The scum at the bottom of the barrel: Ebay Swindlers

"NINTENDO WII MEGAPACK 14 GAMES 4 CONTROLLERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

This is a simple, yet effective guise to make the average person quite confident about the purchase of their brand new Wii. You can get this too...the "14" games, the "4" controllers, all for the dirt cheap cost of $479.99 with a $40 shipping fee!

This little facade has been plaguing ebay ever since the Wii's launch. Certain people have been stockpiling Wiis in their homes for months, only to turn around and sell them for a good chunk of profit per Wii sold. Where does this leave the people who are desperate to find a Wii for a child or significant other, unable to get any information out of their retailers and just plain cursed by a higher demand in their area? It leaves them nowhere, completely SOL. After weeks of frustration, that person is forced into treading the murky waters of ebay, where they will surely be paying 1.5 to 2 times how much they would have payed in store.

The worst of it all, however, is the way that the system is advertised. Ok, let's get one thing straight...YOU NEED THE NUNCHUCK TO PLAY MANY GAMES ON THE WII SO IT IS NOT A SEPARATE CONTROLLER. Also, the 14 games that come with these bundles are always Wii Sports and Wii Play. Imagine the gleaming smile on a mother and father's face as their child tears through the wrapping of their new present, only to find out that the "14" game deal was in reality barely 2 games. And we all know that shipping a Wii isn't even half of $40.

How can it feel right to exploit people who are truly looking to use the system, as opposed to greedily obtaining some greenbacks for their own profit? Some people just can't get to the store an hour before all the Wii's are sold out, and oftentimes they get to the store, only to see the last Wii taken right as they get there. This is a season of giving. It's a season of sharing. And it pains me that human beings are profiting from the misfortunes of other human beings.

So, what do you think of these people on ebay? Are they just an average joe looking to get by, or are they really scumbags in your mind whose sole purpose is to deprive people of their hard earned money?

If they are anything like my friend who used to work at Gamestop and offered to sell me his Wii at launch for $500, they are pretty much scumbags. This is why I'm so mad that Nintendo has had a shortage of Wiis for THIS LONG, because crap like this is going to happen again this Christmas.

The real problem is that console makers deny the market. They sell too few units for far less than people are willing to pay, therefore creating a gray market of opportunistic resellers.

The solution is pretty easy -- during week one of your release, sell no retail units of your console. Instead take the first 20,000 units and ship them to the 20,000 highest bidders. No resale opportunities there since they sell for market value.

The overpriced consoles are still there, but Nintendo is pocketing the difference (they could even give it to charity) instead of shady resellers. Plus this shakes most of the excess money out of the system from the get go, so when you go to buy your Wii you won't have to compete with people who treat it as a business.

As someone who is attempting to buy a Wii right now, those auctions piss me off too. It also looks like many sellers are using multiple accounts to artificially increase the price.

hey grim - you want to buy my wii? I've got four controllers, and fourteen games for the low price of $469.99, with $29.99 shipping. it's a bargain!

Another big problem with this is that many higher-ups in a given store abuse their powers and allow employees and themselves to pick up Wiis before they are even allowed to be sold to the public. I've even heard of some managers who take home all of the Wiis just to sell them on ebay.
