This is me thinking out load instead of sleeping. But I have wondered what others have
thought about the following topic... I've spent the last eight years griping about my gaming backlog. I always have about a dozen games on my shelf that I own, desperately want to play and yet I continue to buy new ones, thus adding to my backlog. It's worse during Christmas and my birthday because I usually get at least a few more games all at once. It always seems reading comments from other gamers on the internet that so many of them seem to have time to play the latest and greatest so immediately after they come out. I know not all gamers on the internet are of the unemployed-living-in-their-parent's-basement species. How do they have the time? I live on my own (well with my fiance, but away from the 'rents) I have a couple of jobs (don't ask. It's the starving artist life. I do a shit load of things that add up to a normal work week). Life gets in the way and I go for (gasp) days without playing video games. It occurred to me that the "problem" may be with me; I always like to complete the games I start. I don't have to be one of those crazy people that get 100% on everything (although I do that sometimes). However I like to finish what I start. I've been working on Metroid Prime 3 for months because I have to finish the game. Personal things have prevented me from finishing it sooner (First Mario Galaxy came out and I dropped everything. Then I went home for Christmas, then I moved). It's important to me so I feel like I get the most out of that gaming experience. Coupled with the fact that I play a lot of RPG's I spend forever on games. But I wonder how important it is for the average gamer (or even hardcore gamer) to finish a game. Do you get bored with the game and move on to something else? Do you ever go back to the game? Do you remember what you were supposed to do? How does that effect things? Is it better for gamers to try a lot of different games, or play fewer and focus on beating the few you have? Or be crazy like me and realize that you may die before finishing all the games in your collection? What about you other DToid readers: Do you find yourself in an endless backlog? How important is it for you to complete your games?

The only time I don't finish a game is if it's not that appealing to me. I drift in and out of Earthbound, and I'll probably never finish FFX. But I usually set aside a certain time for gaming, and if a game's good, that usually takes up my time.
You aren't enthralled by Earthbound? We are now mortal enemies -.- (Well not really, but you get the idea :D)
Naia: I am 100% with you on this. I gotta finish what I start, and because of that I have a backlog of games that seems to get larger every day. I'm also a student with a job so sometimes my video game time gets cut into pretty severely and I can't play much of anything for days, or even weeks, at a time.
Sometime it's hard for me to delve back into an RPG after being away for a while (what the hell was I doing again?) but I generally have the patience to figure it out.
I think we usually give more importance to the gameplay/experience than the story, so unless we love either one of those, we are likely to keep looking for something we like better.
I've given it a lot of thought though, and I think part of it comes down to game sizes. Our increasing age and decreasing amount of free time over the years plays a huge role, but looking back at Mario 64 and Zelda 64, and especially games before that, it wasn't rare at all to "do everything" possible that a game could offer. Many games just don't allow for this anymore without losing serious hours of your life -- especially with the rise of MMOs in recent years. And then there's the further unnerving fact that many of us have games piling up for three consoles as opposed to the one or two many of us used to own.
I might go ahead and write about this topic sometime soon. If I do, I'll definitely link back to this post. You're not alone though naia-the-gamer.
It's quite depressing them being there, I always tell myself I will do them one day, but just keep buying more.
It's got to the point where I'm starting to get a pile which consists purely of games I havn't even yet got round to playing.
I don't know where this madness is going to end, lol
If I ever get rich and no longer need to work then I will DEFINATLY get round to completing at least half of those lost unfinished souls.
With regards to completing games 100% I am sad to say I never do. As soon as I see the ending of a game I completly loose all interest in going back to replay it to get 100%
That said I do have a copy of FFXII under my desk that has been played for around an hour. My next lot of holidays I'm going to give that game the time it deserves. In the meantime it's Burnout Paradise.
Also, I never really get 100%. In high school I would, but these days I care more about having fun than grinding. Some games I'll do my best to get it all done, like GTA IV I'll work towards 100%.
When I go back to full-time work, have more money and have my evenings and weekends to relax I'll game like crazy again.
I also fancy myself a collector, so a lot of games, I'm just not going to complete, because I bought them for a more generalized experience. Burnout Revenge, for example. I don't think I'm ever going to sit down and play that game all through, but that fills my Arcade racer on the PS2.
There's also plenty of time when I play up to a certain point with a game, and don't look back to them for at least a year. My white whale is Final Fantasy Tactics on PS1, which I always feel guilty about not finding a way to finish.
On the upside, I just finished Kingdom Hearts two days ago! But now i have two, which I'm not going to finish anytime soon . . .
What am I currently playing? LoZ: Phantom Hourglass. SO MUCH FUN!
Last games I finished were Disgaea 2, and Mass Effect. I *want* to beat Persona 3, but I haven't had the will to pick up the controller to do so.
On a better note, I'm enticed to finish more games to the end, all thanks to Live's excellent achievement points.
Last games completed: Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Bioshock on 360.
