Let me just waist your time with something many have stopped doing. READING.
Now I know this might come to an so so whored shock to most of you(or maybe it doesn’t) that most people do not read the post fully before posting.
If you want to see an example here is a fresh one as of 5 hours ago.
Hamza has posted about a Dtoid contest, and here is the rules for doing so.
“In order to win one of these items, leave a comment below linking us (use BBCode, not HTML!) to a product from Glitch Gaming Apparel that you really like. I'll be picking eight random winners to give the prizes to once the contest closes at 11:59 PM CST tonight. One entry per person and contest is open worldwide.”
Now the first thing that should sand out is what to do.
Leave a comment below, linking to a product from Glitch Gaming Apparel that you like.
Alright so there is step one. But this is where people stop reading, because more then enough people did not fallow step all the way, that being;
Use BBCode, not HTML!
Now I know this does not seem like much but I have counted on the first page of comments 10 people out of 50 who did not take the time to fallow this one step or to read it.
First of all copypasta is a bad habit many use, but an even worse one is not reading direction all the way or what some one has posted. Yes you read that right “copypasta” is a term used for copying something that is from original content and reposting it with out thought.
Now this is happening more and more on topics not just her but also all over the internet and it needs to stop. I know I have done this before my self and am not clean of this sin, but when I make a mistake I down right say I do.
I.E. A little while back I thought Jim Sterling posted a story about the IGN.com pre release review of Modern Warfare 2 and the back lash on the review for the PC when in fact I was the one that was mistaken, as the photo shop had the same score that the game really got, and I was looking at the database score not the PC score for the game. Like and idiot I posted a dumb comment. Later sending my apology via the tips email for being a dumb ass.
And with that I say we can work together to stop this now, by reading the post and its full content first before acting or posting.
The other thing I would like to point out is that the post that Hamza posted for this was 6 sentences long. Only 6. Now why is that important?
1st sentence: The intro
2nd sentence: The who ”I like this band”
3rd sentence: The what
4th sentence: The how
5th sentence: The amount
6th sentence: And the last part, when
I know that some people might be in a rush, but it does not take long to go over 6 sentence, and it truly gives the feeling like people are posting with out thinking going “ZOMG PRIZE MUST POST FAST TO WINZZZ”. But if this group of people would have taken the time they would see the next important factor in all this.
Picking eight random winners to give the prizes to once the contest closes at 11:59 PM CST tonight
Now yes I do know that this was time sensitive from the post. About 2 hours to read it and post a comment. Now I can see something like this happening if some one saw this 5 minutes before the dead line but not on the 1st page of comments. And also the fact is it was random as well, but I don’t think the people this message or idea would have read that far with the mistakes that I have already seen.
Hell I was hoping to see what people picked, and after seeing this on the first page of comments, I posted my own commenting on the people not reading and posting a link the correct way, full knowing I would not be in that prize running as I have been out all night watching the Laker game with girls who’s breast resemble that of fully formed watermelons, and I did not see this post till I got home.
Bottom line, don’t rush read or half read a topic. Remember Dtoid does not have fans, it has followers. And followers of Dtoid should know better then to, not give respect to anyone else posts, and fully read an article or any post before commenting on it, even if your post is going to slam said poster, praise them, or enter a contest you need to follow the direction for.
Well that’s all for my rant. I know my writing is not the best, and if you read my post to the end and are reading this, feel free to slam me on anything I say here.
God, I really must be tired if I though that was funny. I need sleep.
Does it take much effort to find out what BBCode is? No. But they assume it's a contest so whatever. How difficult can it be? Maybe, they think, BBCode is a fancy word for URL. You get where I'm going with this? There ignorance, and then there's assuming. I think people just assume something so simple would be just copy and paste. I probably would too if I hadn't been around the interweb block.
...what they really need is the ability to edit your comment... or at least the ability to edit it when you see it in the second window before it goes "live".
I also have an old habit of writing responses in quicknote and then copy/pasting them to the actual blog... and this comes from writing a long response, only to "lose it" when hitting the post button on other websites. I'm actually trying to break that habit as I have occasionally posted the wrong comment to the wrong post (having so many windows open in Firefox)... but again, an ability to edit comments would resolve this issue too.
People did not even try to post in the correct way, they just posted the link. I did not count the people that posted and tried to use the BBcode and then retried. In reality there where about 30 people on that posted on the first 50 comments, but some had trouble and ended up double posting to fix which is fine. but out of the 30, 10 or 11 people did not even try or read what they should have done. That is 1 in 3, you got to admit that looks worse and proves my point even more so.
