European Virtual Console: Song of Time Edition
njsykora | 6:44 AM on 04.03.2009 15 comments

You may have noticed that I only really do these update posts when something notable hits the European Virtual Console. The last one I did for example was put up when Secret of Mana was added. Well we have something really fucking notable this week.

1 and Only Game - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Nintendo 64 - 1000 Points

What, you're still here? Well OK I'll explain. Majora's Mask is the N64 Zelda that hasn't been rereleased nearly 6 times. Other than the original N64 cartridge there's the version on the Gamecube collectors disc that only came with a Wind Waker pre-order so unless you fancy hunting down the cart I recommend you download this immediately. Its not like you're starving for space anymore right? This is a game that almost nobody really understood when first playing it. The game world is fairly small and you only really have a few hours to play it, however the ability to play with time and gain the abilities of the Deku Scrub, Gorons and Zoras are what makes this game the most unique of all the Zelda games. If you have never played it then you owe it to yourself to give it a go, there is very little else like it. This deserves to take its place amid your VC games under the tag 'Solid Fucking Golden Classics'.

This is excellent news- it's a shame that I no longer have my Wii- I would have been all over this one. I never played 'Majoras Mask' back when it came out either- looks like I never will..

This is actually my favourite Zelda. I acknowledge OoT as the better game, but I'm personally more fond of this.

I think it had a lot more personality/characterisation to it than Ocarina of Time, and that was its biggest draw for me.

That said, I won't be downloading this. I have the GC Collector's Edition twice and the original gold cart which I dig out and play probably bi-annually.
njsykora's Destructoid Blog
Yeah, I'd love to download it but I also have the Collectors Edition disc and am halfway through it so I can't really justify it to myself.
CALkulon's Destructoid Blog
YES!

Woah, I know what I'm doing this weekend (aside from working). I've been waiting for this game forever considering it's one of the two Zelda games I've never finished, the first being the original NES game. But I'll never finish that. It's my thing now. This game however, I will!

I played Majora's Mask the day my Grandfather (on the father side) died, and right now my grandfather (mothers side) is dying from cancer... So maybe this is a convenient time to pick up this game again?

@Aurion:

Agreed- for some reason I'm most fond of Majora's Mask and then Windwaker. I have the gold cartridge MM and the Zelda Collector's disc on Gamecube, but I would still buy it on VC.

Unfortunately I'm NTSC and just jealous of the PAL VC (and PSN store, for that matter). You guys are lucky with all the amazing recent releases.

I've been waiting for this to hit VC forever, can't wait for it to pop up in the US.

The only Zelda I've never played.

I have this on the Collector's Disc for the GameCube, but that version of Majora's Mask is terribly glitchy --- It freezes up, literally, randomly. And the save system in Majora's Mask makes dealing with the freezing up really difficult.

I swear I still have my original cartridge, too, but I have no idea where it is.

HOLY SHIT FUCK YES OH MY GOD I'M SO HAPPY JESUS CHRIST THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE GAMES I LOVE YOU NJSKYKORA! I DON'T LIVE IN EUROPE BUT THIS GIVES ME HOPE FUCK YESSSSSSSS!
Krow's Destructoid Blog
@Pedroray2003

The freezing problem is traced to having the rumble feature enabled while playing it. I did experience a little bit of slowdown in one area, the Clocktown square, but that's all.

I hope that helps.
garison's Destructoid Blog
I already have both the other versions so I don't think I'll spend the 1000 points.
Anus Mcphanus's Destructoid Blog
About fucking time
pedrovay2003's Destructoid Blog
@Bwark

Seroiusly? So if I take the rumble off, I should be good?

Holy crap, I may actually have to play it now.
