About Me
My name is Mog. I'm just this girl, you know?

Consoles owned: more than I can justify :(
Favorite ever system: Nintendo DS (Sega MegaDrive and SNES a close joint second)

I am totally awesome because:
* I am super good at retro games!
* I have a big spiritual gaming dick (XBOX360 gamerpoint score)
* I am hardcore into SRPGs!
* I collect vinyl figures

I am totally not awesome because:
* I am terrible at anything released in the last five years
* My XBOX 360 score includes 1000 points from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
* I love SNK and Capcom fighters but damn if I can beat anyone at ANYTHING
* I sold my old gaming systems for money rather than selling myself
* I would buy a box full of poop if it had Nippon Ichi's name on it
* I collect vinyl figures

Real Question:

MGS1, or Twin Snakes?

Inconsequential Backstory:

I am new to this blog thing! So I will start with a gaming confession: I have never actually finished a Metal Gear Solid game.

I watched the ending to Snake Eater on Youtube and I just fake the other stuff. I can't follow the full storyline, and MGS4 is looming :( :(

So, I am replaying through the MGS Essentials box set! Awesome right? But I am trying to decide: finish Metal Gear Solid 1 for PSX, or play Twin Snakes for GC?

A friend tells me that Twin Snakes is awesome because of Ryuhei Kitamura's cutscenes (the Versus feel). But I dunno, retro is appealing.

Decision must be made. My Snake figure is judging me from the shelf, because I bought him without truly understanding his inner self :(

Twin snakes is the more polished game but MGS1 does have the retro vibe, it is a bit harder I believe (I havent played both versions as I never had a gamecube).

If you really are into retro games and you don't mind the out-of-date graphics, I personally would say to go for the original PS1 version. There is just something special about that game! It's the one that started it all and you need to experience it in it's true original form to really appreciate what Metal Gear Solid is all about. You won't regret it trust me.

PSX. If you even touch the gamecube one I am going to headbutt you in the ovaries.

While I won't be headbutting you in the anything, I agree with Aborto.

Twin Snakes had a different director, and while Kojima was still supportive of it, it has a different vibe. the X-TREEM is turned to 11. While it's nice to play MGS1 with first person aiming and better graphics, the PSX version is just better in presentation.

Your friend is wrong, the cutscenes are what make Twin Snakes inferior.

OK guys, consensus is MGS1 PSX :-) Thank you for the advice!

I will report back on the experience! (and how much I suck at the game of course :-))

@Trev : Yup, my friend said something about Snake backflipping over missiles. Did not sound much like the MGS1 I remember!

@razerangel: oh man, if it is harder I am in some trouble. I did not do too well at the game first time round.

@SilverDragon1979: I am definitely into the retro games and do not mind the gfx :-) (especially with PS3 upscaling)

@aborto: I do not want to be headbutted anywhere - but is Twin Snake acceptable *after* playing the original trilogy?

I'm going to echo what Silver said; if you can live with the graphics and gameplay, go for the PS1 version. Twin Snakes just adds some gameplay mechanics from MGS2 and the voice work is different (PSX voices are still superior), but not enough to make it the 'definitive' version.

I'm not a fan of the re-done cutscenes in Twin Snakes, they're great as Ryuhei Kitamura cutscenes, but not so great as Metal Gear cutscenes.

So yeah. Go with the PS1 version.

i have both, play the PS1 version first. (for me it looked somewhat decent on my new Samsung LCD TV with S-video, compared to tube TV) WITH smoothing graphics via PS2.

Play both. Seriously. Its interesting to see 2 different takes on the MGS story. But you have to play the PSX version first

What's great is that there's actually a forum post about this.

All right, PSX version will be first! I guess that will help to better appreciate the changes in Twin Snakes. Older graphics are no problem at all.

@blehman: Cool! I will go look for it. I have not checked out the forums much yet :-)

Either is fine, Twin Snake is probably easier due to a more refined control scheme. The the beginning of the psycho mantis battle might be a little more fun on the gamecube version.
