GTA4: The most frustrating game I've ever played
milescosmo | 1:41 AM on 07.19.2008 19 comments

I just finished GTA4, perhaps I'm a little late, but hey the game really started to drag so I left it for a while. What I want to say is that the final mission and a few of the ones leading up to the end were the most frustrating pieces of gaming I've ever endured. The final mission verged on being broken, on one occasion I died where you fall into the water from the helicopter next to the boat, I had full health and your not supposed to die there, I had no idea why it happened.

On top of that I made sure I had plenty of rockets to do away with the final bad guy, but hey what good are rockets when they vnish into the ground after theyre fired, presumably so you don't kill him till the devs want you too. I hate how the game forces you down a strict corridor which you cannot deviate from. If the game design hadn't failed me I would have finished the game a good hour ago but no I had to repeat myself several times before I got it, the game simply fucked up and made me die.

My point is that this game makes a great first impression, but not only did it bore me by the end, but it frustrated more than just about any other game I've played. Sorry but I just needed to vent, I felt like I was going to murder someone after that.

ditto here on the final mission but what was worst was the hidden packages, not fun

There was actually like three or four different ways to end the stories, I explored the story fully and the end missions were some crap to get through, I too stop playing it for awhile cos I knew the end was nigh. San Andreas in my opinion was the best work Rockstar has done, they should've just waited until it was actually controllable.

It's frustrating when you get 199 pigeons in that damn game, and can't remember where the one pigeon you missed is.

THAT DRIVES ME NUTS.

It took the horrible multiplayer to make me stop playing this game. I liked the single player, though it could get frustrating. But, nothing is more frustrating then playing a round of team deathmatch, having a guy in your sights, then as you're about to shoot, a random fucking pedestrian runs you over with a car. Which, considering it takes your character five minutes to get up, the guy you had basically dead comes over and shoots you to death while your crippled character tries to stand up. To me, the dumbest thing R* did was keep the single player physics rules for the competitive multiplayer modes. Sorry to hi-jack your blog.

Hey, if you liked this game, try Bully Scholarship Edition on the 360! Seriously, if you want to see broken, multiple times on this game, I froze and could only regain control by someone interacting with Jimmy, so I had to wait for a cop to get mad at me or pass out.

Also, I stopped playing after starting to look for the cars, I don't think I will ever get to the pigeons.

Anyways, go try Bully! I'm gonna go pickup Crackdown.

I agree. The way each of the missions claims it is open-ended is bullshit. Any mission involving a chase scene of any kind forces you to see out the chase and some specific cinematic moments and then finally lets you do battle at a predetermined point, which is shit.

I can honestly say this is the worst GTA game I've played. It doesn't deserve the accolades and praise it received and anyone with an actual opinion knows that, which sad because the gaming press got ahead of itself and named it GOTY immediately and now everyone thinks the same thing, despite how shit like this clearly stands out as awful game design (specifically for an open world game).

@the incredible edible egg: Crackdown is seriously the most entertaining 360 game I ever bought. I not only earned my most amount of GS points for it in a single game (1060 I think) but I also was even willing to buy the DLC just because it was that much fun. You will not be disappointed by Crackdown (except maybe in the story department, but the gameplay is so fun you likely won't care).

At least swimming is a possibility in this game. Remember GTA VC? Instant DEATH

I had to replay that last chase scene a few times. 1st time I made it to the motorcycle, but turned the wrong damn way and lost Pegorino. Got blew up taking cover behind the car the 2nd time, missed the damned jump the 3rd time, and finally got it the last try.

The end was crap. The disc hasn't been back in the 360 since. We'll see about these episodes in the fall though...

@Heretic

I fucking hated that Tenpenny chase mission. Took me hours upon hours. But going back to GTA IV ending, I had the ending where the stupidest character dies and left me with no grief. Of course I know the other ending is much more sad, but since I made the decision to go for the other ending, it wasn't that fulfilling.

The last mission I attempted was chasing down a train. I never caught up to it thanks to traffic.

@usedtabe: I actually enjoyed the multiplayer mode. :/

I beat it on my second try. But GTA4 sucked end of story, to me San Andreas was the best in the series, just so much to do.

I've found that the further I've gotten into GTA4 (I've put about 50 hours into it so far), the buggier and more annoying and frustrating it gets. There was one mission where I kept dying because somebody kept shooting me through a building. I kept trying to find where the bullets were coming from, and it turns out the bullets were shooting out of a solid brick wall that somebody was behind. I stopped playing GTA4 for over a month because of this mission.

@brainderailment - Mega Man is hard, but I wouldn't say it's as frustrating. It's much more frustrating when you die as a result of a bug in the game. Megaman is perfect to my knowledge, no glaring bugs that can hinder your abilities. There IS the elec-beam "select" bug where you can kill almost anything with one shot (yeah, it works on more than just the rock golem, try it on Ice Man), but that's more of a player advantage than a player hindrance.
