About Me

My name is Naia (pronounced either Nay-a or Neye-a, like yay or like eye) I am I'm a starving artist in LA trying to keep my sanity. I do mostly freelance stuff and I'm always looking for people (even on DToid) to do fun projects with in entertainment. That can be either in theater, film, TV, or video games. I want to be like Kermit the Frog and be part of a group that entertains. I also love blue slimes, puppies and Sprinkles Cupcakes.

I've been playing computer and video games all my life. My dad's a programmer so we got an IBM PC very early on in the 80's. For Christmas in 1989 my parents surprised me with a Nintendo and it's been downhill ever since. I have/had an NES, gameboy (of all flavors) SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega Gamegear, Sega Saturn, PS1, PS2, PS3, Gamecube, DS, PSP, Wii, and 360. Whew!

I am a HUGE Dragon Quest Fan Girl. I did NOT buy an R4 to play Dragon Quest 4 in broken beta-english. I also do NOT play ROMs because I did NOT want to play Dragon Quest V and VI ten years ago in english, not knowing if I would ever see those games in the US. ROMS are bad :P Squenix can shit in a bag and if the bag has a cute slime on it, I'll buy it. I know it's a problem.

Also, Rydia is my hero.

I like games with colors in them aside from brown and black, even if most of the world calls those games "kiddy." Screw that! I play RPGs, Action/Adventure, Platformers, Puzzles, and Point-n-Click Adventure games. I will play fighters and shooters, but they have to be the right kind of game.

I'm such a nerd, I like to keep track of all the games I've completed in an excel file (it's around 300 something). Now that my backlog is out of control I have a word document for that too. My goal is to for once and for all eliminate the backlog, or at least keep it to a number in the single digits.

I have a lot of things to say about the game industry, it's something I care deeply about and love giving my opinions. I like to rant about shit. I'm here just to share what I have to say, in hopes someone is willing to listen. If I'm not here, I'm most likely wasting my life on IRC.

Also for the record, my Top 5 Games of All Time
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy 4
3. Super Mario 3
4. Dragon Quest 3
5. Phantasy Star 4

Yes, I love my retro games

Where Can Mario Go From Here?
naia-the-gamer | 12:56 PM on 11.12.2007 16 comments

It's release day of Super Mario Galaxy, I'm almost completely better from being sick (which turned out to be acute tonsillitis), and I'm now just waiting to meet up with my fiancee who pre-ordered the game to pick it up and celebrate Veteran's day with my favorite plumber.

I've played a bit of Galaxy at my local EBGamestop and it was by far the most fun I have had playing a video game in years. I had forgotten how much I love Mario games! The levels truly are ingenious and live up to everything all the reviewers say. However, now that Mario has gone into space it makes me wonder what Nintendo is going to do next. Does the next Mario game have to be groundbreaking? Mario Sunshine was more like Mario 64 (but with better controls from my point of view) and many people have turned it into the whipping boy of the Mario series. Could the next Mario game suffer the same fate?

I think the next Mario game doesn't have to be particularly groundbreaking to be fun. If anything I think it would be fun to go back, explore previous elements and add new finish to them, a la New Super Mario Brothers. I enjoyed the game immensely but felt it was a bit simplified. A 3D Mario game set in the Mushroom Kingdom would be fun, and the physics we see in Galaxy could add a whole new level to old-school exploration.

I know this may sound like I'm moving backwards instead of forwards, but I think at this point, I wonder if excessive innovation is the answer for the next Mario game. Innovation, for innovations sake doesn't do anybody any good. I'm very glad the suits are back in Galaxy. I've made my point before as to how much I love the powerups in Mario games. It would be even more fun to me if they brought the suits back in a 3D space in the Mushroom Kingdom. I also missed the ability to store power-ups as was done in Super Mario 3. It was great to start a stage with a P-wing, or star. I'm surprised this hasn't been explored further. It would have made things much more convenient in New Super Mario Brothers when I was running around looking for a mini-mushroom just to clear certain stages to open up secret passages.

I'm starting to think I just want a 3D remake of Mario 3, but at the same time I feel there are so many things Nintendo explored and quickly abandoned from previous Mario games (ie item storage) and feel that they could be explored more. Mario games seem to be coming out only once every five or six years now, so I don't think Nintendo has to worry about overusing any concepts.

Finally, what happened to the Koopa Kids? They have appeared in three games and since Bowser Jr came along have been grossly ignored. I was excited to see the in Mario and Luigi SSS, but where have they been? Did Bowser ground them? Wouldn't it been fun to see what they could do in a 3D space? It would make boss fights interesting.

These are a few ideas floating around in my head as I anticipate this latest Mario game. What are your hopes for future Mario games? Now that he's conquered the Galaxy what lies for him next?

Jeez, I don't even have my copy of Galaxy yet. However, you make a good point. What's left for the plumber? For that matter, what's left for platforming? I hate to say this, but maybe they should finally retire Mario platformers.

...

No, I take it back! Long live Mario!

The Koopa Kids... Oh man. I remember them from the old Super Mario World cartoon that used to be on. King Koopa was a busy man, though. Check the list;

Iggy
Morton
Reznor
Lemmy
Roy
Wendy O.
Larry

I was thinking about this a few days ago myself. Mario really has gone everywhere. I think I'm so excited about Galaxy that I haven't given the next step possible thought. Time traveling themes do seem like they would be the next logical advancement after a game set in space, but who knows?

@ Savant: You fail. Its Ludwig Von, not Reznor. I believe those were the triceratops mini-bosses.

As for now, I'm fairly content with the direction of the 3D Mario games. The only ill-will I have to the current Mario phase is the 2D games. NSMB was far too easy and short and Yoshi's Island DS was utter crap. I wish they would go back to their roots for the 2D franchise, possibly even make the true successor to SMW. I have a couple ideas but that might be better left for a c-blog post. Oh, and check my rant for the the koopa kids

How about a sequel to Luigi's Mansion, except that it would be longer than tech-demo length? I loved that game, and it was a lot fresher than the usual Mario stuff.

Or even better, something completely different. Has Toad had his own game? Luigi, Peach, Wario, and Yoshi have all had their time in the spotlight (Mansion, Super Princess Peach DS, WarioLand and Wario Ware series, Yoshi's Story), why not give Toad a starring role?

The next Mario will take place in a failed underwater art deco utopia.

It'll be like Mario, except to play you'll have to draw the characters on a sheet of white paper using markers which will be sold in the game proper... I know, we'll call it "Paper Mario"! Get it? Yeah.

I think Mario should take the "Captain N" route and explore a ton of other Nintendo franchise worlds. That would be fun. CO-OP would like player two use who ever is the main character of that particular world.
