About Me

My name is Naia (pronounced either Nay-a or Neye-a, like yay or like eye) I am I'm a starving artist in LA trying to keep my sanity. I do mostly freelance stuff and I'm always looking for people (even on DToid) to do fun projects with in entertainment. That can be either in theater, film, TV, or video games. I want to be like Kermit the Frog and be part of a group that entertains. I also love blue slimes, puppies and Sprinkles Cupcakes.

I've been playing computer and video games all my life. My dad's a programmer so we got an IBM PC very early on in the 80's. For Christmas in 1989 my parents surprised me with a Nintendo and it's been downhill ever since. I have/had an NES, gameboy (of all flavors) SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega Gamegear, Sega Saturn, PS1, PS2, PS3, Gamecube, DS, PSP, Wii, and 360. Whew!

I am a HUGE Dragon Quest Fan Girl. I did NOT buy an R4 to play Dragon Quest 4 in broken beta-english. I also do NOT play ROMs because I did NOT want to play Dragon Quest V and VI ten years ago in english, not knowing if I would ever see those games in the US. ROMS are bad :P Squenix can shit in a bag and if the bag has a cute slime on it, I'll buy it. I know it's a problem.

Also, Rydia is my hero.

I like games with colors in them aside from brown and black, even if most of the world calls those games "kiddy." Screw that! I play RPGs, Action/Adventure, Platformers, Puzzles, and Point-n-Click Adventure games. I will play fighters and shooters, but they have to be the right kind of game.

I'm such a nerd, I like to keep track of all the games I've completed in an excel file (it's around 300 something). Now that my backlog is out of control I have a word document for that too. My goal is to for once and for all eliminate the backlog, or at least keep it to a number in the single digits.

I have a lot of things to say about the game industry, it's something I care deeply about and love giving my opinions. I like to rant about shit. I'm here just to share what I have to say, in hopes someone is willing to listen. If I'm not here, I'm most likely wasting my life on IRC.

Also for the record, my Top 5 Games of All Time
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy 4
3. Super Mario 3
4. Dragon Quest 3
5. Phantasy Star 4

Yes, I love my retro games

Awesomely Underrated #2: Mega Man Powered Up
naia-the-gamer | 2:01 AM on 02.01.2008 16 comments

Due to demand (okay Chad suggested it) I will continue giving love to underrated games that most gamers don't play but should. I skimmed through my library thinking about what game to talk about next. While the game for today isn't necessarily an unknown franchise it is a game that didn't get nearly enough love and recognition as it should.

Mega Man Powered Up for the PSP introduced a great premise of remaking Mega Man games at a level of true artistry. Not only was there a graphical overhaul with a great style, but new bosses were added. The level building feature was enjoyable and added a bevy of downloadable content for the PSP game. This was a gem of a remake; it was more than a fresh coat of paint. I wish more remakes were like this one.

Unfortunately it did not sell well and we most likely will not see another one of its kind. Many hardcore Mega Man fans are clammering for Powered Up 2 and 3, covering what many consider the best two Mega Man games of all time. Besides, who wouldn't want to see Metal Man in this new style?

I can't really blame the gamers for this one. Mega Man has been a shell of what he once was in the 80's and 90's. It would only make sense to avoid this like every other Mega Man Star Force Zenon Advent: Version Megatron. It also didn't help that the game came out on the PSP. At the time in its life, the PSP was still trying to figure out what it was. Now that the sales have gone up and it has found its place living in harmony with the DS, this is a title that is easily ignored in favor of newer titles.

Despite this being a game that is in a beloved franchise, I consider this game sorely underrated. It was plague with the problems of being on a system with lower install base, burned fans, and perhaps the choice to remake the first Mega Man game may have put off players. People who remember the REAL Mega Man, the one from our childhood shouldn't pass up the chance to try Mega Man Powered Up. Maybe if enough people find love for this game, we could convince someone at Capcom to give us Powered Up 2 and 3.

Who seriously wouldn't want that?

Oh my god, FINALLY.

Someone else who liked MMPU!

I loved this remake, even the cutesy artwork. I am seriously hoping Capcom listens up and makes a MMPU 2 and 3 (the two best in the series)

I really liked MM: Powered Up and MMX: Maverick Hunter (or whatever it was called). If only they sold better...

I loved MMPU. I loved the cutsy anime art direction they went with,the gameplay was excellent and as always Megaman games still have the best music in games EVER.

I haven't played it yet, but MMPU along with the FFT and Megaman X remakes are on top of my "to buy" list for when I finally get a PSP.

The MM: Battle Networks series is also massively underrated IMO (at least the first 3)

If I didn't hate my PSP so much, I might have actually tried this.

@ Gangles:

I agree D: I love the first 3 battle networks...then something went wrong.

Very, very wrong.

This is a definite must buy for any Mega Man fan. Too bad it got bashed for its "cartoony" graphics. If you have a PSP and are even somewhat interested in Mega Man, buy it, you can probably get it for like $5.

@Gangles:

I enjoyed the early Mega Man Battle Network games too, until I realized all the later ones were pretty much the same as the older ones. It's really a pity.

@Scape:

I don't know why it got bashed. I loved the graphical style.

You're right, this game was pretty awesome. I just wish they decide to continue doing remakes, but for the XBox Live Arcade... Capcom, if you are reading this, I only have two words...

DO IT!

...oh, and if you do it, you owe me money!

@Scape and Naia

I don't get it either. People really need to learn to make distinction between graphics and STYLE. It's a cartoony style, which sadly is unfairly discounted a lot these days. But the graphics using that style are FANTASTIC. Graphics should be evaluated for how good they look within their style.

In any event, MMPU and MHX (Maverick Hunter X) were phenomenal remakes, and if Capcom were smart, they'd do ports to XBLA, PSN, WiiWare, and/or the DS. If they could make MMPU look as good on the DS (and they CAN, they just have to do a little work), it'd sell well enough to justify at least MMPU2 and 3. MHX might be more difficult. I don't care if MMPU were labeled a "kids' game" (well, I would care, it'd piss me off), if sales went up, it'd be worth it. I also think more kids should be exposed to the true classics from the NES and SNES/Genesis eras.
