About Me

Old-school gamer. I started gaming with the Atari 2600. I became an addict with the arcade release of Street Fighter II at my college. The SNES release pushed me into buying that system and a lame arcade stick. I haven't looked back since then. I still consider the 16-bit to be the Golden Age of gaming. The current generation is keeping me pretty happy, especially with the fighting game renaissance that's happening lately. And, yes, I'm old.

Proud owner of: Kiwi Gameboy Color, GBA SP, GBA Micro, PSP 3000, White DS Lite, Silver NeoGeo Pocket, purple SwanCrystal, SNES, Genesis, N64, purple Gamecube, slim PS2, Dreamcast, Wii and PS3.

A good movie game?

I love me some Speed Racer. I grew up on it and it was the first anime that I was a fan of, despite not knowing it was anime at the time. That said, I have little-to-no desire to see the movie. Anyway, after reading some reviews of the DS game which stated that it was the love child of F-Zero and Burnout, I decided to give it a go. It is as described. The graphics are beautiful, the races are fast and furious and the anime feel is there. The "car-fu" is very cool and the tracks are basically roller coaster rides. The cars control rather well and the jumps and stunts are breath taking.

The game has a few basic modes: WRL (Grand Prix), Arcade and multi-card multi-player. Of course, Grand Prix is the main mode. Each GP is 3 races and the player is awarded points based on the ranking in each race. Executing stunts and beating down other racers gains fans which, in turn, unlocks new racers, cars, paint jobs and challenges. Arcade is the same as WRL except it's a single, drop-in race; this mode is perfect for handhelds.

Great job, Virtuos. This is a great racer and easily the best on the DS. It's also the best movie game I've ever played.

Tonight, my wife and I finally watched Brokeback Mountain. It was heart-wrenchingly sad and rivals 5 cm/s as the saddest movie I've ever seen. Ang Lee is a master film maker.

You've obviously never played The Warriors then. :)

I'll second The Warriors. I'd also suggest The Bourne Conspiracy given my Pre-Review of the demo, but technically it's not a movie tie-in.

The Warriors is great, but that's not exactly the same as a current movie having a game put on schedule to sell with the movie. It is fucking incredible though. Riddick is a separate entity from any of the movies as well.

I don't think I could play anything related to the movie though, the obscene futuristic cg colourfest just offends my senses too much.

Chronicles of Riddick, and Van Helsing are the only two good movie games I've played. Van Helsing is a competent Devil May Cry clone, it works well. Follows the plot and scenery of the movie, too, with some extras (obviously).

I've not played any of those movie games. The Warriors didn't look that interesting to me; Van Helsing was sooo incredibly bad that I didn't even consider the game; and I don't play FPS games or own an Xbox, so Riddick was never considered.

The only genre I feel the DS is lacking in is over-the-top, cartoony racing. Mario Kart DS was good, but this is better.

Brokeback game? Considering nothing happens in the movie, I'll pass.

I have played the first Spider-Man game on Gamecube and it was fun. I just find most movie games to be complete garbage. Speed Racer DS completely shattered my expectations. I thought the Wii version would be good but expected the DS version to be lacking.
