During our ongoing discussions under the latest post about Microsoft hating on Home, dtoid user Squawk brought up a good point about people hating on the PS3: “I can't really say anything about HOME because I don't have any experience with it. But....wow, Sony just seems to be tripping this generation at every turn. Even if its not the case, the PERCEPTION is that it is the case, and that's what counts.” I think that Squawk is on to something about this whole perception thing. As a person who has owned all the current gen system, I can clearly state my preferences, and there is nothing wrong with that, but I've never found myself getting all that engaged in these console fights. I used to back in the day, but I've since learned it's all pretty pointless. The only time I feel the need is when someone is being blatantly retarded, and even then I don't always get involved. Still, that hasn't stopped me from wondering why so many people are fighting tooth and nail and shitting on each other's purchases. Why does THIS console war seem so much more vicious than the previous? And why hasn't it died down yet? I'm not really sure I can answer all those questions, but I think I have an idea on a few. We'll start with why people have the perception that the PS3 isn't a good gaming device - and it has a lot to do with perception and timing... and fanboys.
You see, Sony was late to the game, Microsoft got the jump and most people bought them up. Then Sony comes along with their system. Now people have a choice. They can save up and buy a another system, the PS3, or they can be happy with what they have and ignore Sony all together. Me, I bought another system, that's just how I am. I saved up the money and I got a PS3. I wanted a blu-ray player anyway, so it wasn't that big of a deal to me. But for those who just have one system, or even a combination of the wii and one of the others, they aren't just happy with what they have, they have to convince themselves that not only do they not want to buy the PS3, but that it is shit and therefore they SHOULDN'T buy it. Of course this is nonsense, the PS3 is an excellent system, and I think most people would agree(those who actually own one). But some of those folks who just have a 360 or a Wii, they don't want to feel like they are missing out, so they tell themselves that the PS3 is shit and then they actually start believing it. That is easier for them than facing the fact that they might miss some exclusive games like MGS4 or functions like Home. Just like Squawk said, perception. And a fanboy is born – or at least, one kind of fanboy, as there seems to be several breeds out there.
Of course, this isn't enough for them. They need reassurance. So not only do they tell themselves that it sucks but they go on websites and they try to find other people to back up their ideas. Misery loves company, so does blind hate. Now you have lots of people roving about, shitting on the PS3. They say it has no games (it does). They say the online sucks (works fine). They need more and more reassurance as they hear more positive things about the system they have told themselves they hate, so their claims get meaner and more insane as time goes on. And this gives birth to the other side of the battlegrounds... It starts with those people who JUST have a PS3. They go on their favorite games website and start reading this shit and it makes them mad. “What? But I love my PS3!!” They get defensive. They wonder if they made the wrong purchase, their brains go into alarm mode and their minds won't let them think that maybe they are missing out on something, so they have to believe that the xbox 360 is shit (it's not). But telling themselves that isn't enough, they have to go online and find other people who hate the xbox and exaggerate the hardware failure and hate on the online community attached to Live and the mii-like avatars. All of which is just more bullshit. Now you have a full blown battle fought by two sides who started the whole thing by convincing themselves that something they don't even own is utter shit because they don't want to buy it. Companies get a whiff of the whole mess and realize that nothing equals money like exploiting a two-sided hate-war so the websites jump in to fan the flames with bait-posts and the news sites get involved with bias and some people who own all three systems and shouldn't care but just like to start fights jump in and then you have people who just blindly love a company and will fall for all their propaganda and-
Well, you get the idea. And all this could have been avoided had people just faced the fact that every system has unique qualities that make it worth owning, but unless you are willing to make the monetary sacrifice to own all three, you simply can't complain. Owning any one system and concentrating on its library is a different experience than having to pick and choose games for all three, so there is a positive to that route as well. But no matter what you have, be happy with it because some people have nothing.

Except for the Wii. Wocka Wocka Wocka.
Our roommate (who's getting the boot in a month) hates everything that she doens't own and trash talkes about it as well. My friend bought an Rx-8, she says there shit and wouldn't take one for free if it was given to her.
There are tons of people who do this with video games and video game systems. I own the PS3 and Wii and I do want a 360 but as of right now my Wii gets very little play time as it's just not my cup of tea.
I actually dont really pay attenttion to 360posts too much as they dont really aply to me and why shit talk something you dont own or have only briefly own? You would hold no credibilty at all!!
I just like playing videogames :)
It amazes me just how crazy some of these people are. They will defend their console of choice so vigorusly and don't realize that the company that made it doesn't give two shits about them personally. They are delusional, they think that behaving this way they are doing a service to the company. The same company that doesn't care about them. Seems strange doesn't it? Defending their console company and not getting shit out of it, no money, nothing. It does not and will not change anything by acting this way.
Secondly, while PS3 has many of the same great games 360 has, that doesn't help when more people already own a 360. 360 got the lead from the get go by releasing first, and this is IMO this biggest problem for Sony. Why would a high school kid who only has enough cash for one console buy a PS3 when all his friends have a 360? All my friends followed me and bought a 360, and while I could afford to spend 600 bucks (at the time) on a PS3, they couldn't and still really can't justify it, even at it's now reduced price.
And to be honest, besides MGS4 and Uncharted, I pretty much never touch my PS3, unless it's to watch movies. That's pretty much it. Played LBP for 2 days, boring as shit after a while.
i'm a fanboy but if i had the money and knew the machine wouldn't break i would have a 360. i love video games and my ps3 quadruples as gba, snes, nes and gb player thanks to linux. the 360 and the wii are probably to only systems i've never owned. one day though....one day.
But we should be able to share our favorite without being accused of fanboyism as well. I don't hate any system. I just happen to use my Wii the least and my PS3 the most. I don't say that because of propaganda or because I want to change YOUR mind. I say it because it's true. I think, along with working on these people who lie to themselves about hating systems, we should also work on how we all react to people sharing their opinion. It should be OK to have a favorite system.
&
What i did before making the 360 splash is searching what games i like on systems that are multi-platform - then made another search on console exclusives that i liked
...and yes $$$ was also a goddamn factor, stfu.

I have a PS2, Wii(which i also play GC on it),(brand spanking new) Xbox360, and a DSlite
This may not be the point Squawk intended, but the statement is what lead me to the ideas which lead to me writing it, so it seemed only fair to give props.
Nothing wrong with making a choice. You made the decision that was right for you. That's cool. The point is that people can choose one without HATING on the other. There's no reason for it. The point is that they are both awesome systems and they both have viable reasons for a person to choose one or the other. It just comes down to your own perception of which looks better for you.
Seriously, people, SERIOUSLY?!!
If that's how you feel, then congratulations, you've made a decision. Take comfort in feeling you've made a good purchase. But also realize that there are people with the opposite opinion who would match those exclusives. It depends on what kind of game you enjoy. But I'm not saying your opinion is wrong, I'm just reminding you that it is an opinion.
You make a good point. I guess I left that part out because I feel that, like the positives, all the systems had mis-steps in the beginning. But I would agree that Sony's mistakes got the most coverage, at least as far as I saw. But MS has had their fair share of coverage on their hardware, and nintendo has been hit for their lack of harddrive and game drought. But I think all of us who are on this site are probably passed those early mistakes. But it is amazing I ever bought one what with all the early slamming it got! lol
But, I will say the Ps3 looks like it's built to last like a fucking tank, while everyone knows the shoddy 360 story. The red rings are not as big a deal due to the new warranty, but that doesn't change the fact the system is built like shit and a major inconvenience when it messes up. PS3 is a great games machine, just not one that I need personally. Don't have enough time to play all my games on the 360. Oh, and I never touch my Wii. I wish I had bought a Ps3 a million times over instead of that Wii.
To this day I love my ps3, but i also long for some 360 exclusive AS I KNOW I would have longed for some ps3 exclusives had I gone for the 360 (Valkyria chronicles, drool). I think this hype could really die down, is some day there some sort of cross-platform multiplayer, heres to hoping.
What I'm getting though is, STFUJPG, love thy neighbor.
Right now, that list is at 10-11 titles. It's going to go up in 2009.
Yeah. Outside of my criticism of the lack of games, I really like the wii. And if nintendo would get some more games out for it, I'd play it. But other than that, I still dig the virtual console and I still play animal crossing, elebits, mariokart and nights. I wish people would learn to criticize instead of flat out bash - but I used to do the same thing. I'm just trying to take the hate out of how I approach gaming, at least for myself.
