Getting Shafted By the Games Industry
milescosmo | 6:22 AM on 09.15.2008 10 comments

There has been a shit load of talk over the last few days about game retailers trading games and selling pre-owned games for a reduced price. The games industry head honchos are constantly complaining about retailers buying games from customers and then selling them again with no profits going to the developers and publishers of the games. Now I don't profess to know all the details but I do understand both sides of the conflict, and fully realise why publishers and developers are unhappy. This all makes perfect sense... In the US!!!

Don't Fuck With Angry Gamers!!! (I'm well aware this is a puppy and not a gamer)

In Australia and the UK (and I'm quite sure elsewhere aswell) us gamers get shafted all the fucking time. I want to support developers and I believe I do, I spend a shit load on games but hey I want to get the best deal possible in a country where a new game can cost $120.00 Aussie bucks. Quite simply it's complete bollocks.

It's not unreasonable to believe that games should cost the same amount (at very least in western 1st world countries) as they do in the States obviously converting currency to the right amount first. and yet somehow (probably just because we are used to it at its expected) games can cost double what they do in the US, and in the case of some games like Rock Band, never get released (in Australia anyway). I bought Rock Band in Singapore for PS3 and payed less than those in the UK, and the only reason Singapore had it was becuase they imported it from the US, which is why they didn't have the region locked 360 version.

And the 32bit, and the 64bit and the 128bit...

Again, its like this because it has always been like this, and even though times have changed, currency values have shifted and shipping is no doubt cheaper, those of us outside of the US of A are still getting raped with a chainsaw weilded by the games industry, and we probably always will be!

So a word to the US, gamers, developers and publishers, as far as gaming goes you've got it easy, shame about the pile of turd that is your government I guess you can't have every thing

P.S. I am aware that most governments suck, I just couldn't resist an easy jab.

That does suck because that converts to around $97 US dollars.

I wouldn't say that everyone in our government is "a pile of turd" but the executive branch is certainly lacking in integrity.

Hey, my avatar showed up in an article! Awesome! As for your predicament with the cost of games, save for the japanese, the entire non-US world gets screwed on the pricing and release timing of games. Europe never even got a chance to pay the equivalent of $400 for Chrono Trigger, and that is the greatest tragedy of all.

Completely agree. Until they out-right ban second hand games, or until they make new games reasonably priced, I will always go to the second hand section first.

I think there is probably more behind it, than just "its that way because it has always been that way"

Just be happy you have something else to do besides playing Knifey-Spoonie

Hit the nail on the head. I hardly ever get new games anymore because i'm saving much more money with pre-owned games overall, and i hate thinking that i'm giving money to the greedy shops.

I like my American government, thank you very much. You know why you get ripped off? You have such a healthy economy! Isn't it great that you can now say your money is worth more than mine? Don't you just love to mention it to any American who will listen?

Great, enjoy your stable economy and all the shit that comes with it. The real reason you're getting ripped off consists of two things: Obviously the people in your country or wherever keep buying these games at ridiculous prices, which in turn encourages companies to continue ripping you off.

Second, they need to make up for the fact that they aren't making as much money off of games in America because our dollar isn't worth shit right now. See? When America isn't doing well, it effects everything. You should be praying for an economic recovery for us Americans; it may ease your burden in the future.

Then again, these companies know you guys will keep buying the games anyway, so it's highly likely you'll have to pay these prices for the rest of your lives.

Perhaps if 50% of UK citizen's salaries didn't have to go to the government to fund things like free health care you wouldn't be so effected by the high prices.

Like in America.

@ETERNALDEATHSLAYER: *sigh* You know our economy isn't so hot either? Just because the US one fell through more dramatically, and has shunted the long-running British one out of the papers...

Thankfully some people are having sales, because no-one is buying anything! Unfortunately, if it's not some lightly-aged unpopular game we're after, we're still stuck with higher prices (80GB PS3 in the US = $399. 80GB PS3 in the UK: $532).

I don't know all the details in Australia or the UK but doesn't the UK have a huge VAT tax on imported products like games, and does anyone know if there is anything similar there in Australia. See if the games cost more due to the government its not really fair to make the game companies make up for the difference especially if at the end of the day the game makers get the same amount of money in both markets.

Now if it is a simple issue of pocketing extra cash I do agree that the companies putting these out should probably start cutting some breaks.
