I don't know why I even use the name anymore. Street Fighter has become a full-on obsession,so much so that I'm using my Speed Racer notebook to take notes on the game and each match up. I will share some of my findings in a bit.
First, I must announce that after falling below 1000 bp with Cammy, I have reached the 2000 mark again thanks to Fei Long. My play style with Fei has gotten more solid and my old style is merely a plan b, in case things get really desperate. I've mastered taking down Akuma players since they rely too much on the raging demon and I know exactly how to stop it.
In an effort to spread the knowledge I've accumulated in the aforementioned notebook, here's my analysis on the characters I face most often, along with notes on how Fei Long can deal with them. I thought I had Balrog figured out and then Senisan beat my face in, so I have some new theories regarding the boxer. Read further and hopefully learn or contribute to this knowledge base.
Fei Long
Fei Long is good at both offense and offensive defense, meaning a counter hit type game. He has a lot of good anti-air options. His neutral roundhouse and flaming dragon kick are probably the most reliable; the dragon kick wins for flash. His rekka kens in this game are really good for punishing sweep attempts and whiffed shoryukens. The rekka easily combos off of a crouching jab and is very effective. The chicken wing is probably Fei's best move. It kills raging demons dead, gets him in his opponents fast quickly, is effective against waking up characters and sets up a fairly easy throw. If the chicken wing is EX'd, it goes through fireballs to deliver some damage and get in close.
Akuma
There are only a few ways people use Akuma. Most try to keep me at a distance; a few get in and try to bring the pain. All Akuma players try to use raging demon. Once Fei Long gets past the air fireballs using dashes, rekkas and chicken wings, the dying of Akuma begins. I cannot remember the last time an Akuma player beat me. Most of them try to be too flashy and rely on the demon too much. Akuma has some serious combos but few players even try to use them. Fei can also beat Akuma's tatsu with a crouching fierce punch. Akuma is one of the few characters Fei can trade with.
Ken and Ryu
As a general rule, Ken players are far too reckless and sure of themselves. As stated, Fei can shut down their tatsu, limiting Ken's game. Kens often throw out shoryukens like they're going out of style. This is easily punished and makes most Kens an easy target. My goal with Fei Long is to punish every move Ken players try and effectively psyche them out. It's mostly easy.
Most Ryu players are analytical and careful. While Fei is just as good at shutting them down, these players have a much different and more deadly approach to the fight. Once they have meter, Fei is grounded since giving up a shoryuken also guarantees an Ultra or Super. Fei's greatest strength against Ryu players is his ability to quickly move back and forth across the screen, effectively controlling the pace of the match. Wise men fear Ryu.
Sagat
Sagat is the man in this game. Most players know that so they tend to overplay and this is their greatest weakness. I've countered tons of Tiger Knees with Fei's Ultra and then hitting Sagat as he wakes with an EX chicken wing. That usually ends the match and gets me some hate mail, which lets me know that I'm doing a good job.
Dhalsim
Dhalsim has a very hard time against Fei because Fei can hit stretchy limbs with his dragon kick and stay in Dhalsim's face. I usually don't have much trouble in this fight. I expect Dhalsim will become more formidable as people master him.
Chun Li
Chun is a lethal character in this game, but she's also very technical. This is her strength and weakness. It's easy to avoid her kikkoken so that's not too much of a factor. Her EX spinning bird kick is dangerous but Fei's jumping jab can shut that down. Whenever I play Chun Li, I try to get in quickly, get some hits and run away. By keeping her in pursuit, I can control the pacing of the match. Once again, I expect she'll be very high tier once people start mastering all the intricacies of this character.
Cammy
Cammy is fast and has priority like a mofo. Fortunately, very few people play her well. Most of her moves are rather safe, but the spiral arrow is not. Fei can stuff that with a standing medium punch or block and punish. Rekka sometimes beats out the spiral arrow but punishing is safer. She's the opposite of Fei Long in almost every way. His forward dash is faster but her back dash is faster. Her cannon spike is safe and his dragon kick is not. Her Ultra can be juggled into, his cannot. He does more dizzy damage, she does more life meter damage. It's no wonder I couldn't master her.
Balrog
I thought I had this match pegged and then Senisan showed me I didn't. But, because he's classy, he taught me a bit about this match up. Dragon kick stops punches better then the rekka. It was a simple lesson but an extremely important one. Then I figured out another great way to mess up Rog's punches, neutral jumping roundhouse. Balrog passes Fei up but the kick still connects. It's a tough match but a bit easier now.
Zangief
Zangief is a beast. His lariat beats all, except for Fei's crouching roundhouse. The lariat can beat Fei's crouching fierce punch surprisingly enough. My strategy here is simple; trip Zangief and get in a few hits, but nothing fancy, and then run like hell. If he moves toward me with a lariat, Fei's back jump roundhouse will hit and then combo into a sweep. Then it's time to run again.
I'm still having trouble with Bison and Blanka but very few people I've encountered play as those. Kirbilot is helping me with Bison and I'm on my own with Blanka. Fei's chicken wing can stuff the Blanka ball but the timing is crucial. It's a work in progress, as is all of this.
Kirbilot is also going to EVO. We're going to meet up at some point. Hopefully, Rab goes too. That would be awesome. I'm going to order a Dtoid shirt soon to wear during the competition to represent.
In other news
I took a bitof a break from SFIV to do some reading. I highly recommend Y the Last Man to all. It's brilliant and beautiful and touching and sad. It's a must read. It reminded me of some other comics I've read that really affected me: Deadenders by Ed Brubaker and Starman by James Robinson, Tony Harris, Wade von Grawbadger, et al. I started reading Deadenders when it came out since it was about a nihilistic scooter driver in a post-apocalyptic world. It was very me at the time. Jack Knight in Starman is me as a super hero.Everyone who knows me and read the book tells me that. His sarcastic sense of humor, his love of art deco and even his relationship with his father brought on by the early death of his mother all echo my own life. DC is re-releasing Starman in some really nice hardcovers for a great price. Y the Last Man is available in trade. Deadenders is hard to come by since it was canceled due to low sales. One trade was printed that collects the first stor arc. You may need to be resourceful to find Deadenders but it's so totally worth it.

I haven't really played this game since K2 came out. Part of the problem was that the PS3 controller was causing me a lot of pain to the point where I couldn't grip with my right hand. It made wiping my butt very difficult. I'll probably get back into it if I can get my hands on an arcade stick though.
I can tell that we are on two completely different skill levels. I shudder at the thought of playing against you.
Shit talking about Rab... Im like 400 in the leaderboards on LIVE for ranked wins and he put in my place today... his Balrog beats all my favs.
I wish we could play, I haven't been able to see a good Fei yet.
I don't like how Ken players spam the same moves over and over. That's something that even beginner fighting game players should know not to do.
hmm...well Chun's kinda up already. Though I don't see her getting any higher than she was in the cades.
if you really want more info on matchups, hit up the Fei long section in SRK. That's about all I can say with Blanka. Bison, be weary of standing MK/FK. Bison's main pokes..and they're good. Expect a lot of scissor kicks/Head press/glowing hand over psycho crushers since well...psycho crusher sucks in this game.
Gief matchups IMO are fun. Specially with Boxer. If Gief spams lariat, just back up and sweep from the furthest distance. Glowing hand? Jump back if you get hit or he whiffs. Seeing non EX green hand can link into a SPD right after, don't even play the poke game there. You'll lose everytime. Matter of fact, if you start poking more than 2 times with gief, expect a SPD. I do it too much with Boxer and I eat special throws for it. With Gief, I love it because it's a good match to teach players to play keepaway/turtle/poke/footsies. Because for people like Boxer and Fei, we need to be up close. Just about anything they wiff or gief blocks leads to a SPD. so it trains you to make Gief make the stupid move and punish it.
a GOOD Dhalsim player will annoy you with their keepaway. the fact his teleport has awesome recovery in this game is a problem for people like Fei and boxer. Then that crazy Ultra/Teleport/Super setup hurts if connects. This IMO is a bit more tough for our characters because Sim will just run around the stage and keep you out while you try to get inside. This is more punish/poke game than anything for fei/boxer.
GOOD Akuma players will play the most nasty zoning game with air fireballs. Then mix it up with standing FK (which is too good seeing he recovers before you do after the kicks.) or demon flip tactics. Get too close and pressure him and he'll just teleport away and rinse/repeat zoning game. Problem with casual players is that they just randomly throw out Raging demon or think it'll connect if they're close and that first jab hits. (which it doesnt. a simple jumpback kills that.) I can't provide much on this matchup for Fei seeing he doesn't have decent get arounds for MOST fireball answers. Especially air fireballs. Even for Boxer it's an annoyance if they know what they're doing.
whoops...went on talking about my character and yours. Though it applies.
good run down.
at some point, I will never learn to play SF this well. So kudos.
Cool im glad your enjoying it, have been playing alot of RE5 and now blazblue and kofxii great year for fighters.
I meant and now blazblue and kofxii are coming out this summer, 3 in the morning apologies.
@Shin Oni: Good points. as usual. I've played a few good Dhalsim players and the teleport stuff is pretty crazy but that's where neutral roundhouses come in handy. The game automatically points you in the direction of the opponent and Fei has some serious reach on that kick. Most Sim players I've played tried to surround you with the teleport rather than run away. I can shut that game out.
I've only played one or two good Akumas, unfortunately. I've gotten good at getting through air fireball traps. Fei's rekka moves really fast and goes under most if performed right before or as the fireball is thrown. The rekka and chicken wing also screws up the teleport move. If I CW in the direction they teleport, I'll hit them as the teleport animation ends. Rekka gets me in their face and usually forces them to do something stupid or teleport again. It's not a bad match up for Fei.
I do read the Fei Long thread at SRK but Blanka is still my nemesis. I need lots of practice at punishing Blanka balls.
Well, it looks like you're well past the point where I can give any sort of meaningful advice. You seem to have your shit together with all of the main matchups.
I play mostly with Akuma, and I usually have a hell of a time against Blanka and Bison. Cammy, too. I actually get excited to see Ken these days, because I can basically predict how the entire match will play out unless the guy is awesome.
It kinda sucks that some characters aren't even worth mentioning because so few people use them. I don't think I've seen one person use Gen in a ranked match since I got the game.
too bad there Char. i've hit at least 4 Gens on ranked. They seemed to be trying to learn him cause it wasn't anything special. I'm actually surprised there's not as many Abels. As I've seen a small increase of the guy.
as for Blanka, Wouldn't FP version of the punch reach after a block? I'm only guessing seeing that thing has some range. Though this has made me want to try out Fei Long a bit more.
@Shin Oni: The fierce rekka almost hits. To punish a blocked Blanka ball, you have to dash and then rekka. I haven't mastered that yet but that's what training and versus modes are for.
Props, man. Anyone who can play Fei Long effectively is obviously a beast.
As for Akuma though, I'm surprised that you didn't mention his Hyakkishu. As an Akuma player myself, I found it to be very useful for punishing clumsy shotos. And strangely, a lot of the Sagats I've fought tend to fall for it too.
@Char
I've fought literally one Gen, and he fucking destroyed me. The guy obviously knew his stuff and it was a damn fun match too.
"As a general rule, Ken players are far too reckless and sure of themselves."

I still wish I could make Abel and Gouken better than they are, but they're just too hard to actually win with.
Gen looks to be about the one guy I like to play that has some potential.
Sure I could play as higher tier people, but wheres the fun in playing as people that statistically have a higher winning percentage?
@Bullettrain: Gouken has lots of potential. In fact, he's banned from tournament play in Japan. His charged fireball is devastating and his back throw into Ultra is beastly. His counter move is a free focus attack, with all of the advantages and none of the disadvantages. Master Gouken and he can be unstoppable.
Good stuff! The notebook thing is a great idea. Hopefully since I messed with my router next time we try and play it won't drop our games. I put my arcade stick away just now to stop myself from playing since I have a ton of work to do this week for school. Hopefully next week will be better, but I graduate in 4 weeks anyway so then I am home free. If you want to face some more Bison later, I am always game. Good luck with the training.
I love Ken players, they are sooo dragon-punch happy... even after the 5th time i use the block-throw combo.
