Well the adulation for the Wii was nice while it lasted, a US problem has yet again travelled over to our fair (yet rapidly expanding) island and guess which paper has picked the story up. Here's come choice quotes from the people interviewed for the article.

"I'm absolutely aghast that children are being told they are fat,"
Tam Fry (ironic name #1,452), National Obesity Forum

"She is solidly built but not fat."
The outraged father, where have we heard this excuse before?

Another thing worth pointing out is the comments on the article, clearly the gamers have struck pretty quickly on this one. The usual assortment of Mail idiots are present but some of the comments are pure comedy gold.

Has no one at Nintendo got a sense of humour? The game could have responded with something like..."One at a time, please" or "Please return this whale to the nearest ocean.

Most people however point out that its a GAME (some using the caps), some pointing to the inaccurate nature of the BMI measurement, some using the same 'solidly built' joke as me, some showing sympathy at how this EVIL GAME has destroyed a small (well, sort of) girl's delicate sensibilities. Yeah, its pretty much back to the old routine for the Mail.

Once again... I need to see a picture of said girl to see if the Wii Fit was indeed overtly harsh or not.

I know I'm getting the, "you are fat" response. I don't care, and kids shouldn't care about such things.

And hell, if a machine being honest about your weight is bad, who or what can be honest about it?

BMI is far from perfect but with children it simply should not be used.

"A child's BMI can change every month and it is perfectly possible for a child to be stocky, yet still very fit.

"I would be very concerned if children were using this game and I believe it should carry a warning for parents."

If you're using a goddamned video game to figure out your dietary habits, then you deserve to be called things a lot worse than "fat." It's a game, not a stay-at-home physiologist.

In Japan, they must not have "politically correct" movements and "hurt feelings sensitivity" rallies.

@Joseph i think the reason people are upset is because Nintendo is supposed to be synonymous w/ child friendly & parents were upset that the game didn't consider how inaccurate BMIs could be for pre-pubescent children.

They do have a point, it's hard to see form a male perspective; but weight is an obsession for girls & they are very impressionable at that age. So one could draw an argument for it contributing to a body dysmorphic disorder & the unhealthy actions it might trigger.

Also after BMI standarts most kids are fat. So it's not Nintendo's fault.

Yeah, I'd have to see a picture of the girl. No obesity experts would be railing against it had not one kid gotten a most likely inaccurate BMI measure.

Also, "obesity expert" would be the worst job ever. Seriously, an expert on fat?

Lots of people are considered fat by BMI because lots of people are fat. Eat less, ride that wiiboard more and join the cool kids.
