In every game I get to choose, I usually choose the evil side, why you may ask? Not because I'm a sick sadistic anti-social, but because a lot of the time the bad guys look aesthetically more bad*ss. In my opinion there's a trend happening here. The bad guys usually look, feel and sometimes in extreme cases, are a lot tougher than the good guys.
Bear with me alright? Protagonists in most action games initially look and feel like a superhuman killing machine and it's a complete delight to be him. Until you see the bad guy.
Why is this? In a game designed to make you feel like you're invincible, shouldn't you talk the talk and walk the walk? Instead you feel like you're invincible until you meet the guy who happens to have a grudge with you/your family/the world in general.
My point: Look at a few examples. Leon Kenedy vs. Jack Krauser from Resident Evil 4.
I remember playing the game and feeling like a handy biohazard survivor with a cool-before-emo-was-in haircut. I felt responsible for Ashley, I felt in power whenever I used the Shotgun (I was also afraid half the time... I'll admit... those Iron maiden grey things were freaky). I felt as if i was the only one who could survive the whole mess. Then I saw Krauser.
I felt tiny upon seeing Krauser, suddenly leon's hair just didn't look so cool anymore and I went the rest of the game wishing I could at least try being Krauser. (***SPOILER*** you get to play as KrauserXD!!!!)
Another example is Ryu hayabusa, and every fiend that happens to bring it's ugly face into the screen.
Sure I love Ryu and I love Ninja Gaiden, but I sort of lost a bit of affection for Ryu when I met a boss... You look tiny compared to almost any boss in the series and unless your very very good, you feel sort of violated by them. Do not get me wrong, I love some of the boss fights, I just felt like a bad*ss ninja for a while and then that feeling escaped me just as fast as it came (I really, really suck at the game....)
Might I mention Solid Snake? Well he is a bad*ss, and a smart bad*ss at that... but so is every boss in the series.
Then again a game wouldn't feel like a game without difficulty, and difficulty is often a host to a feeling of inferiority. If you could be in complete dominance throughout the entire game, you would become bored. My request is that games stay consistent and atleast let you look just as cool or cooler than your opponent, instead of making you wish you were your own competition.
P.S No offence to Leon, Ryu, Solid Snake or any other good-doer.
