About Me

Old-school gamer. I started gaming with the Atari 2600. I became an addict with the arcade release of Street Fighter II at my college. The SNES release pushed me into buying that system and a lame arcade stick. I haven't looked back since then. I still consider the 16-bit to be the Golden Age of gaming. The current generation is keeping me pretty happy, especially with the fighting game renaissance that's happening lately. And, yes, I'm old.

Proud owner of: Kiwi Gameboy Color, GBA SP, GBA Micro, PSP 3000, White DS Lite, Silver NeoGeo Pocket, purple SwanCrystal, SNES, Genesis, N64, purple Gamecube, slim PS2, Dreamcast, Wii and PS3.

On the accessibility of fighting games

For years I've heard people complain about how hard it is to get into traditional fighters. Street Fighter is often mentioned; in fact, SF HD Remix will have less complex controls and the SFIV director has talked at length about simplifying the control scheme.

After playing DBZ: BT3 for a few more hours, I must say that it baffles me that no one complains about the complexity of controls in this title. In Street Fighter, the player is using 6 self-explanatory buttons and a joystick. In DBZ: BT3, the player uses 2 analog sticks and 7 buttons. Furthermore, victory in Street Fighter can be attained using only basic attacks. In DBZ, the player has to learn much more to be effective. I also feel that Smash Bros. has the same complexity of control as DBZ yet no one ever addresses that.

Is it just me? Am I so ingrained in 2D fighting and the complex-as-you-want-it approach that these "casual" fighters require hours of practice to adjust?

I've never heard people say SF is too complicated. It requires fast reflexes sure. But it's pretty intuitive.

Virtua Fighter 5, now that's a game thats complicated. You can spend a year practicing & still not even master half of what's in it.

I've heard people complain about Tekken before. Usually the same people who pick Hwoarang and mash all the buttons because they can't handle special attacks.

you're not alone. I love my traditional fighters, but seriously, I can't touch the Budokai Tenkaichi series. So much shit to worry about (L2 = Up, Triangle = Ki, R2 = down junk.) I'm Too busy remembering the damn buttons that my friend's pretty much killed me. So I just don't bother. In the end, they're more mashing than actual skill. Plus the "who has the better capsules."

I think the whole dial-a-combo system is pretty ridiculous myself. When there are so many buttons on a controller, is ther really a need to have so many different combinations for this stuff?

People may argue that Smash Bros. oversimplified the controls, but I think that Nintendo had the right idea. Lets get rid of the combinations so we can start focusing on actual strategy and reflexes.

Yeah, the Budokai Tenkaichi controls are pretty overly complicated, although I've yet to check out the third installment. Also, Smash Bros. controls I'd have to argue are extremely simple-2 attack buttons, shield, jump. Despite this, the games do allow a decent amount of strategy.

Of all the traditional fighters, which one do you think is the least intimidating in terms of controls and moves?

@Excel: I would definitely say Street Fighter Alpha 2. Street Fighter's strength has always been the re-used control motions; characters either use charged moves or quarter circle/half circles. That's a broad generalization, but it happens to be rather accurate. Alpha 2 has good speed, air blocking, one-button throwing and easy-to-do custom combos for those that could not pull of super moves. Alpha 3 is too complex with all of the isms and I really hate the 2 button throw.
