Okami more successful on Wii than PS2
nikoiskhsn | 11:25 AM on 04.25.2009 15 comments

Since its initial launch on the PS2 in 2006, Okami has earned high acclaim from critics and reviews. Despite that and the IGN 2006 Game of the Year Award, it has suffered from poor sales totaling only 150,000 on the PS2.

Developed by Clover Studios, the same studio responsible for Viewtiful Joe and God Hand, Okami was innovative in both its gameplay and artstyle featuring watercolor and wool carving features. Clover Studios was closed shorted after that same year.

Since, Okami has been redeveloped and reproduced by Ready at Dawn and Capcom for the Nintendo Wii in 2008 and has earned similar praise with the updated motion control schemes. Sales have approached a quarter million at 220,000 so far already surpassing the total sales of Okami on the PS2.

A 50% increase in sales for an unsuccessful 2 year old port is impressive. Success of enhanced ports speaks volumes of the appeal the Wii has when developers apply and leverage the systems stengths correctly.

Other ports such as Dead Rising also from Capcom shows what watering down a franchise can lead to in sales and critical backlash.

What upcoming ports concern you?
All of them. I'm concerned that they'll be rushed for a quick buck. Okami is really the only port that I agree with fitting on the Wii, because it feels like it was made for it.

Agreed with Magnalon. Okami was a port that genuinely fit the Wii and was meant for that system. Other ports both in the past and upcoming scare me because they are basically attempts to get quick cheap bucks through the the Wii install base. Specifically the huge portion of the install base that hasnt developed a taste for games yet.

Source for the sales figures?

New ports? Mmmm...

Maybe to shaggy, but Persona games on Wii would be interesting.

What else... If Capcom makes a game on the Wii, it better be first made originally on the Wii, Dead Rising was a total mess.

I dunno but I want Doshin the Giant to get ported in order it has a wider audience.

Aaaaand maybe Marvel VS Capcom on VC/WiiWare but I am not sure if its too much to ask.

I couldn't stand the combat on the Wii version, to the point where I HAD to return it.

Too bad they stopped printing the disks for the PS2 version very early, then started printing them again after the game got a ton of rewards. I had to call 5 game stores before I found one with a new copy. (When I bought it long before the Wii port) From what I've read, the Wii version's controls are actually less intuitive than the PS2 version. Something about pressing a specific button before executing an ink move, making the player take extra steps to do simple shapes.

I want to see Psychonauts, with the option to use both Wii and Gamecube controls. Also not in shitty 50hz mode.

Personally, I think Okami on the Wii isn't anywhere NEAR as good as the PS2 version. The combat is broken, you have to paint in specific directions, and THEY FORGOT TO PUT IN THE ENDING CREDITS.

Also, I don't know if it was just my TV or something, but the Wii version was extremely blurry.

A staggering 70,000 copies?

STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES.

Capcom is one of the biggest companies around, even if you combine the sales its still a flop.

And for once I agree with Pedro, the game was not meant for the Wii at all, people where just obsessed with that because of LOL BUT TEH WAGGLE and it had the same problem every other motion centric Wii game had, imprecise motion controls, game worked much better on the PS2.

I don't know how you can consider 150,000 sales unsuccessful. Lukewarm perhaps, but still...
Shin Oni's Destructoid Blog
sold more than the PS2? I blame the watermark fiasco behind that number.

I dunno what the "Okami was great on the Wii" people are saying. Everyone I talked to said the port was horrible.

Besides. I like the "Clover addition" in the PS2...like it should be in the Wii version. It ALSO lacked that completely silly but fun loading screen minigame.

The Wii version really pissed me off and I quit playing. Maybe if I ever find an original version I'll pick it up.
Mirax's Destructoid Blog
Weird, I quite liked the Wii port of Okami. The celestial brush worked perfectly, at least in my opinion, although the Fleetfoot technique and the combat were kinda hard to control.
The lack of end credits and the loading minigame were terrible, tough.

Could I have some sauce with this please? What regions does this cover?

Because according to this article: http://www.edge-online.com/features/the-games-people-buy-2007?page=0,5, Okami for the PS2 sold 200,000 copies in North America during 2006. Presumably the total North American sales figure has risen since then and there are the sales from other regions to include. So something doesn't add up here.

Also, shame on anyone who didn't buy Okami when it first came out.
