OUYA: The Ultimate Girlfriend Game Machine?

If you enjoy games then I'm sure you want your significant other to do so as well. Playing together is fun. If you found someone already into games then great, but most gamers will admit that is the exception of relationships. What to do then if you want to play games with your girlfriend/boyfriend who doesn't really care about video games?

So far party games like Rockband/Guitar Hero, or motion games for the wii have been the best answer to that question. Truth be told, those things get boring real quick and eventually end up just collect dust or even in the trash. For a while I gave up ever thinking my girlfriend would be into games.

Then the Ouya came around. The Ouya is something that I was mildly interested in and wanted to buy back when it was on Kickstarter, but I didn't because of the wait time. Nor did I pick it up at launch after such negative feedback from reviews. Still at only $99, impulsively I couldn't pass up this strange little console when I saw it at Best Buy. And from my short experience I'd say give it another look.

The core Ouya feature of "Free to try" games made for a quick, quirky and interesting gaming experience with my girlfriend. Being able to try every game has made it a breeze to find one we both enjoy playing. And with a catalog of short, offbeat, and fast paced games like Super Crate Box & "No Brakes Valet", the result was she instantly went fell in love with the silver little game box.

One big hit with us was the game "American Dream." Its a strange, comedic combination of stock trading and interior decorating. Simple, engaging, and easy to lose hours trying to hit that American dream goal.

So if you are looking for a sit down, tv gaming experience both of you can enjoy, look no further. The Ouya is here. Its not without its faults, but it makes up for them with tons of good fun, good games, and even more potential.   read

PS All-Stars: A Short Commentary | The Game and a boy named Spike

PlayStation All-Stars has been one of my most anticipated games of 2012. Its also one of the few games I bought day one this year; the others being Borderlands 2 and Black Ops II. In short it has both exceeded my expectations and left me wanting at the same time.

In the video below and the other two on my channel I discuss the game in general and in particular the character of Spike. Spike in you don't know is the main character of Ape Escape.

The story of Ape Escape is for the most part the same as the movie "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." But with less killing, more gadgets, catching of the apes and time travel. Come to think of it they aren't so similar.

More videos to come soon. Cheers and enjoy.

------
Interesting note: Ape Escape is notable as the first video game to require the use of the Dual Analog Controller for game play.   read

Collaboration: Battle Stadium: D.O.N vs. PlayStation All-Stars

Companies

SCE Santa Monica
Eighting
Q Entertainment

Backup team:Q Games and Capcom.

Why Them

SCE Santa Monica: Because they get shit done. They also have collaborated with numerous other studios in the past with success.
Eighting: They have successfully developed/co-developed countless popular fighting games.
Q Entertainment: Their planning, experience, and unique talents towards game design.

Importantly, Eighting and Q Entertainment worked together in the past and helped develop a certain fighting game called Battle Stadium D.O.N.

What Project
Super Smash Bros/Power Stone based game. The companies would be tasked with making a Battle Stadium D.O.N. sequel with PlayStation characters added to the mix. What is Battle Stadium D.O.N? Its Super Smash Bros but it pitted characters from Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, and Naruto against each other instead of Nintendo regulars.

Of course its already rumored Sony is working on such a title named "PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale."

Problems/Road Blocks

If you haven't played Battle Stadium D.O.N. it might be because it never came to the west. The game had a Japanese only release on PS2 and GameCube because of licensing issues. But with the popularity/profitability of Smash Bros. and One Piece games I think something can be worked out.

Pitting PlayStation All-Stars against some of the top manga/anime stars isn't hard to design. Licensing is hard. So incomes the backup team and make the same game...only replace D.O.N. with Capcom characters.

At any rate I hope there is some sort of collaboration and the possible upcoming PlayStation All-Stars is a AAA knock-out.

Arcade type stuff, not like a BMX sim.. but physics that make sense to people who rode those bikes as kids/teenagers. "

Dreaming: Steambot Chronicles 2

I love and have faith that Level 5, Atlus, and Square-Enix will make sequels to the games we all want. It may take them years(maybe decades) but it will happen. Irem making a sequel to Steambot Chronicles on the other hand is nothing but a dream. A sad and oh so close dream.

Steambot Chronicles for PS2 had everything. It was like Dark Cloud 2 mixed with Megaman Legends and some original aspects throw in as well. The game had a steam-punk world done right, customizable mechs more fun than any Armored Core game in years, wonderful cel-shaded graphics and enough side objectives and game-play to entertain you until the nights end. While it sold poorly on PS2 a sequel on PS3 could of been a hit.

The sad part of this dream is Steambot Chronicles 2 and several other games were in development by Irem but stopped soon after the heartbreaking earthquake/tsunami in Japan. Officially cancelled, Irem had this to say:
"To all of the users looking forward to the PlayStation 3 game, Irem apologizes for canceling Steambot Chronicles 2 and for any trouble this caused. The publisher says it is their heartfelt wish that fans would continue to support their future titles."

So what is Irem up to now? I don't know. Making most of their income developing software for pachinko/gaming machines they don't have an incentive to continue making games. I think they are making a 3DS game but I could care less. There seemed to be a sliver of hope concerning a spiritual sequel when the creator of Steambot Chronicles left Irem. Kazuma Kujo left to form his own company Granzella. Sounds great right? Wrong. His company has done nothing but make PlayStation Home spaces. Maybe the series will find its way on PSVita....we can dream right?

At any rate enjoy the trailer and keep dreaming: Bumpy Trot 2/Steambot Chronicles 2 (TGS 07)

Obscurity: Ribbit King

What is Ribbit King? Its a golf game called Frolf where you hit frogs instead of balls. For my second obscure review I picked another Japanese "sports" game, but this one my friends is a true hidden treasure left in plain sight. Its a simple kid friendly game but get together with a few friends(up to 4) and its a battle of the ages.

The story mode has you saving your world by winning an intergalactic Frolfing tournament. You play as Scooter, simple construction worker from Hippitron, and are accompanied by your caddy/best friend of sorts Picwick (talking picnic basket.) The game shares all sorts of wonderful Japanese wacky charm seen in games like Gitaroo-Man, Mister Mosquito, and Katamari Damacy. So if you like those stop reading and go buy it (for PS2 or gamecube(or Wii).) Oh also after you beat the game you get a whole new adventure too.

The gameplay is actually where Ribbit King really shines. Either solo or with friends its just amazing. The wonderful feeling you get when you launch your frog is almost criminal. Regular golf games have never made tee-ing off feel so nice. What also makes frogs better than balls is you can swap them. Why? Well different frogs have different abilities, and you can even enhance the abilities with food from the games store (Gumban-Goo.)

Frolf is like a kids dream made to reality. The courses(over 20 with five different worlds) are akin to the local mini-golf place on steroids. While its simple to put the frog in the hole, winning is a whole different matter and the real start of the competition. In Frolf you don't win by having the least amount of strokes; you win by having the most points. This rule adds real meat to the game by forcing players to explore the strange "gimmicks" throughout each course. By racking up combos like landing on a spiderweb gimmick to bounce your frog onto a conveyor belt and then next to a snake that throws you closer to the hole you get big points.

The ways to win/combos are almost endless. You can get your frog to the hole first and rack up big points while draining your competitors end hole points by 100 each round or hope to win it big in the bonus round (funny surprise bonus points determined by how you played the course.) A many, almost certain, wins were gone after the bonus round :( Also hitting a frog-in-one gets you big points but can back fire easily if the other guys racks up some super combo.

Overall its a great game and should be played by all. Its golf but you hit frogs instead of balls. Kids love it, women love it, and really how can you not love it?   read

Obscurity: Space Fishermen

Space Fishermen. I'm sorry let me say that again; SPACE...FISHERMEN! So yes this is Japanese and yes it never came to the U.S. but a demo did; and thats what I played. Back in the day, around 2003, I was still a student in high school. I couldn't buy all the time and didn't even have a computer. I did have was a subscription to the the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine(OPM.)

June 2003, issue 69, OPM had this jewel tucked away under their "Extras" section. Playing it was kind of amazing at first. Getting a chance to play a before it even comes out. Not knowing of course it was out in Japan and never will come out to the U.S.

Now it wasn't the best demo in the world being so short (limited to 15 minutes), and having only one stage. So I played it a few times; many in fact fumbling with menus and trying to find out what the hell I was doing.

To describe the I would say you are basically flying around an island(in space), shooting your electrical line fishing rod, while wiggling the lure until a dot on the radar goes off. Then pressing x I to jerk the fish (most of the time aluminum cans or baseballs) out of the water and then moving the analog sticks to the on screen prompts. Eventually there was some sort of boss fish that shot missiles or something.

The rest is like any other fishing video game. You can use captured fish as bait to catch other fish, other lures and fishing spots, and blah blah blah. Doesn't sound like fun? Did I say It's fishing? In SPACE!!!
The only complaint I had was OPM didn't do a Japanese import demo every month.
