The last paragraph of my latest blog pretty much covers this. You can go read it should you choose.
If not, the TL; DR version: Destructoid is my e-home. The people are great. I made friends and shit. Other sits can suck it cause the people are dumb and ugly.

I've only been active on the site for two months now, but I'm loving the community so far. Destructoid, GoNintendo, and Nintendo World Report are the only gaming sites I go to.
I'm retired from the workforce and really it's amazing how fast your social circle sinks when you no longer go to school or work each day.
Dtoid is basically my socialization. I can meet/talk to people on the site and I also meet some great people to game online with. I absolutely adore the Dtoid MAG crew and am genuinely fond of the group I regularly game with.
Being an "older" gamer, it's not common to find people my age who share my interest in gaming, so the social aspect of Dtoid allows me to learn about games and gaming, to write about gaming, to just share in the passion for this wonderful hobby with others. I would probably never have gone to PAX if not for Dtoid. The experience was wonderful, but my best memories are actually of the great Dtoid people I got to meet, rather than the event itself.
I don't hang out on too many other gaming sites... though I do tend to get involved in the official forums of games I play regularly, but they don't tend to have the same social aspect that Dtoid does.
... not sure if that you helps or not, but I guess overall Dtoid provides a social outlet that I enjoy.

Thanks everyone, especially you Elsa, you've been so awesome helping me out with this process. Would you mind if I quoted you in my paper on this and things you've commented on other blog posts?
I come to Destructoid because the atmosphere here is more like a blog than sites like Kotaku or Joystiq (which I frequent). The negatives attached to that is that members of the DToid staff seem to struggle between their community and professional sides, I can take some of the editorials seriously but I never view them as strictly journalistic. I like that though, it gives me a reason to come here. The CBlogs are fun to read although I hardly ever comment, or write my own. The forums seem like general discussion and I don't really have time to keep up posting there, I'm better at specific game or tech forums.
Overall I feel like Destructoid is very grassroots in their organization and execution, even though most gaming sites rely on their community to keep going.

Interesting marxis, I feel the same way sometimes, but I guess that's the nature of the beast with blogs and the intense forums we've got here. It's a shame that more people don't utilize this part of Dtoid for self-expression but, as you've said, maybe they have good reasons for it. I think that the community would only stand to benefit with others joining in the conversation though.
I wonder how we could avoid Dtoid becoming like IGN if the floodgates were open and the cost of entry here was less high (ie, less emphasis on quality and more on quantity) but perhaps I've answered my own qustions haha.

Like Elsa, this is my primary means for a social life. I'm not retired, I'm currently working two jobs, actually. But I've only recently started recovering from depression-induced seclusion, and Dtoid's frequent RL meet-ups are a huge part of why this community is important to me. I don't even play video games nearly as much as I used to, nor do I keep up with gaming news and hot topics.
They're just my type of people.
Highlights for me so far include the one DTO9K I joined, Ronathon, and Elsa adopting my avatar for PAX last year, and for this year it's been the xbox 360 FNF's when I've been able to get in on them, meeting Dtoiders new and old personally.

E-Home sounds about right for me too. I used to be SUPER active here, with blogging, commenting, and even went out to one of the local NARP gatherings. The highlight for me has been having a platform to squack about this hobby that I love to other people that are generally willing to listen to what I've got to say, whether its in line with popular opinion or not.
I've come to know plenty of people in that internet imprint sort of way, Dtoid in particular, though, feels most like a family or a collective of comrads. Basically what everyone has said above me here! There's real, reasonable and fun loving people behind these avatars, and they do not suck!
Best moment for me is whenever something I write gets frontpaged or kicks off a lot of discussion. Not even so much the attention, tbh. I feel like I'm a catalyst for changing or supporting someone's point of view, and that feels really great.

I've only been here for a few months but already I'm starting to see some great friendships happening and I'm super excited! I have a social life outside of Destructoid but here I feel I can be myself and just nerd out about video games with others who enjoy the same passion.
I've now been a dtoider for a year and I love this place. To me its the only page constantly open on my iPhone. I am neither liked nor popular but that doesn't stop me from "contributing" to front page articles and cblogs, this is something that pleases me greatly.
Also. The absolute shittiest thing about destructoid is the communities absolute negativity with regards to 90% of the news. It's saving grace is it's sense of humour and community spirit.
...I'm gonna be honest, it's just a rad news/discussion site to me. The main page blogs, plus the Cblogs with more exotic topics, are very interesting. But I can't really call it an e-home yet as I don't have any friends here XD
The closest thing to an e-home for me would be Advanced Tau Tactica, although I haven't been very active there for a while...

That hand signal is also how dumb/uncool people/hippies throw the horns...
I wouldn't say dtoid has changed my life, but it's been a very positive experience. Just having people I can talk to about games and gaming has been a very positive thing. Don't get me wrong though, I've met a lot of awesome people and made some amazing friends (... and learned how malicious and vindictive a certain ginger loving, tear eating mexican boy can be) and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Good thing there's not a forum on here for people to ask questions and get a thread of answers.
Nah, just playing.
Dtoid has always been about a bunch of sweaty guys getting together and awkwardly hitting on the one girl in the room and then going back to their rooms and awkwardly masturbating one at a time in the shared bathroom for me.
That and the cocks.
