The Sims 4: The Chiview

So I noticed Destructoid has not yet published a review for The Sims 4. A lot of sites have but honestly I think for a game of this size and scale, asking for a one or two day review is a bit much anyway, as playing this type of game can takes hours upon hours of someones life. I am here, however, to tell you never fear community. For I will step up to the plate for this one, and tell you that if Destructoid were reviewing this game under the same terms they've reviewed games in the past, The Sims 4 would get a big fat zero.

Now you might think "That opinion is drenched in bias and you clearly hate the game". I don't! I actually like quite a few of the things they added. I think the character creation stuff is neat, and the facial manipulation and details are more then enough to keep me from going back to The Sims 3 (seriously, I tried going back and couldn't do it. Maybe I just suck at making faces but they all looked like the same person with a different hair style). I like the idea of there being no land line phones (becuase seriously everyone uses cell phones now-a-days anyway). I like most of the things they added to the game.

So what, then, is so bad that this game would deserve a zero? Well putting aside the mass of things taken out of the base game, I wouldn't nesserily say they would cause it to desearve a zero. Possibly a low score, and most certaintly taken into account when reviewing the game. After all it's pretty hard for me ignore the fact that there are no pools and no buisness career option. The new "whacky" careers kind of stop making sense when you make a sim a criminal but can't make one a cop, it kind of threw my whole "make Seryuu Ubiquitous" in the sims, give her the evil trait, and make her a police officer plan into disaray.

No, what makes this game get a big fat zero are the sheer number of game breaking, and game affecting bugs I've encountered. If I were a real reviewer, and this was a review copy of the game a company sent me, I would be doing a diservice to all of my readers if I didn't warn them just how unplayable this game this game can become. I, in fact, have only been able to put a few hours into The Sims 4, not becuase of my desire not to play the game, but becuase of the impossibility of actually, uh, playing it.

My sims go to work, my sims come home. One of the things that has changed in The Sims 4 from previous games is that you can't check your sims needs when they are at work. This complicates things a lot when your sim returns from work, and their status doesn't change from "at work" to "at home". It means that, effectivly, when you can control your sim and tell them to do things, you can only guess which needs are about to get low. Your one saving grace is that thing they need the most at the time will have an icon where you would normally be able to check all of their needs. So if a need gets in the yellow or orange, you can take care of it then, but there's no way to keep them 100% happy, 100% of the time, becuase you can't see their needs to check.

The second, and much more dire, and relativly unfixable and unwinnable situation I've encountered. The one that forced me to stop playing game the right this Chiview, the one that I now have to wait for a patch or do an absurdly long winded and complicated fix to even think about countinuing playing the game, is a bug where I took the bills out of my sims mailbox, tried to pay them, and then the command literally won't go through.

Yes you heard right, sims bills need to be paid, but the game won't let me. What does this mean in the long run? My sims are without power and water, becuase of a glitch in the game I can't fix, and it's not my job to fix. That my friends, is what would cause me to give this game, a big, FAT, zero. The idea of a releasing a game with a bug that destroys your ability to countinue playing is not an acceptable bug. Yes there is a work around, becuase I searched long and hard for a fix. One of the developers listed a possible way to fix it on twitter. It's a long and complicated string of actions to allow you to countinue playing.

Unfortuantly it's not my job to make the game playable again on my own. Not as a customer, and not as a reviewer. Becuase that nails the coffin shut when a player can no longer countinue playing your game without long and unnesseray fixes to problems that shouldn't exist.

All that having been said, I do look forward to them actually fixing things. I would like to get back to playing it.

Of Game Sites, Ad Blocks, And Revenue.

Hello everyone, I very much doubt the current batch of Dtoid users remember me at all but I used to frequent the Media Molecule (Tomopop, Japanator, and Destructoid) quite frequently. As a matter of fact Destructoid used to be my main source of gaming news and the people writing it my favorite bunch of people to get my news from. Some of those writers still remain here to such as the lovely Hamza and Jim among a group of people I either don't know or think I don't know (due to them using their real names to write for the site as opposed to the name I used to know them by).

The place I now frequent for anything gaming related is Giant Bomb, stopping by Destructoid every so often and RoosterTeeth due to them not being game critics. If I am being quite honest, any other gaming site (not publication, not news outlet, not anything specific, yet all of those things) quite frankly disgusts me. Neogaf and Kotakabsoluteshit being the major offenders in horrible sites that I feel shouldn't exist.

But what sites I hate isn't nearly as important to me as the sites I love, or used to love.

Destructoid is a site I used to love and would love to love again. It's a site that has people that I may love and I don't even know it yet. But therein lies the problem.

Long ago I made a big switch from reading the internet to watching it. I feel like a lot of other people did too. I could be wrong and maybe I'm even in the minority on this. I can't say for sure. But a lot of the internet now is video, and I would love to watch Destructoid as a video site (not that news program thing they did and maybe still do, that was kind of... well I didn't like it all that much if I'm being honest).

But my point is, there is not easy to way to watch video on Destructoid. You have a tab that does lead to a rather messy culmination of all the video content, but nothings promoted, it's not telling me what I should be watching, it's not trying to get me interested in any of the video content, so I wouldn't even know where to begin, and the shows I already know I like, such as Jimquisition, isn't even mainly on Destructoid, it's on the escapist. I don't want to give any money to the fucking escapist to watch Jimquisition in high quality, if it asked me to give that money to Destructoid I would, but not the fucking Escapist.

So there is my answer. As a very long time reader of Destructoid, who (just for full clarification) does use Ad-block. I would throw money at all of your lovely faces if video was made the prominent point of the site, if features like the Giant Bomb quick looks were implemented and I could watch, for example, Hamza talk to Jim while he explains a game, if all of that stuff was promoted well and Destructoid didn't make it's video content lead to other, worse sites (Like fucking Machinma and the eScapist).

I love Destructoid. I never want to see it go away. At the same rate, I want to see it evolve with the internet. I want to see it move away from text and towards video. I want to see proper promotion of that stuff.

And for full full clarifiacation. I know that redesigning the site in that way is asking a lot. But I wasn't asked to be reasonable, I was asked to tell you what would make me want to give you money. So there it is :)   read

Shrine Impulse Episode 12: Dick Girls?!

The newest episode of Shrine Impulse is here! The show has gone threw a few changes since we last posted. We decided to make the show a seasonal thing, and as such, they editing is much more lax and the show is longer the previous episodes. In this episode we talk about this seasons anime, some Touhou stuff, and of course the video games we've been playing like always. The music as the top of the show is Postmeride and the at the bottom Sis Pulla Magica, both from the OST of the anime "Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magicka"

Our podbean account was locked for some reason (probably because we don't post that often), so you'll have to download it threw medifire. I'm sorry for this bit of inconvenience, but hopefully you'll enjoy anyway :)   read

Shrine Impulse Revival Records Friday

Does anyone remember (or used to listen to) Shrine Impulse? If not the quick rundown is it's a Video Game and Anime podcast I used to post up here on Destructoid and Japanator. I'm bringing it back this Friday and am looking for questions to get us started. The questions don't necessarily have to be Video Game or Anime related and can be sent to [email protected]

You can post them here but sending them to the E-mail is a better option, since it's easier to have everything compiled into one place.   read
