Jareth grimaced in the dim light of the forest as he sheathed his weapon temporarily. The cry that had echoed through the trees was that of the guild's Defender Fasnik as she was struck down by Contrangl. She was the third party member to be struck down. Now it was just him and Samtho, the Alchemist. Jareth wiped the sweat off his brow; the myriad of Allslash attacks he had unleashed seemed to do nothing but enrage the flotsam monster further. How had this happened? How had the guild happened upon such peril?
Only mere minutes before, the party had approached a door apprehensively. Marked upon the ancient door were signs of danger, to which Fasnik had scoffed. She pushed a few renegade strands of curly red hair away from her face. Her dark skin gleamed almost as brightly as her armor, as a few beams of light struggled their way through the tangle of branches and vines that choked the forest.
"We've been in this forest maze for months and faced all sorts of dangers. What could possibly be behind this door that is worse than some of the FOEs we have battled?" Miko, our Medic, looked uncomfortable. She had been progressing slower than the rest of the party and with some reluctance, and Jareth had almost wished they had left her in town. They had just finished cutting a few Redclaws out of the way and she was looking a bit worse for the wear.
"Maybe we should wait a bit.." she suggested meekly. Her voice trailed away as she saw the other guild members rolling their eyes at her. She looked towards Jareth with pleading eyes but he had turned away from her, towards the door. It was no secret that he had feelings for her, but giving in to her whims would only make him look weak in the eyes of the rest of the guild. Now he wished he had let his gut instinct and not his male sense of machismo lead the way.
Kupala's rage had been quite apparent after opening the door. So red hot was her anger that she had summoned the Lord of the Celestial Ocean to bar their way. Fasnik looked on with delight, she relished the idea of parting the monster fromf the precious Ice Spine she had heard so much about from the other adventurers in town. Jareth had felt his heart plummet sickenly into his stomach upon seeing the quivering Lord. Flanked by Samtho and Fasnik however, his mustered up his courage and felt brave enough to charge into battle, nursing the glimmer of hope that resided within him...
..the same feeling which was now extinguished as Samtho fell to the harsh Blizzard attacks that pummeled them both. The ice and snow cut deeply into them, winds battering through their armor and flesh. Samtho's skills in Fire were much too low to counter the icy storm, and Jareth shivered in his skin. It was not the cold that made him shake, but the sudden sensation of knowing that he was now alone facing the great Contrangl.
Jareth knew this would be the end, but he would at least go out with a fight. He began to take a deep breath and prepare for his Hell Cry, but alas! Contrangl saw this and moved lighting fast to deliver the fatal blow. For a large sea dwelling creature, he moved with unprecedented speed and fluidity; graceful and deadly.
Jareth's vision grew dimmer as his body went limp on the ground. The warm, wet feeling of his own blood seeped through his armor and felt almost comforting. As the sounds of wild creatures grew steadily softer, there was one last thought that blazed through his brain and brought a small smile of satisfaction to his face. His last breath was taken with this thought, his last point of bright hope upon the engulfing darkness....that thought was...
That Nintendoll would win a copy of the new game so it wouldn't really matter if he died anyway.

Well if this story doesn't make it, I can always go with my second loose interpretaion of "Tales of Etrian Odyssey." Which is of course, "Tails of Etrian Odyssey."

A bunch of people did short story form. Someone even did a "letter" form which was a good idea but the writing was horrifically bad.
@Tino, I dunno, like two days ago? check the contest section I guess.

I had also planned on writing a short story, except mine exploded into maybe 4 - 5 chapters of a novel. I doubt anybody's actually going to read all of mine. ^_^;;
