About Me

Old-school gamer. I started gaming with the Atari 2600. I became an addict with the arcade release of Street Fighter II at my college. The SNES release pushed me into buying that system and a lame arcade stick. I haven't looked back since then. I still consider the 16-bit to be the Golden Age of gaming. The current generation is keeping me pretty happy, especially with the fighting game renaissance that's happening lately. And, yes, I'm old.

Proud owner of: Kiwi Gameboy Color, GBA SP, GBA Micro, PSP 3000, White DS Lite, Silver NeoGeo Pocket, purple SwanCrystal, SNES, Genesis, N64, purple Gamecube, slim PS2, Dreamcast, Wii and PS3.

Favorite Games: Last Blade 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Mark of the Wolves, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Zelda: Minish Cap, Dark Stalkers, King of Fighters, Mega Man ZX, Ikaruga, Macross: Do You Remember Love, Raiden Trad, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Valkyria Chronicles, Professor Layton, Killer7

Games on my mind:
Super Street Fighter II HD Remix (PS3)
King of Fighters XII (PS3)
King of Fighters XIII
King of Fighters 2k2: UM (PS2)
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift (PS3)

E3 - the aftermath
nilcam | 2:43 PM on 07.18.2008 10 comments

I went into E3 rather excited. I watched all of the (boring) big 3 conferences; I even watched Sony and Microsoft despite not owning their consoles. I expected to see some serious announcements this year. All of the consoles have been out for a few years so this should have been all about games. The problem is that it was not. Nintendo's conference was awful; I've never been so down after a Nintendo conference. In the past, for every casual game or toy, some great news followed, and I was cool with that. I waited for that moment and it never happened. MS, despite their success, has decided to chase after Nintendo. That's not a direction I expected from them. Sony packed a bit more into the presentation, but Tretton's delivery was horrible.

After the conferences, I waited with baited breath to add titles to the list of upcoming games I'm looking forward to. It's very disappointing when I am only adding a few games to it. Rhythm Heaven(Tengoku) and Retro Gaming Challenge are both rather exciting. At first, I was excited by the prospect of playing Taiko drums in WiiMusic but, upon further research, it seems that the game is a play-along and not a song creator. So, in the end, nothing is added to my Wii list. The DS list was already heavy, so 2 more items added is cool. The Wii is the problem. Between now and February, there are only 5 retail games I'm interested in. That's a problem.

After all of this, I've decided to buy another system. Street Fighter IV is looking better and better, especially after reading some location test articles at shoryuken.com. On top of that, BlazBlue and Battle Fantasia both look amazing. SNK announced last year that King of Fighters XII will be PS3 and 360, so I had to decide on which system to buy.

I historically have bought Nintendo hardware because I've not had any serious problems and my DS Lite hinge crack was fixed very quickly and with no hassle to me. I shy away from MS hardware since they are a software maker that cannot make decent software and their 360 hardware problems are legendary. I also do not like the idea of paying for Live. Most of my friends have a Wii and a PS3. I like that the PS3 is region free and has free online. The game library is somewhat small, currently, but most of the games I want will be released on that console, so I'm leaning in that direction. I have found a place where I can get a 40 GB with Virtua Fighter 5 and the Hori Fighting Stick for just over $400. Battle Fantasia is available for import now and the price is reasonable.

With the Wii on top, I had hoped that I could avoid another system. That was the case just a few weeks ago, but it seems that E3 changed everything.

Totally agree with the idea of not paying for Live. One of my main complaints about 360.
Also. Buying the PS3, DVDs will only work from the region that PS3 is from, some Blu-Rays are like that too, so be careful. Games however to my knowledge are fine, except DLC for them has to be bought from the same region too.

I had to make the same type of choice a couple of months ago, I choose the 360. Mainly because at the available library. Though it is cool that the 360 is getting alot of rpg's. But in the end the PS3 is just as good, and region free is badass.

About paying for Live, I dont really think its that big thing. As cheap as it is month I feel its not that much money.

As far as the SFIV
Im not trying to plug my blog

I couldnt find a link to the youtube, or gamevideo footage.

I had actually thought of importing Battle Fantasia but never got around to it. Just checked Play Asia though and they have it for 41 bucks Asia version and 44 bucks Japan version so I imported it. They have some 25% off in stock items till the 20th.

Battle Fantasia is getting released in English in September by Aksys games. But it's only going to be for 360.

360 is our choice for most of the games out. We have friends that haven't upgraded to this generation yet (as they still have Xbox 1 or Ps2)..

We may/will eventually get a PS3, but, since I already have a PS2 that we don't really play much, I think until blu-ray movies come down in price, it will be awhile before we invest in Ps3.

Live is very worth it imo. From the sound of it, the PS3 still has a while to go before the service runs as well as Live. Also, I wouldn't worry about hardware problems, it's pretty rare by now and MS fixes them for free anyways. The 360 is also region free for the most part, at least with the games that matter(Gundam:Operation Troy). Also, I might get VF5 and an arcade stick soon and I want some hardcore fighting game fans to play with. Did I mention only the 360 version is online?

I'm not pro MS or anti PS3, I'm just a Nintendo fan who wants some cool people to play VF5 with.

Also, after re-reading my own comment it sounds like I'm anti-PS a bit.. Well, truthfully, I'm an old Sega fan (I <3 Dreamcast).. and in fairness, Xbox was our big favorite last gen, and GC for games like Viewtiful Joe and Pikmin on the Gamecube a close second. But the main prob with PS2 was I never knew of the PS2 games since not owning one until a few years ago.

The only fighters I am any good at anymore are MvC2 (DC), Street Fighter2 (Any plat.), Soul Calibur 1,2,3 (Any plat), and a little bit of KoF NeoWave (Xbox1).

I like SNK fighters (I wish I was only better at them) and ok with tekken, doa, fatal fury, world heroes, and stuff as far back as Virtua Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct.. but I've really needed to get back in and get the rust out of my killer combos so I'm not just a flailing button masher.

My mistake, I just found out that the 360 is mostly region locked. I am, however, praying that the Gundam game makes it to the U.S. and the chances of it being localized look pretty good.
