About Me

Old-school gamer. I started gaming with the Atari 2600. I became an addict with the arcade release of Street Fighter II at my college. The SNES release pushed me into buying that system and a lame arcade stick. I haven't looked back since then. I still consider the 16-bit to be the Golden Age of gaming. The current generation is keeping me pretty happy, especially with the fighting game renaissance that's happening lately. And, yes, I'm old.

Proud owner of: Kiwi Gameboy Color, GBA SP, GBA Micro, PSP 3000, White DS Lite, Silver NeoGeo Pocket, purple SwanCrystal, SNES, Genesis, N64, purple Gamecube, slim PS2, Dreamcast, Wii and PS3.

Favorite Games: Last Blade 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Mark of the Wolves, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Zelda: Minish Cap, Dark Stalkers, King of Fighters, Mega Man ZX, Ikaruga, Macross: Do You Remember Love, Raiden Trad, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Valkyria Chronicles, Professor Layton, Killer7

Games on my mind:
Super Street Fighter II HD Remix (PS3)
King of Fighters XII (PS3)
King of Fighters XIII
King of Fighters 2k2: UM (PS2)
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift (PS3)

EVO 2k9 - Final thoughts
nilcam | 9:33 PM on 07.23.2009 13 comments

Evo 2k9 was an amazing experience. I was able to meet up with a few Dtoiders as well as some cool people who live near me and a few fighting game scene "celebrities." If you're interested in fighters, you owe it to yourself to go to Evo.

Booths and exhibits
There were three exhibitors at Evo: Aksys Games, Capcom and BandaiNamco. Aksys had a small booth that was all BlazBlue. It was a nice set up for such a young company. BandaiNamco had several Tekken stations and that was it. I'm not into Tekken, but this new one is a very pretty game. Capcom's booth had multiple stations for Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, MvC2 and the Fate fighter for PSP. It was a nice sized booth and I was able to check out both TvC and Fate.

There were a few guys who brought arcade cabinets, mostly SNK stuff. Matrimelee, Mark of the Wolves, Rumble Fish, Waku Waku 7, Battle Tryst and a few others. Unfortunately, that was the extent of SNK's presence - it's fans.George and Chris were very cool and knowledgeable about the history of SNK and arcades in general. I really enjoyed my conversations with them. They also brought a 4 player X-Men machine set to free play. My wife, myself and Kirbilot spent some time on that game. It's too good.

The crowd
I was greatly impressed by the overall attitude of the crowd. I've been to many conventions - anime, video game and comic book related - and this crowd was the most polite. I wasn't sure what sort of attitude to expect, but this level of courtesy was not expected. People were happy to move out of your way and to help my wife get through the crowd in her scooter. When matches were on the big screen, the excitement was palpable. The crowd didn't have a favorite instead cheering for any display of skill by the players. Good stuff.

The games
Even though I'm burned out on SFIV and feel that HD Remix is a better game, SFIV is damned exciting to watch. Seeing Sanford's Cammy in action was inspirational. BlazBlue at high level play is amazing. I love that it's a bit slower than Guilty Gear and also a bit more strategic. Arc Systems created a damn fine system with this one.

Disappointments
There are very few disappointments with Evo. I'm not a fan of Las Vegas, especially when it's 106 degrees at night. We stayed in the hotel pretty much the whole time. The biggest disappointment was SNK's absence. I've been an SNK fan since Samurai Shodown initially came out. King of Fighters XII will be in stores tomorrow and Ignition couldn't even be bothered to show up to an event which is the largest gathering of fighting game fans in the U.S. When a newcomer to the genre easily upstages a veteran like SNK, you know there's a problem. As much as SNKP USA sucked, I think Ignition is worse. They seem to think that KoF needs no marketing and nothing is further from the truth. SNKP needs new representation.

Overall
I'm glad that Evo was streamed live but being there was much more intense than any video can capture. The energy in the air was palpable and the level of excitement was something that had to be experienced first-hand. RAB, Kapkomi and Kirbilot were all great fun to talk with. I hope to hang with you guys again.

Great summary of a fuckin amazing weekend. I'm still fucking exhausted and extremely bitter that the "normal" girls around here aren't nearly as fucking smokin' as all the girls at EVO.
Dude. I don't know what it was but FUCK there were so many luscious ladies. Yeah, I'm a scumbag but at least I have mental images to last me for WEEKS. You see that C viper cosplayer? FAP. And that photographer wearing the gloves? zomg. Either way this year was hype as fuck. I plan on doing my own write up hopefully within a couple days but FUCK IM LAZY.

Yeah that's sad to hear about SNK, I saw your thread over on the KOF forum. I'm still debating if I'm going to pick it up. (The art is gorgeous!)

The tournie was amazing to watch, and I'm terrible at fighting games. I'd love to get to go to Evo just to watch. I still can't understand why fighting games don't have a large presence for competitive games compared to FPS and all that.

Good to hear about the friendliness too. I'd never want fighting games to be like MLG.

I love how "good" in fighting games can mean many things. Some players, like Valle, are good at aggressive, relentless play. Others, like Ed Ma and Daigo, are great technical players with a very deep understanding of the engine. Some players, like Sanford, have excellent reaction time which gives them an edge. There are also players who excel in strategy and reading the opponent. Becoming a god player begins with identifying your strong points and working to improve on and overcome your weak points. This is the way of the fighter.

Nilcam's got it exactly. One of the biggest parts of getting "good" at fighters is learning what you yourself already do well, and applying it to the game's engine. The rest of it is just understanding your character and practicing everything until you're sick of it.

What if you have no strong points and have the reflexes of an overweight turtle? :\

In adition to what Nilcam and Gen Eric Gui said, I'd like to add a few things. First, watch videos of your character in high level play. Watch what they do and how they react, but don't imitate it, figure out why they did that and learn from it. Second, go over to Shoryuken.com and Dustloop.com and do some reading. Don't even bother registering, just read. Lots of good information on those two sites. Third, stfuajpg. Practice in training mode, practice against the cpu, practice online, practice practice practice. It's the best way to get better.

i was only watching the stream but the 3rd strike got totally overshadowed which is just a natural progression of an older game I guess. Old cats are moving on but still..:(

Rab, I was really hoping that you'd be able to use the word "fuck" or its many variations in every single sentence of that first comment. Good try, though.
