A Cast of Thousands? J.C Denton
mix | 1:35 PM on 07.13.2008 6 comments

Now I'm not sure if this follows the correct "theme" but I typed it all up and would hate to see it wasted...lol

Plunge the earth back into a dark age, rule the earth with an invisible hand or rule the earth by becoming a dictator with infinite knowledge and reason. A single man must choose the outcome for the entire world, should he think of himself or humankind? How does one live with the outcome that they chose?

"If There Were No God, It Would Be Necessary To Invent Him." - Voltaire

"It Is Better To Reign In Hell Than To Serve In Heaven" - John Milton

"Yesterday We Obeyed Kings And Bent Our Necks To Emperors. Today We Kneel Only To Truth." - Kahlil Gibran

J.C Denton was the man that was faced with these, both morally and ethically challenging, decisions. Would he think of the sheer power he could hold above everyone else? Would he send mankind back to the beginning to learn from their mistakes?

These “questions” seem to be better fit for a god and I respect the person who made the decision knowing that the find the correct “answer” must have felt like a life time had passed. Luckily for me I had it easy as I just saved before I had to make my decision and I was able view all three endings!

There was something about this J.C Denton character from the video game Deus Ex, something mysterious that had me intrigued. Was it his cause and determination? Was it because he could augment his body to run, jump, hack and shoot abnormally fast or was it because he was able to choose his own actions and outcomes? I think that J.C was such a likeable person because he wasn’t really introduced so you had nothing to set a preconceived opinion on and because of that he this almost edgy feel to him that felt like he was covered in a mysterious shroud.

Do keep in mind I played this game when I was about 16 so I could be wrong about a few things and most likely I will be…

J.C Denton, in my mind, was an amazing character backed by an astonishing story that evolved and unfolded around him as you progressed within the game. His story was so involving that even my mom was actually interested in knowing when I was going to play next as she was as eager as I was as to know what was going to happen next. I think this character suck with me so well because Deus Ex was the first “open” style game that I had ever played and it felt as if I was J.C and that every action I made had a huge impact on the outcome.

After being hired with the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO), your very first mission is to locate some stolen vaccine to a plague that threatens the entire world! Sounds like a pretty stinking sweet first mission does it not?

After a bunch of sneaking or mass murdering (hey, it’s up to you!) you are faced with, what I remember to be, your very first, three way decision: Assassinate the leader of the group that stole the vaccine, leave it to your superior to deal with, or kill your superior and save the leader of the group! Now I don’t know about you but when I was faced with these options I had to sit and really think it over and I loved every second of it.

The game can be played through so many different ways with numerous tactics that it makes for some very interesting replays.

I truly believe it was the amazing decisions that you, as the gamer, were left to choose throughout the game that left the biggest impact on me as it was something that I had never experienced before. The finals three decisions that you are faced with at the end of the game were of epic proportions and being able to choose the fate of the world was an amazing experience.

I know there is not much to go by on this but when the theme of this month was announced I immediately thought of this video game and how much fun I had with it. If you have never played this game you must give it a try sometime and if you have never heard about this game, may your soul rest in peace.

Thanks for reading!

I didn't think of JC (or Nota when I was playing, think about it) when the theme was announced so nicely done. I don't think he was the true character of the story though. I think both Paul and Tracer had more interesting stories because they weren't created as blank slates like JC.

I don't think Deus Ex got the kind of mainstream attention it should've and its hard not to blame Half-Life for that, I still maintain Deus Ex is a much better game both now and at the time.

Don't quite get the term Nota.....

I think the reason J.C. stuck in my mind was exactly that there was really nothing to him so you were able to pretty much make him what you wanted him to be.

Yeah, Deus Ex did not receive the attention it so deserved!

Thanks!

@LinuxGuy

Good call!

Deus Ex 2 was pretty bad IMO.

Yeah, I'm against the whole "same game, better graphics" ideal, but for Deus Ex 3 I'd make an exception. Good article man.

Such a fantastic game with a very involved story. Full of secrets, multiple paths of completion, slick music, fun combat system with augmentations and customizable weapons. Soooo many great features... that were ripped out of Deus Ex: Invisible War (I refuse to call it 2 or a sequel, because it fails so hard).

I would have to vote that JC's brother is actually a more interesting character though. Wouldn't want to spoil anything for anyone, but he had much deeper convictions and depending on how you played and what you did, had a big impact on JC.

Thats the hard part about having so much freedom in a game's story though. Its hard to say which path JC actually walked in terms of cannon?
