About Me

Old-school gamer. I started gaming with the Atari 2600. I became an addict with the arcade release of Street Fighter II at my college. The SNES release pushed me into buying that system and a lame arcade stick. I haven't looked back since then. I still consider the 16-bit to be the Golden Age of gaming. The current generation is keeping me pretty happy, especially with the fighting game renaissance that's happening lately. And, yes, I'm old.

Proud owner of: Kiwi Gameboy Color, GBA SP, GBA Micro, PSP 3000, White DS Lite, Silver NeoGeo Pocket, purple SwanCrystal, SNES, Genesis, N64, purple Gamecube, slim PS2, Dreamcast, Wii and PS3.

Favorite Games: Last Blade 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Mark of the Wolves, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Zelda: Minish Cap, Dark Stalkers, King of Fighters, Mega Man ZX, Ikaruga, Macross: Do You Remember Love, Raiden Trad, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Valkyria Chronicles, Professor Layton, Killer7

Blast Works impressions

I've been playing lots of shmups lately - Castle of Shikigami 3, Monkey King and, as of today, Blast Works.

Blast Works is a re-imagining of Kenta Cho's classic Tumiki Fighters. Tumiki is a shooter in which destroyed enemies became blocks that could be caught and became part of the player's ship. The game was imaginative and fun, if a bit easy. Budcat has taken the concept and run with it. The game is absolutely fantastic. The ship controls very smoothly and the hit box is appropriately small. Action gets rather hectic as the player's ship grows, taking up more screen space and gathering more firepower. Some enemy ships add extra guns and firepower to the player's ship when absorbed, which results in the player having some rather interesting bullet patterns. The absorbed ships also act as a shield until they're hit and fall off. At one point, my ship was the length of the screen. Luckily, the bulk of the ship does not affect the speed and control of the ship.

My wife and I played through the first 4 levels. We used the Wiimote, held NES style. We both had a great time and laughed quite frequently. Quote of the evening, from Emily: "I need some more helicopters and shit." That sums up the experience perfectly.

Beyond the main game, there is an editor that allows players to completely design new games. I'm excited to try my hand at designing a shmup. It's been a dream of mine ever since I took a videogame design class. The game doesn't stop there, though: four original Kenta Cho games are unlockable - Tumiki Fighters, rRootage, Gunroar and Torus Trooper. I cannot wait to play rRootage on my HDTV. Not a bad deal for $40.

If you have a Wii and like fun games and/or shmups, buy it.

Hot dang this is out now?

And why is it that everyone I know and their mothers took a video game design class and I wasn't aware?

This is out now? Sweet, I'll have to get it along with Boom Blox. I'd kill for Torus Trooper on my Wii.

Jonathan: All copies were a day late due to flooding in the midwest. I was frustrated until I picked up my copy. I hate pre-ordering a game and then not getting it on the street date.

Excel: Online is only used for leaderboards and the sharing of models. I took a game design class a few years ago since a local college was offering an associate's degree in game design and programming. I am a graphic designer and the job I had at the time was so awful that I needed a way to keep the creativity flowing.

Sounds neat, I might check it out. I've heard that the ship builder is really robust, and you can make almost anything. One of the early dev videos had him building a ship that looked like Mayor McCheese.

How is Monkey King? That looked like a lot of fun, but I can't find anyone who's actually played the damn thing.

It's fun but easy and short. The graphics and music are very charming; the hit box is pretty large for a shmup. The tilt mechanic is brilliant. Tilt the Wiimote to the left to slow down the action, tilt to the right to speed it up. My wife absolutely loves it so it was worth the $20 for the multiplayer part.
