Before I continue on with this blog post, let me say this: I'm a Dragon Quest Superfan. I try to keep it in check, but sometimes it gets the better of me. I am fully aware that all Squenix needs to do is take a dump in a bag, call it Dragon Quest and I will buy it. However Dragon Quest has been pretty much ignored by American audiences, so I'm also used to being shafted over and over again. I don't get offended if people don't understand my love for those cute slimes and archaic gameplay. So what I'm about to say may be tainted by the drinking of fanboy kool-aid.
There I said, it. I'm feeling better.
When it was announced that Square and Enix were merging, I have to admit I was concerned. Not realizing that Enix bought Square I was worried that Enix games would be buried in the Final Fantasy frenzy, and that my chances of seeing future Dragon Quest games in the US would decrease even more. Square-Enix USA pledged to give Dragon Quest more of a presence in the US, but the cynical fan in me was only going to believe it when I saw it. It was hard to believe them when Enix planned to bring the Playstation remake of Dragon Warrior IV to US only to have it cancelled at the last minute. Since then, I don't believe in localization announcements until the game is on the shelves and I can see it with my own eyes.
I know this sounds like I'm griping, but you have to understand where I'm coming from; I'm a superfan to an under-appreciated franchise outside of Japan, and I've been a DQ superfan since the early 90's.
Now they've brought a few titles over to the US and they are trying to give Dragon Quest more of a
presence in western territories, but nonetheless, I've seen something that many journalists and gamers have done. Maybe it's out of laziness and innocent:
People still refer to Square-Enix as "Square."
I know this is nitpicking, but it has the implication that the "Enix" part of Square-Enix isn't as important. With the company trying to find partners in the US and increase their sales in Western territories, it seems disconcerting that so many members of the gaming community forget about half of the company. Sure it may be out of laziness, and that's what I thought at first. I adopted the term "Squenix" when I was feeling lazy. However it's still part of the hardcore gamer vernacular. It makes me wonder if people even know what games Enix has made over the years.
All of this was prompted by the announcement of Squenix wanting to expand their market in western territories and I can't help but to think that if they gave some of their unlocalized games a chance, they may actually do alright in the US. While there has been an improvement of a DQ presence in the US, still many of the titles never reach US shores. They could fix this by releasing the DS remakes of DQ IV, V, and VI that they are working on. We still haven't seen V or VI officially in the US and they're decent titles. The DS style games they have been making for the casual market could do well in the US too, given the high popularity of games like Brain Age and Nintendogs. They don't really need to do much to make games to cater to the west (aside from maybe a solid shooter that isn't a spinoff or an existing franchise). There's so much they could do already to get the western territories talking.
And maybe with all of this, they could get people to remember the Enix side of the company.
I hadn't really played a DQ game since the first one, and was pleasantly surprised by VIII. Now that I know IV, V, and VI are being re-made for the DS, I'm waiting for a chance to grind out some levels on 'em.
Oh, and I've used squeenix as the pronunciation since the merger. It's just FF is the more popular series in teh America's.
Your eloqouent defense of Enix landed you in the friends column. L.A. folks have to stick together. You should seriously hang out with the crowd during E for All. I still remember fondly my Nintendo Power bonus of Dragon Warrior.
I've never understood why the two companies became SqareEnix when Enix did the buying. I have loved the DQ games since playing the first three on Gameboy Color. I am drooling for the DS remakes of 4-6 and will be starting VIII as soon as I finish Phantom Hourglass. I only recently bought a PS2, which is why that game has not been played yet.
I understand how you feel about DQ. Unfortunately, most western audiences want the visual splash and that's why FF is so big outside of Japan. In Japan, it's DQ all the way.
To be honest the only DQ I've played is VIII, i always looked for 7 on the PS1 but never could find one (still looking though), however i got interested in DQ games since i found one of my favorites animes was based on it, like 10 years ago.
Anyway, I'm not a Square fan at all, i enjoy some Final Fantasys, but usually end up playing RPGs published by Atlus.
Also, I <3 Star Ocean 2.
Man, ActRiser, The Soul Blazer Trilogy, Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile... I never was a huge DQ fan, But damn if I don't LOVE DQIII and DQIV.
Enix has made and published a handful of my favorite games over the years. I just with the Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre teams didn't get sucked into the FFTA stuff... FFT and FFXII are masterpieces... But FFTA is just... Well yeah...
Anyway. I get what your saying, I just wish we'd see new games in these series... I'm praying for a new ActRiser. One that will clense the abomination of the second one from my mind.
As a fan of both Square and Enix... I was happy when the merger happened. I just hope to see more stuff from the Enix side of it coming soon. One can hope at least.
I agree wholeheartedly, Naia. Thats why I always call them Squeenix. All the DQ remakes and the new one are really high on my list of games to snag, DQVIII was a huge timesink for me and I love the old ones on NES
@Tristero
Who exactly is the LA crowd? I know there's a lot of people from around here, but I don't know who they all are. And what days are you guys hanging out for E4A?
It's even worse when people think that Square was the one that bought Enix. That makes me want to hurt them. HURTMORE levels. srsly.
@Tristero,
I wish I could go to E4A, and I could have gotten free tickets! However, my best friend from back where I grew up is getting married that weekend, and I'm in the wedding. I wouldn't miss her wedding for the world.
Buuut, if there are other social activities that come up in the LA area, I would love to be posted :D
@aerox and naia: We'll most definitely be letting everyone know how to meet up. Just keep an eye on the site and cblogs around mid-October. Some Destructoid writers who don't live here will also be traveling to L.A.
You aren't alone, I was worried by them merging too. FF is so popular that everything else gets drowned out. And so much focus on that one series disappoints me even more, when I know what great and varied games both made back in the day.
Its unfortunate that we might not see any of Enix's previous games past just DQ games, When we'd love to see more Actraiser, Ogre Battle and even the Torneko's Advebture series. I pray they all rest FF series for a while, because so much focus on it has ruined IMO, other series like Mana.
Hopefully when they are done flogging FF on DS and PSP, they'll give us what we really want to see.
@nilcam
Because it's standard practice for the larger company in mergers to take the final name. Personally I preferred SquareSoft, but SquareEnix isn't terrible... either way they are still my favorite publisher; only rivaled by Atlus. To be honest I never played many Enix games, but Star Ocean 2 is near the very top of my all time games list and the 2 DQ games that I played were enjoyable.
