I invert ONLY if flying is involved, i.e., Star Fox or gliding in Batman: Arkham Asylum. I will not submit to the gaming sin of reversing the controls for shooters, cameras, or anything else that's not flying.

Yup, I invert. But honestly, I couldn't give you a real reason why; it just feels natural to me. I've even tried to force myself to use normal controls because I thought perhaps it would make it easier to aim on a diagonal. However, I just could NOT get the hang of it. Eventually I gave up and returned to inverted controls.
I invert, and everyone I know in real life (save for one person) does as well. Not sure why (other than it just feels right), but I think you might be on to something with this:
"If I was physically holding a gun and I wanted to aim upward, I would have to lower my right hand and if I wanted to aim down I would have to raise my right hand up. This translates in my mind to moving my thumb down in FPS game to aim up and moving my thumb up for aiming down."
Either that, or our brains are just wired differently than the "normal" people :)

For me, I only invert when I'm using a classic joystick for most flight/space sims. For analogs, I've never bothered (not every game allows you to change, so I never got in the habit).
@Rhuno
I tried as well as Silent Hill Homecoming forced me to do so but I will pulling hair after an hour of trying, no dice.
@mrandydixon
lol...backwards just are we maybe, Yeah.
@Gnarlythotep
I have come to expect the option in every game now as I just can't do it any other way!
@Occams
The "pants are optinal" tea party?

I used to invert, now I don't so much. I think back in the day invert was normal, and I kind of grew out of it. I test it with every game just to make sure, though.
My friend invert when we play Black Ops together. He grew up playing flying sims so when he moved over t first person shooters it just felt natural for him.
I don't invert. It's just how I've gotten used to it. Mind you, I've not really played any games on a console or PC that have vehicles in them since,........ shit Freelancer I think.
Nope, unless flying something. Also, I can't stand playing horizontal inverted games. I'm always trying to compensate and I end up doing the opposite.
@Leingod
So you invert camera in 3rd person but keep the controls normal in an FPS? I thought I was crazy....lol Good analogy though between the two!
Glad to see that some people invert but I find it off that you would invert flying but not in an FPS becuase I invert both.

I don't, but I guess it's only because I'm used to mouse controls. I'm like pedrovay2003: I only invert when it's games like Star Fox or such.
Yes, and I can't really explain why except to say that playing un-inverted is like trying to masturbate with your left hand. In other words, it feels unpleasant, and I'm completely inept at it.
Always that initial confusion when playing a game for the first time... DEFAULT? But inverted IS my DEFAULT!
Yes, Always! Y-Axis Inverted.
I'm right handed. It feels natural.
I know some people that can't function with it Inverted.
Also, for some reason cannot handle FPS'.
Not to be rude, but they are not the brightest bulbs in the box.
Does anyone here, know someone you doesn't "GET" FPS'.
Kind of creeps me out personally.

Sometimes the left hand is just needed, feels different yo...lol
@FamousSeamus/BS3 Owner
Both of your right hand/left hand comments cancelled each other out! I am also right handed.
My buddy doesn't really "get" FPS games. He bought Borderlands and deemed it shit after playing for about 20 mins, it's funny watching him try to play though.

Gah I'm the only person here who prefers normal *Hides in shame*
I find myself switching between the two often though, mainly cause I still play Gamecube and PS2 games, and alot of those games force you to use one or the other. I hate having to re-adjust myself to play inverted and then going to back to normal (and vice-versa) it's so disorienting, when I have to do that I usually end up avoiding the c-stick for the first couple of hours of the game cause if I touch it the camera goes crazy and I end up dying because I'm wrestling with the camera as enemies are attacking me.

I hadn't thought about it like your last paragraph, but it makes sense.
When playing an FPS I invert on console, but not on PC. On third person games i think i don't invert if it's only the cam you're moving, but do invert if there's aiming to be done.

This could be in the forums for a continued conversation/debate.
I am actually fully capable of switching between the two settings in MGS games when in first-person perspective - but only that series.
And like others say, I absolutely must for flight simulators.

I used to invert...I always looked at it like this; When I pull down on the stick my character leans back, forward leans forward. The result is pulling back to aim higher, pushing forward to aim down.
Like, back in the day when I played with G.I. Joes, you would lean them back to aim high...god none of this is probably making sense.
I should stop.

i always invert, trying to play "normal" feels like trying to write left handed, it kinda almost works, but not really
Invert. I'm aiming from behind the camera.
Think of it this way: you pivot your head with your neck, which (for almost all of us) is behind our eyes and face.

I invert the Y-axis, but I don't invert the X-axis for third person camera control. This has gotten me to hit a snag in Beyond Good & Evil HD, because there are only two options, either normal (up is up, down is down, left is left, right is right) or reversed (up is down, down is up, left is right, right is left). I wish I could adjust the Y-axis and the X-axis separately. It's very jarring that the first person looking works how I want it to, but then the third person camera doesn't act the same way.
I love reading the comments on how people try to explain why they play inverted. Seriously guys, don't explain. You're all merely freaks of nature. In a cool way.
Invert flight. My buddy inverts everything. It drives me insane. You guys can go walk around on your hands all day if that's what makes you happy, BUT IT DOESN'T MAKE YOU RIGHT! Dammit.
