About Me

My name is Naia (pronounced either Nay-a or Neye-a, like yay or like eye) I am I'm a starving artist in LA trying to keep my sanity. I do mostly freelance stuff and I'm always looking for people (even on DToid) to do fun projects with in entertainment. That can be either in theater, film, TV, or video games. I want to be like Kermit the Frog and be part of a group that entertains. I also love blue slimes, puppies and Sprinkles Cupcakes.

I've been playing computer and video games all my life. My dad's a programmer so we got an IBM PC very early on in the 80's. For Christmas in 1989 my parents surprised me with a Nintendo and it's been downhill ever since. I have/had an NES, gameboy (of all flavors) SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega Gamegear, Sega Saturn, PS1, PS2, PS3, Gamecube, DS, PSP, Wii, and 360. Whew!

I am a HUGE Dragon Quest Fan Girl. I did NOT buy an R4 to play Dragon Quest 4 in broken beta-english. I also do NOT play ROMs because I did NOT want to play Dragon Quest V and VI ten years ago in english, not knowing if I would ever see those games in the US. ROMS are bad :P Squenix can shit in a bag and if the bag has a cute slime on it, I'll buy it. I know it's a problem.

Also, Rydia is my hero.

I like games with colors in them aside from brown and black, even if most of the world calls those games "kiddy." Screw that! I play RPGs, Action/Adventure, Platformers, Puzzles, and Point-n-Click Adventure games. I will play fighters and shooters, but they have to be the right kind of game.

I'm such a nerd, I like to keep track of all the games I've completed in an excel file (it's around 300 something). Now that my backlog is out of control I have a word document for that too. My goal is to for once and for all eliminate the backlog, or at least keep it to a number in the single digits.

I have a lot of things to say about the game industry, it's something I care deeply about and love giving my opinions. I like to rant about shit. I'm here just to share what I have to say, in hopes someone is willing to listen. If I'm not here, I'm most likely wasting my life on IRC.

Also for the record, my Top 5 Games of All Time
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy 4
3. Super Mario 3
4. Dragon Quest 3
5. Phantasy Star 4

Yes, I love my retro games

This is me thinking out load instead of sleeping. But I have wondered what others have
thought about the following topic...

I've spent the last eight years griping about my gaming backlog. I always have about a
dozen games on my shelf that I own, desperately want to play and yet I continue to buy
new ones, thus adding to my backlog. It's worse during Christmas and my birthday
because I usually get at least a few more games all at once. It always seems reading
comments from other gamers on the internet that so many of them seem to have time to
play the latest and greatest so immediately after they come out. I know not all gamers on
the internet are of the unemployed-living-in-their-parent's-basement species. How do they
have the time?

I live on my own (well with my fiance, but away from the 'rents) I have a couple of jobs
(don't ask. It's the starving artist life. I do a shit load of things that add up to a normal
work week). Life gets in the way and I go for (gasp) days without playing video games.
It occurred to me that the "problem" may be with me; I always like to complete the games
I start.

I don't have to be one of those crazy people that get 100% on everything (although I do
that sometimes). However I like to finish what I start. I've been working on Metroid Prime
3 for months because I have to finish the game. Personal things have prevented me from
finishing it sooner (First Mario Galaxy came out and I dropped everything. Then I went
home for Christmas, then I moved). It's important to me so I feel like I get the most out of
that gaming experience. Coupled with the fact that I play a lot of RPG's I spend forever on
games.

But I wonder how important it is for the average gamer (or even hardcore gamer) to finish
a game. Do you get bored with the game and move on to something else? Do you ever go
back to the game? Do you remember what you were supposed to do? How does that
effect things? Is it better for gamers to try a lot of different games, or play fewer and focus
on beating the few you have? Or be crazy like me and realize that you may die before
finishing all the games in your collection?

What about you other DToid readers: Do you find yourself in an endless backlog? How
important is it for you to complete your games?

I am guilty of this as well... but often times its because I grow bored with the game that I am currently playing.

I guess I'm blessed I ususally have to wait for a price drop before I can plop the bucks down for new games but I usually always get big hits right when they come out (like smash next month) so usually during the summer lull i get to catch up with the previous falss biggest hits like i will do with mass effect and devil may cry this summer

I've actually made an effort recently to go to my backlog and finish some. I have to admit, there are a lot of games in there... I'm a little ashamed, tbh. It is fairly important to me to finish things though. Its a little harder because I'm somewhat of a completionist, but not hardcore.

When I play a game, I want it DONE. I'll plow through it if I have to.

The only time I don't finish a game is if it's not that appealing to me. I drift in and out of Earthbound, and I'll probably never finish FFX. But I usually set aside a certain time for gaming, and if a game's good, that usually takes up my time.

@Phoenix Gamma
You aren't enthralled by Earthbound? We are now mortal enemies -.- (Well not really, but you get the idea :D)

Naia: I am 100% with you on this. I gotta finish what I start, and because of that I have a backlog of games that seems to get larger every day. I'm also a student with a job so sometimes my video game time gets cut into pretty severely and I can't play much of anything for days, or even weeks, at a time.

Sometime it's hard for me to delve back into an RPG after being away for a while (what the hell was I doing again?) but I generally have the patience to figure it out.

I have a ton on my shelf right now from ps2, xbox, ngc to xbox 360 which I havent touched in a while. I put more priority on the games I spend more on like Lost Planet which I paid around $80 (gift cards lessen the pain) and now its with DMC 4 which I paid $90 but I did get more than 30 hours of play on Lost Planet Multiplayer. Now I just have to go back to Resident Evil 4 which I paid $45 back in the day.

We are gamers because we love gaming, i think it's natural for us to stop playing a game when we have the chance to play and experience something that might be new, different and/or better than the game we were playing.

I think we usually give more importance to the gameplay/experience than the story, so unless we love either one of those, we are likely to keep looking for something we like better.

I've considered making a front page post about this very topic. I'm a victim of the Unfinished Game Syndrome as well, and it's very aggravating.

I've given it a lot of thought though, and I think part of it comes down to game sizes. Our increasing age and decreasing amount of free time over the years plays a huge role, but looking back at Mario 64 and Zelda 64, and especially games before that, it wasn't rare at all to "do everything" possible that a game could offer. Many games just don't allow for this anymore without losing serious hours of your life -- especially with the rise of MMOs in recent years. And then there's the further unnerving fact that many of us have games piling up for three consoles as opposed to the one or two many of us used to own.

I might go ahead and write about this topic sometime soon. If I do, I'll definitely link back to this post. You're not alone though naia-the-gamer.

i am, on average, 6-9 months behind when it comes to what games i'm playing and when they came out. i blame it mostly on RPGs - which i'm a big fan of, but take up a HUGE chunk of time. that, and i'm addicted to Halo and COD4. :(

I have piles and piles of games across all formats that I tell myself I will get round to completing one day.

It's quite depressing them being there, I always tell myself I will do them one day, but just keep buying more.

It's got to the point where I'm starting to get a pile which consists purely of games I havn't even yet got round to playing.

I don't know where this madness is going to end, lol
If I ever get rich and no longer need to work then I will DEFINATLY get round to completing at least half of those lost unfinished souls.

With regards to completing games 100% I am sad to say I never do. As soon as I see the ending of a game I completly loose all interest in going back to replay it to get 100%

I went from high school to TAFE, to a cadet journalist job plus uni (4th year, ugh), so I've never had a lot of disposible income. When I get a game I finish it because I'm too broke to buy more than about one a month. Maybe even less.

That said I do have a copy of FFXII under my desk that has been played for around an hour. My next lot of holidays I'm going to give that game the time it deserves. In the meantime it's Burnout Paradise.

Also, I never really get 100%. In high school I would, but these days I care more about having fun than grinding. Some games I'll do my best to get it all done, like GTA IV I'll work towards 100%.

When I go back to full-time work, have more money and have my evenings and weekends to relax I'll game like crazy again.

I'm the same way. I made a post last October where I talked about this. For me it comes down to the fact that I have less free time combined with the fact that games have steadily become larger.

I like to complete, but i definitely get distracted.

I also fancy myself a collector, so a lot of games, I'm just not going to complete, because I bought them for a more generalized experience. Burnout Revenge, for example. I don't think I'm ever going to sit down and play that game all through, but that fills my Arcade racer on the PS2.

There's also plenty of time when I play up to a certain point with a game, and don't look back to them for at least a year. My white whale is Final Fantasy Tactics on PS1, which I always feel guilty about not finding a way to finish.

On the upside, I just finished Kingdom Hearts two days ago! But now i have two, which I'm not going to finish anytime soon . . .

I try so hard to be monogamous with gaming, as time is so precious, but something ALWAYS comes along that I have to play. My backlog is 4 games right now: Kindom Hearts, FFXII, DeadRising, Bioshock.

What am I currently playing? LoZ: Phantom Hourglass. SO MUCH FUN!

My entire shelf is pretty much my backlog. Stuff comes out too quickly and distracts me from the task at hand.

Last games I finished were Disgaea 2, and Mass Effect. I *want* to beat Persona 3, but I haven't had the will to pick up the controller to do so.

I have to honest, I have plenty of games in my collection that I haven't finished, as far bcak into my PS1 and N64 games.

On a better note, I'm enticed to finish more games to the end, all thanks to Live's excellent achievement points.

Last games completed: Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Bioshock on 360.
