I think one of the reasons people play MMOG's is to live in the lore that they've read about and lived in other games under the same brand.
From what I have played, the grind is what appealed to me. Well, not the actual work of leveling up, but more the rewards. Slowly working your way to another level, equipping better armor and stronger weapons, gaining new powers, etc.
I twitch gamer, skill is all I have! I can't plan ahead, or be patient, or any of that other stuff.
Despite having never once, never goddamn once caught up to my good friends in terms of gear, I always feel like I "can".

WoW, at least, is really fun with a group of friends. It's amazing. You and your buddies are kicking ass in a game where your character has been built up by you to be really unique and cool. And then when you're done, and you "win", your winnage persists in the form of gear or something. So it's not just 'yay, that was fun', it's 'yay, that was fun, now I am cooler!'.
