If you love it, change it, Mass Effect

I thought I'd jump on the Wardrox train and harp on about a game I love, but have problems with. Mass Effect

Like many of you, I loved Mass Effect; It had a brilliant story, great well fleshed out characters, and some awesome game mechanics to tie it all together. But its definately not without its flaws.

1. First and foremost, in a game where exploration advertised as a big feature, and you have a whole galaxy at your beckoning call, I've never felt more trapped in a game enviroment. For example, on the Citadel you have vast station arms stretching of into the distance with a bustling metropolis in view, and yet you cant go there. I just wanted to be able to go to one of these cities, even if it was just a bar and a arms dealer on a small street, it would have been better than nothing. And in addition to this closed off feeling, the planets where you could roam around in the Mako and explore, there was nothing to see and every planet looked the same. All I wanted was a tree here or there at least, is that too much to ask for?

2. This is probably the most talked about complaint, and that is the single architect monopoly the galaxy has. Why does every bloody planet have the same 3 buildings on it? A little variety would have been nice.

3. Jim Sterling has complained at length about this game, and one of his meandering complaints is actually correct. Why do we have three buttons to draw our weapon, and the back button to throw a grenade? very strange indeed.

4. Why couldn't we que up multiple commands for our teammates rather than one? And why were they lost without out your assistance for that matter.

5. And finally probably the games biggest flaw, but not game breaking, is the texture pop in. I can deal with frame rate hitches, not a big deal, but seeing a high res face pop into view half way through a conversation was a little weird and kind of destroyed the illusion sometimes. Never was it worse for me than when I was fighting the blue chick on the ice world.

So thats my rundown of lame things to happen in an awesome game, thoughts?

I agree with all of the above but would add: CONTROLS, CONTROLS and INTERFACE. The menu system (particularly when accessing weapons or powers on the fly) was essentially broken in Mass Effect. The Mako controls were so bad that when I saw how much driving there was in the DLC, I just stopped and haven't picked up the game again since. There was enough in the characters and story and interaction system that kept me going through the main story but to actually get me to inhabit that world the interface would have to be, well, a lot less broken (sorry to be repetitive.)

Although, it should be said, that it looks like the PC version is Mass Effect the way it always should have been (plus mouse shooting is always superior.)

All of the complaints about this game don't bother me except the shitty control of the Mako, the half-asses exploration component, and texture pop-in.

That being said, I still love this game. Can't wait for more DLC.

I really agree with point #1. Everywhere you went ended up kinda limited. The Citadel itself was so bland and sterile, without much actually going on after you did all the side-quests...

My biggest complaint is not being able to use the DLC with your completed save file. I went and started a new file before the content came out, got past the Citadel again, but by that point I wasn't as invested as the first time through, because I was rushing to get to a point where the DLC would work. It actually turned me off to the whole thing and I never bought the stuff...

@Revolt in Colour-
I've heard tons of people bitch about the Mako's controls, but honest to God they never bothered me. Sometimes I'd get hung up trying to climb a cliff-face in the Mako, but then I'd just find an decent angle and hit it. I actually came to like rolling around in the Mako taking out turrets and enemies from afar...

The Mako didnt really bother me, but it still had to be used far to often.

I agree with everything you said there, also the interface was a pain to use. It wasn't game breaking by any means, but when you have to manually delete almost a hundred items from your inventory because you automatically picked up 8 versions of the same gun it slows the game right down.

Otherwise I loved the game :)

I agree with Revolt. I loved this game. Sure it had a lot of shit in it, i.e the inventory system and driving that gawd awful Mako, but it was entertaining nonetheless. Hell I think I'm going to run through it again.

..after GTA 4
..and NG2
..and Lost Odyssey
..and MGS 4
..and SMG
..and Uncharted
..and GOW for PSP

...Ok I'm not going to play it for awhile but I will eventually!

i thought you were going to talk about EA dropping the call home every 10 days DRM or the PC game wouldn't work.
