Obscure Indie Games Part 26: Mr. Splode and the Fireworks Factory [Lexaloffle]
moshboy | 5:33 AM on 10.17.2009 7 comments

Folks that are into the indie gaming scene might know developer Lexaloffle by his other creations, Chocolate Castle, Jasper's Journeys or Swarm Racer. (If not, they are all well worth checking out so please do). This is one of his more obscure, smaller creations that was developed for Ludum Dare #10 (for those not familiar with Ludum Dare, it is a solo game development competition with a theme suggested by the community. Entrants given 48 hours to build a game from scratch). Ludum Dare #10 had the theme, 'chain reaction'.

Mr. Splode and the Fireworks Factory is an experimental platformer. Each level is a self contained fireworks factory. You must create a chain reaction by destroying all the fireworks in each factory and attempt to avoid the chain reaction that it creates. Sometimes a level can be completed by only setting off one group of fireworks, which will in turn set off the other groups, further into the level. The challenge is to avoid all incoming fireworks and this is based on both luck and skill. You are given a generous amount of health, however this can be zapped down very quickly if you are hit several times in quick succession.

There is no lack of charm here and for a game created in two days, this is a concrete effort and well worth a try.

You can download the game here.

That actually sounds like a really neat concept, and I applaud you for giving some more content this time around. The blogs have been really slow in general lately, so I hope low comment counts don't discourage you. Another tip for your videos: When you embed them into your blog change both of the width parameters to 620px. It'll fill up the blog and look more professional, even if there might be some negative space around the edges of the video. It makes it look more like a full layout.

Hmm I've been doing that (changing to 620 all along). Isn't it working properly??

I'll only really have time to do a blog or two per weekend really.. unfortunately the bulk of my week is pretty busy but I may manage to slip one in here or there. Yeah I know comment counts don't really mean all that much.. I'm surprised I've had even this many replies so far, which is encouraging in itself.

There's two parameters you need to change. If you leave one of them alone, it won't change in size.

I've been doing both.. hmm.. do you only have to change them in the one instance or is there more then one instance in the youtube embed code?
