reading Joystiq where they insist on posting news about how the lead developer for Call of Duty's house maid's cat died- or Kotaku where we have to sift through the livejournal of an overweight Indian weaboo making a complete fool out of himself in the middle of Japan.

Woe be to those sentient enough to want a reputable news source for games.

And don't say Destructoid, because Jim Sterling has the rights to post on the front page. And that is a catastrophe.

(Sike, I like Destructoid)

(But I'm serious about Jim)

(He's fat)

well yeah, they ban if you do that.

That's how they work.

Don't question the worthiness of their content. Its their blog site, after all.

Who would win? 100 two-hundred pound Youtube commenters, or 200 one-hundred pound Digg commenters?

Trick question, no Youtube commenter is less than 260 lbs.

The livejournal conversations they have on the front page are what they use to fill the gaps in their recaps section when they swap over posting editors so that it's more than just a list of posts, and I guess it's a vain attempt to show what they are like as people...

As for the banning they are really strict about what you can and can't say in the comments to try and keep out the trolls so they get less bitch fights than we do here in some of the frontpage articles

Most of the regs on that site are worst then the trolls, but they never get banned becuase they are the "Last Minute Blowjob Backups".

This is why I love Destructoid, gentlemen. People don't realize how spoiled we are here. All it takes to realize that fact is frequent another site and a splash of cold reality will wake you up.

Banned for freedom speech?? Pathetic. But then again it's their site and if they choose to mold it into a singular entity with the only allowable contributions are the ones they hand pick, they can do that.

Get over it. While I wish he didn't cover some of the articles he does (lets get someone else on the games-as-corruption defenseive team now and then, eh?)

Jim Sterling is tenacious in his coverage and doesn't afraid of anything.

Yeah that's true about the regs but I guess everyone loves to have a booty call...

@nopk:

What exactly are these other glaring faults of Mr Sterling you speak of? Maybe you just need to take him a little less seriously, you know kind of how you take a tabloid paper a little less seriously than a broadsheet newspaper.

Dtoid should get a shirt with a message like:

Destructoid: "We are Freedom of speech, b1tches!" and a Rick James Dtoid Robot silhouette in the bg or something alike.

Seriously, When Niero told me about Dtoid at the beginning (yep I was referred by the man himself) I saw it and quickly judged, meh, this is just another blog site like the rest. but then I started warming up to Dtoid, saw where it stood and the people ho come here are free to speak whats on their mind, without the fear of the blog police to hit you with the ban hammer.

I joined Kotaku after joining Dtoid just to check it out, let me put it this way, I voiced my opinions, and I think I lasted a month then got banned. I said well screw it, you can't even tell who's there and who is not, too many people all following the "I lick your balls posts of w/e the main bloggers say" mentality.

And if you even dare to make a post that contradicts theirs, say goodbye to your account. I have nothing against Kotaku, and sometimes they post good articles, but the few times I check their site and read peoples comments, thats what it is, and thats what they follow.

Kotaku has standards for their comments.

"Can I be banned from commenting?

Yes, if your comments are excessively self-promotional, obnoxious, or even worse, boring. There will be no warning, and no appeal. (For advice on good comment etiquette, check out Lifehacker's guide to weblog comments.)"

The fact that nopk can make this blog and comment about Jim Sterling in the way that he does is testament to the greatness that is Destructoid.

Of course, people can get out of hand and when that does happen a ban is in order, but it should never be made into a big event like Kotaku's "Ban Monday."

Hahahaha. If you're stupid enough to get banned from Kotaku then your comments were too stupid for anyone to care about.

Also, Destructoid and Kotaku are lovey dovey with eachother, (nevar forget Brian's Brass Balls) so I doubt you'll start a revolution of people not reading it.

I actually admire what Kotaku does- it allows for a lot less shit to sift through in the comments section. I think the same needs to be done here.

Did your comment actually call them inbreds? Insulting there posts and insulting them and there family are two different things entirely.

Kotaku doesn't have the same rowdy, fun-loving personality Destructoid has. And really, who needs Kotaku when you've got the 'toid?

@DaveKap: You can get banned at Kotaku for just about anything. Its actually like a dictatorship. If they dont agree with you even if its your opinion you will get banned. Dtoid is more fun cause it has actual freedom of speech and allows people to state their own opinions, unlike Kotaku.

The fact I can call Jim Sterling a fat and useless brit with bad teeth is an attestment to the fact that Destructoid is better than most.

Although I do think that he's wrong most of the time.

Dtoid is one of the few sites where I've actually bothered to make an account and comment regularly. I have no problem with Kotaku myself, and check it out from time to time... but it definitely lacks the personality that Dtoid has.
