About Me

Old-school gamer. I started gaming with the Atari 2600. I became an addict with the arcade release of Street Fighter II at my college. The SNES release pushed me into buying that system and a lame arcade stick. I haven't looked back since then. I still consider the 16-bit to be the Golden Age of gaming. The current generation is keeping me pretty happy, especially with the fighting game renaissance that's happening lately. And, yes, I'm old.

Proud owner of: Kiwi Gameboy Color, GBA SP, GBA Micro, PSP 3000, White DS Lite, Silver NeoGeo Pocket, purple SwanCrystal, SNES, Genesis, N64, purple Gamecube, slim PS2, Dreamcast, Wii and PS3.

Favorite Games: Last Blade 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Mark of the Wolves, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Zelda: Minish Cap, Dark Stalkers, King of Fighters, Mega Man ZX, Ikaruga, Macross: Do You Remember Love, Raiden Trad, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Valkyria Chronicles, Professor Layton, Killer7

Games on my mind:
Super Street Fighter II HD Remix (PS3)
King of Fighters XII (PS3)
King of Fighters XIII
King of Fighters 2k2: UM (PS2)
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift (PS3)

The length of games, or why I hate side quests
nilcam | 9:33 PM on 05.08.2008 10 comments

Games, as a whole, are too long. it seems that the length of a game is now a selling point just as the size of the game cartridge used to be. The problem is that most games should be a certain length but developers throw in a bunch of stupid side quests and pointless missions to pump up the time required to finish a game. The early Final fantasy games were about 40 hours of pure gameplay. There was no "go see him to get something to give to her to get something to bring to them to get a key to open a door to get to the next area" bullshit. Besides, 40 hours is a serious time commitment to a game; it's equivalent to a work week, for fuck's sake.

I prefer games that are 40 hours or shorter. Think about this: Chrono Trigger was about 25 hours. It's a brilliant game that offers an epic quest, but the experience is streamlined and that's the key. I loved Baten Kaitos until I reached the point that the story should have ended but the developer decided to add in enough filler content to warrant a second disc. Had the story ended at what was the natural ending point, I would still be singing the praises of BK; instead, I damn it and point to it as a perfect example of one of the main problems I see in the industry. What's next? A 90 hour platformer? No thanks. If a game is 30 hours or less, I'll probably play it more than once. If it's over 40, no dice. I have neither the time nor inclination to revisit, regardless of the quality.

now we get to the reason for this rant: Okami. I like the game, but its overabundance of convoluted side quests is making it hard to love. The art style is great and the first 14 hours are so were absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, I'm now at a point in the game where everything feels like a side quest and I'm starting to lose interest. While the early parts of the game were extremely compelling, these later parts are feeling like a collection of all the worst parts of 3D Zelda games - find this, dig over there, bring this to him, use the item he gives you to go over there where another ridiculous side quest awaits. This makes me respect the design decisions of Shadow of the Colossus even more.

There's a lot to be said about streamlined experiences and narrative that ends at a specific, natural point. So,please, let's focus more on quality and less on quantity.

Now that's definitely a matter of age. Just remember how often would you think that while on elementary or junior high, never right? As you gow old, time's scarce, so it's really hard to find 50 or 60 hours to play and it can be very annoying if the few hours you can play on a week are spent on some silly sidequest, you're absolutely right pal!

Personally I'll take a short (yes, even 10 hours or less!) and straightforward game over most gaming "epics" (i.e. long) any day.

I'll grant that my favorite series is probably the Legend of Zelda series and they have their fair share of side-questing, but I either found them relatively short and inconsequential (Ocarina, Twilight Princess) or they felt pretty substantial and meaningful (Majora's Mask).

Another reason to love shmups: the good ones are no more than 25-50 minutes of nothing but pure gameplay. I can always plow through a new path in Darius Gaiden and discover that what felt like 2 hours of intense gaming was actually 35 minutes.

Well I allways loved games that I can play for months in a row... I'm generally playing a few really long games in between my 'regular' gamingbouts...

but indeed some sidequests are just too obvious timefillers... like the almost hourlong quest in Lost Odyssey for the burial... that was just fucking ridiculous!

Actually, it's not all. I agree on the SotC point, too. No time-wasting sidequests. Just ride horse to location, climb colossus, kill colossus, repeat.

Also if you want story in a shmup, there's usually backstory in the manual if not on a whole bunch of fansites.

I am a shmup whore. In fact, I cannot wait for Shikigami no Shiro III next week. I love when shmups include stories in the gameplay. Ikaruga does this perfectly, as does Gunbird 2 and Bangai-O. Oooh... Bangai-O.

Eh, I personally put more importance on whether or not I can play a game for an hour or so every other day and actually feel that I've made progress in that short time. In the case of Okami, that requirement is met and then some.
