About Me

Old-school gamer. I started gaming with the Atari 2600. I became an addict with the arcade release of Street Fighter II at my college. The SNES release pushed me into buying that system and a lame arcade stick. I haven't looked back since then. I still consider the 16-bit to be the Golden Age of gaming. The current generation is keeping me pretty happy, especially with the fighting game renaissance that's happening lately. And, yes, I'm old.

Proud owner of: Kiwi Gameboy Color, GBA SP, GBA Micro, PSP 3000, White DS Lite, Silver NeoGeo Pocket, purple SwanCrystal, SNES, Genesis, N64, purple Gamecube, slim PS2, Dreamcast, Wii and PS3.

Favorite Games: Last Blade 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Mark of the Wolves, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Zelda: Minish Cap, Dark Stalkers, King of Fighters, Mega Man ZX, Ikaruga, Macross: Do You Remember Love, Raiden Trad, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Valkyria Chronicles, Professor Layton, Killer7

Games on my mind:
Super Street Fighter II HD Remix (PS3)
King of Fighters XII (PS3)
King of Fighters XIII
King of Fighters 2k2: UM (PS2)
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift (PS3)

"For the old-school gamers"

I went to Izumicon this weekend. It was the first year for this anime con in Oklahoma City and, Overall, it was a decent first year show. The dealers room was smaller than I expected, but made up for quantity with quality. I scored a rare blue version of Captain Harlock's Arcadia. It will look rather nice on display next to my Space Battleship Yamato.

On to the real topic here. There was a video game room and one of our friends wanted to check it out. They were running tournaments and such and since he and I are both avid 2D fighting game players, we were hoping to get in some Guilty Gear, KoF or Street Fighter play. Upon entering the room, the guy at the front desk told us he would need to hold our photo IDs. I asked what games were in the room before giving up my ID. He said they had several FPS and 360 games as well as Halo 2, and I quote, "for the old-school gamers." I could not hide the sour face and eye roll at the mention of Halo 2 as an old-school game. Sorry, but the only old-school games on any MS platform are on anthologies or are KoF or Metal Slug games. We all walked away from the game room mocking the guy. Maybe next year.

Most conventions have tournaments that will bring people in, that is why you get Halo tournaments and such. It brings in people. Frat boys and not...

You should look into MAGFest.

Hunh. I didn't know games before 2004 (or were they talking Halo 2 for Vista - 2007 release date) were considered old-school.

That does suck though. Sorry dude.

Yeah it was the same at Nan Deus Kan in Denver. We did have an old multi-game snk arcade cabinet in the corner, but that was monopolised by buy a group of 3-4 guys for a majority of the day.

What about The Simpsons arcade game, or NBA Jam? Or remember the original Spy Hunter? Those games are old-school. That was a sad story, nilcam...hopefully some people out there still remember those old games fondly, like I do...

That sucks. But it is all about the cash money sadly. Most Americans especially in the midwest (I'm from Kentucky), care nothing for Guilty Gear's and the KOF.

Boy they love teh Haloz though.

But it was an ANIME convention. Guilty Gear is as close to playing anime as you can currently get.
