WOW 42 comments and counting on my last post. That's Amazing. Since Adding Vampire Hunter D was filler I thought I'd toss in a few more thought provoking anime.
Trigun
Sniff I Freaking LOVE Trigun. Trigun is in the most abstract of ways the story of Moses
crossed with Cain and Abel. Vash is a gentle soul hates killing blood and what not Sometimes his emotions run away with him......and things get destroyed. You know the deal as most of you have probably seen it. It doesn't get the Exposure Cowboy Bebop got (which aired the same year as Trigun along with the 3rd in the nothing to do with each other trilogy Outlaw star)
Trigun also has one of the most melon collie endings ever in an anime.
Pom Poko
Ghibli Represent! YO. In many ways this is just a story about Racoons and their scrotums. But it's actually more about the effect over development and building can do to the habitats of animals. I'm not an animal lover and I'm not somebody who holds animals on equal ground with Humans and I'm farily carnivorous. But even this made me wonder. How much is too much. I expect nothing more out of Miazaki and Isao-san.
Akira
Akira Is about maturity and evolving at least that's what I've been told it's about. To me I'm
spending more time saying "The fuck just happend" I don't think I'll ever understand Akira.
EVER.
Metropolis
As a Mega Man Fan Astro Boy was also something that appealed to me yet I never watched any Astro Boy. As I understand Metropolis was originally a Manga by Astro boy's Creator. In more light hearted way this film explores humanity, Politics and Love. It's by far one of the most gorgous films I've ever seen and even put most Ghibli Films to shame.
Grave of the Fireflies
War sucks War is pointless but worst of all War ruins the lives of innocent people. That is what Grave of the firefiles is about It's about a brother and sister trying to survive as Japan is getting it's ass kicked in World War II. What makes this film even more powerful is that we're basically doing the EXACT SAME THING now. This is one of the darkest Ghibli films and chances are it WILL no matter how much of a hard ass you are make you cry.
I'll add more as I think of them. Keep the feed back commin.
Lain: Serial Experiments
Also, hi
Akira puts me to sleep. The couple of times I've managed to stay awake through it, it was excellent. It just seems that I fall unconscious the second those kids take the flight to the Olympic Stadium.
If you enjoyed Grave of the Fireflies, I'd recommend checking out Barefoot Gen. It's a little older and the animation itself isn't spectacular but its the same subject matter and, in my opinion, even more depressing.
Grave o the Fireflies is an example of not an anime movie, but of a movie. This is a story that deserves to be seen in a theater with its level of production values.
Akira is a vague story with a lot of cool action sequences. I didn't find anything too deep for the plot but the action was top notch.
Even though Trigun was an underfunded show, it was the only anime that made me believe that the main character actually didn't want to hurt anyone. Often times anime runs the exact same characters in different shows because originality in writing takes time and skill. The way that he doesn't want to kill anyone and the troubles he has with it, is a lot more interesting than the "I fight to protect my friends" guy.
Pompoko... I haven't watched it yet.
seriously...if Genon didn't go under while they were releasing this over here, it probably would've been banned for the crazy murders going on in the series.
I fucking love Trigun though. There were a few episodes were I was kinda meh, but it still ranks in the top 5 animes I've seen.
More animes of interest. Spirited Away, (hidden message, dont take acid) and Wolf's Rain.
Pompoko was definitely very weird, but also made some pretty powerful statements once you got passed the ten ton berries those raccoons were packing.
theres an anime i wanna suggest but i cant remember the name now :( argg.
Honey and Clover (I and II). You can't really tell if you're happy/excited/sad/melancholic while watching this series. And that's what makes it worth watching.
Akira, Metropolis and Grave of the Fireflies on the other hand, are great. Ghost in the Shell, Nausicaä or Paranoia Agent are other excellent examples of thought provoking Animes(or Anime series). Also it isn't an Anime in the strictest definition of the word, Animatrix is a rather deep experience and much more meaningful then the Matrix sequels.
Might be an idea to focus on one series at a time, as you can then say more about it. People are more likely to respond if you have more interesting stuff to say.
Akira you have to watch about three times to understand the story. The film only has a fraction of Otomo's story, which is much better in the manga.
Also you should look into rahXephon its really good.
Red Garden was also enjoyable. It's kinda like a magical girl show with a bit of mystery and horror mixed in. The ending was bitter sweet AND there is a sequel that looks like it's going to be insane.
I would like to add IGPX to the mix... I know, I know... it's total cheese, BUT it is from Studio IG (GiTS:Stand Alone Complex) so the animation is really nice. And come one people, Mecha on Mecha action at nearly 300 MPH! It's like Wipeout meets Gundam.
