About Me

Old-school gamer. I started gaming with the Atari 2600. I became an addict with the arcade release of Street Fighter II at my college. The SNES release pushed me into buying that system and a lame arcade stick. I haven't looked back since then. I still consider the 16-bit to be the Golden Age of gaming. The current generation is keeping me pretty happy, especially with the fighting game renaissance that's happening lately. And, yes, I'm old.

Proud owner of: Kiwi Gameboy Color, GBA SP, GBA Micro, PSP 3000, White DS Lite, Silver NeoGeo Pocket, purple SwanCrystal, SNES, Genesis, N64, purple Gamecube, slim PS2, Dreamcast, Wii and PS3.

Street Fighter HD Remix survival guide

For such an old-school game, there sure do seem to be a lot of new players. At least, I hope many of the people I've played online are new and not just lame. If you're new to this classic series or just want to avoid being "that guy," here are some tips.

Sirlin's blog
David Sirlin is a pro SSFII Turbo player. He was also a designer on HD Remix. His blog has a detailed list of all the changes made to each character and some basic strategy tips. Check it out at http://www.sirlin.net/sf. His blog posts are well-written and very informative.

DO NOT SPAM MOVES
See how lame it is when I bold and uppercase a heading? Spamming is even worse and even less effective. I've often hated the "scrub" label thrown around at sites like Shoryuken.com. But last night after playing against 2 players who both played as Bison and just torpedoed back and forth, I became angry and found myself cursing at these scrubs. Spamming is not an effective strategy and makes you look like a complete dick, because you're being one. Don't do this. Ever.

Learn the basics
The beauty of Street Fighter is that special moves are unnecessary for success. In fact, whenever I find myself in a match with someone on my level or better, I avoid special moves. These moves are generally higher risk than normals and only slightly more effective. If you watch high level ST matches, you'll be shocked at how few specials are thrown around; supers are even less frequent. Shoryuken.com has some very nice wikis on Street Fighter strategy.

Find you character
Whenever I get into a new fighter, I like to find a character that fits my play style in order to learn the finer points of the game. I find charge characters are harder to master, so I avoid them until I'm pretty good in a game. I often start with a very balanced character and then move on to faster characters as my skills progress. I am best with 3 characters in the game but, because I understand the basics, can do well with most of the cast.

Practice and make no excuses
The story mode is the best way to practice. Sure, practice mode is okay but performing a shoryuken on another player is much different than doing it to a masochistic practice dummy. If need be, start on easy and work your way up to normal and eventually hard. Once you understand the basics and can perform under pressure, your enjoyment of this game will increase ten fold. A solid base of SF strategy will serve you well in most other fighters, so invest the time. It's worth it. Learn from each loss and gain greater insight into both your skill and your opponent's abilities.

Never disconnect during a fight
It's not fun having your ass beaten completely. Even so, never ever disconnect during a fight. That's a bitch move. Instead, leave the room gracefully and send a "good games" message. Don't be that guy.

Nice writeup man :)

I gotta say spamming is quite the point of contention in StreetFighter. Some people say that spamming is cheap while others (usually more hardcore "Play to Win" types) say that anything goes. I assume with a game as well balanced as this that Bison's torpedo would have a weakness or at least some way for your fighter to take it down.

With that said, I haven't come across a Torpedo-spamming Bison player online yet so my opinions might change once I do :)

Also the shoryuken.com wiki and forums are a great place for SF tactics and character strategies.

SRK is good for sources, but some of the members can be fickle bitches at times...

I disagree with the high level play not having specials thrown out. Boxer, O.Sagat (or Sagat in general)Guile and Ryu's main game invovles specials. though O.Sagat's banned in Japan, you look at high level O.Sagat games, it's Tiger shots all day for keepaway.

as for spammers...I really wouldn't worry about it. especially the Fireball spammers. they're left wide open on everything cept Jabs. It's balanced to the point spamming won't work at all. (unless something's been found)

O.Sagat is BANNED in JAPAN? Wow. That is fucking news.

Anyway, good writeup. ST is a game where it's all fun. Ask the people your playing with for help too. We won't kill for asking. :)

No characters are banned in Japan. They are "Soft Banned".

This means that no one ever uses these characters (O.Sagat and Akuma) because they have a general understanding that they are cheap. If you do use them and lose, you're never taken seriously as a player again.

And I dealt with a spammer tonight. Usually they;re one trick ponies and easy to pick apart. It IS very frustrating, but once you see their strategy they don't have a chance.

You forgot to list never jump when playing against Ryu or Ken. "Shoryuken!!!"

Spammers are no challenge. When Bison spams his torpedo, I block and throw. It's over in a few minutes. Those games really annoy me since they're boring. Play like you mean it. I used to love it when people spammed shoryukens. Block, counter and win. The problem is that I want real challenges.

@Teen Idol: It's fine to jump against shotos if you know the range of their shoryuken. A whiffed shoryuken is a pretty devastating mistake.

When Bison spams him torpedo, if your in the corner a block and throw is an easy counter. If your mid field, you can catch his feet in mid flight with a hit.

I didn't know that until I got into a game where people spent some time teaching each other tricks.

Really cool writeup. I suck at this game, but I want to get better. :D

Surprisingly enough, my character ended up being Cammy. Who woulda thunk it?

I don't play fighting games often, but if pressed, I pick random select until I find the least awkward one for me.
