Ich bin 8-bit (partially videogames related)
n0brein | 6:12 PM on 04.06.2009 1 comments

The awesome art exhibition I am 8-Bit has a german lookalike. Ich bin 8-Bit is an exhibit in Berlin but unlike the US archetype, the one over here isn't very videogame related. The artist Jude Buffon created some pixeled monsters and used post-its to reproduce them on the wall.To me the whole installation wasn't very inspiring but my expectations were quite high since these artist are trying to stand on the shoulders of their american pears but judge for yourself

That's kinda neat with the Post-It notes, but the monsters themselves are meh. It would have been interesting if he/she took a retro game and made a scene that wrapped around the room and "looped" -- meaning the two ends of the scenes were connected seemlessly. But hey, I'm no 8-bit artist so maybe it's a bad idea.
The reason people get attracted to the I Am 8-bit stuff is because it taps into the nostalgia of retro and classic gaming. This guy/girl, while he/she created pixelated monsters, doesn't create anything recognizable (to me at least) and, thus, isn't as effective as his/her American counterparts. It's nice to see someone trying to get the idea of having a German 8-bit art exhibit out there, though. Maybe this will attract some additional talent and something serious can get rolling.
