I couldn't agree more, I wish big companies such as Square Enix would do this too but you know what they're like....
The one thing I loved about PC gaming was the ability to use mods. With the PS3, they allowed the use of mods with the game UT3 and I really don't understand why this concept didn't catch on!
Granted, we PS3 owners were dependent on PC modders cooking their PC mods over to the PS3, but there were plenty of mods and mutators available on various websites that we PS3 owners could freely download and use. To my knowledge, UT3 has been the only game to use this so far... but I would love to see more devs allow for this console functionality. The PS3 does have a browser and the modding system worked beautifully (especially after they streamlined the mod/mutator use with the last UT3 update).
UT3 also let us use keyboard and mouse with the PS3 version... another thing that devs seem to be overlooking with more recent games...
