For those unfamiliar with the infamous Dunk Contest, it’s probably one of the greatest examples of how a sporting event can carefully balance a great deal of both skill and trash-talking opponents. The event typically brings together a myriad of NBA stars as well as basketball legends from the past who are both their to compete and judge the competition. What matters most to the judges when determining the number of points to judge a dunk is how much skill, effort, and creativity went into pulling off the dunk.

If you don’t know, an NBA dunk is pretty much impossible to pull off for any average person who’s not a professional basketball player. The official heigh of an NBA basketball hoop is 10 feet from the floor to the rim, which means any given basketball player would need a great deal of vertical lift to even touch the rim, let alone dunk a basketball into its basket.

With that said, NBA players from past to present have come up with a dozen of different types of dunks that are both dazzling to witness and require a ridiculous level of coordination to accomplish. This year’s competitors in the dunk contest consist of last year’s defending champion Jeremy Evans, 2007 champion Gerald Green, Kenneth Faried, Eric Bledsoe, James White, and Terrence Ross.
