"nd fewer completely useless characters like Olimar."
I never knew a man could be so wrong and then posted this.
If I where to describe just how wrong you are I'd need to start speaking spanish, maybe even post some pictures of me doing sign language, only then would I have enough words to describe just how wrong you are.
I'll just say these things about Smash Brothers:
The first one was broken, but fun, of course.
Melee was one of the best fighting games ever made, and most likely one of the only extremely competitive games Nintendo ever put out.
Brawl was really fun, but was very disappointing for me because all my competitive friends still played Melee, due to how much deeper the fighting system was. Hell, all my local tournaments are still Melee: never Brawl.
Oh and Olimar is really good. That's the downfall/casual allure of Brawl. Every fighter is good: there's hardly a "real tier".
yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Except Olimar is completely useless. The original SSB is a nice addition to the VC lineup and is one of those rare cases where it's actually cheaper than getting the original.
yes... YES... THIS IS DELICIOUS!
I don't think any game series has taken more hours out of my life...
Wow, I think I may be the only person on Earth who actually thinks Brawl is far better than Melee.
Also, I want this on the US VC.
@Pedrovay: Allow me to challenge your position then. I'm with Mag (all of my friends played the epic hell out of Melee/swear by it/tournaments Melee only/wavedash), and it doesn't help I'm the only person I know with a Wii. We play Brawl when I drop by to visit, but that's it. At least half of my friends have a Gamecube so naturally Melee is the winning game here.
Bastards.
OK, I think we have an Olimar vs Everyone fight in the making here.
@Doomsday Forte
Tourneyfags, L-cancellers and wavedashers have no right to comment on Brawl as I see it. It's like Snakers complaining about Mario Kart Wii.
@pedrovay2003
Brawl is much better than Melee. You arent alone.
Hooray for Smash Bros hitting the Virtual Console! The N64 version is still the best version of the game made. It has the best levels, best physics, and was overall the most fun of them all. Plus all of the cool characters in the N64 one got nerfed when Melee came out, which sucked.
NJ Olimar's not like Pit, Ike, and Meta Knight. It actually takes some practice before you're good with him.
@Seph
Best version? I'd contend you mean most broken. The physics were horrible, and Ness' juggling combos were incredibly overpowered. At one point, I could take on 3 of my friends at a time, and no one could touch me in that game. They had to play Saffron City over and over so I couldn't PK Thunder my way up through the cracks.
Also, as far as the levels go, I'd say only Sector Z and Hyrule Castle were any good for balanced 4 player play.
All this aside, it's still my favorite, but I was able to play Melee for a much longer period of time because so many people actually wanted to get good at it. Sigh...I can't wait for the next Smash Brothers. I wish I lived near some of you guys, because I do like Brawl, it's just no one plays it.
@Magnalon
But the N64 version I still think is the only game in the series that had consistent physics. Smash attacks always sent people flying and you could properly judge the distances, throw able weapons/objects would always fly with the same velocity. The physics in Melee and Brawl feel like you're fighting at half gravity in some sort of weird semi jello like fluid. Because some times characters would fly off like there was a rocket strapped to their ass but other times they'd just fly about 10 feet away, even if they were at high damage %s. The same goes for jumping. In some ways the limitations of the N64 made Smash Brothers better.
And I'd content the N64 version is less broken then Melee ever was. In the original Pikachu and Ness were really the only two characters who threw off the balance of things, but even then they could still be dealt with. Learn how to use Link in close combat and all broken characters are done for.
Melee had the likes of Peach, Falco, and the ungodly broken Marth just for starters. This was also coupled with the fact that most of the effective moves from the original SSB cast were all tamed down.
Level wise, the original had Hyrule, Sector Z, the DK level, and Kirby's level (besides that annoying tree) as totally fun but basic levels.
Yea I can see that. Like I said, it's my favorite. While I absolutely hated the "Jello"-ness of Melee at first, I grew to like it because it gave the game more of a balance. Yea, Link was really good, but in my opinion, a jumpy, evasive Ness will beat him every time: just stay out of close combat range and poke him. But Melee had more top tier characters than N64 by a longshot! Marth was great, but don't forget Fox and Sheik as well as, like you said, Peach and Falco.
All this talk makes me want to play you...
Yay, I have supporters!
I do miss playing Melee, though, so I may have to hunt down another copy. As for the original Smash Bros., I played the hell out of it when it first came out, and I'd get it just for those memories.
So far I've liked each Smash Bros. more than the last, so I'll back you up too, Pedrovay.
I opened up a few wounds with this one I think.
i never was into the smash series didnt realy find them that entertaining and couldnt get the hang of it.
when brawl hitted i gave it another try and start playing it with my brothers.
my youngest brother played alot of melee so he knowed how to play.
after a couple of evening is was hooked , the fighting is realy simple but its one of the deepest fighting games there is even though it looks shallow at first sight.
i still plays a couple of games every week its that fun and complex.
Already own it. It started off the series so well, and it gave opportunities for stellar sequels.
I want it so bad, but i just cant justify having 2 copies.
Hey, this'll be something I pick up when I get a Points Card on the cheap. Always wanted to play this at NSTC speed.
Wish Nintendo would pull a sony and let me export the VC stuff to my DS :( Smash on the go is the only thing that could possibly pull me away for PSP Alpha 2
I remember when I first got this game. I woke up one school morning about an hour before school to my brother playing it and somehow looking like he knew what he was doing, even though he had never played it before.
