How come Xenogears didn't set the world ablaze?
michiyoyoshiku | 7:44 AM on 09.16.2008 11 comments

I'm going to let the intro speak for it self

And the game you end up playing has little to do with any of that at first.

Before I get started as well watch this scene. I have no memory of where in the game it takes place possibly farther along than I was when me and My cousin did but Watch it.

.......There's a tear in my left eye from watching that.

Good literature which I do include some games and movies in should invoke emotions. Xenogears does plenty of that and it does it right away. Lost Oddessy did the same. It had me in tears until that stupid Funeral.

Chrono Trigger has it's moments too. In fact if I am not mistaken alot of the staff from Chrono Trigger also worked on Xenogears and I just saw Lucca in a cameo at the begining of the game... hmm

There's just a total epic feel The game gives you from the very begining and it just gets more and more intense and well........just listen to the battle theme this isn't even for the bosses this is THE battle theme every enemy you encounter you hear this.

Now that is EPIC. Yoshinori Mitsuda was the Composer for Xenogears He also did Chrono Trigger and would later do Xenosaga.

Xenogears wasn't my first RPG that dishonor goes to Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) it was so bland and boring and tedius it made me swear off RPGs forever. Xenogears just shattered all misconceptions I had about an RPG's ability to engage a player. Throught it's likeable cast. Amazing soundtrack. Gripping story and variety of things to do (There is a super fun mech fighting Mini game that could've been released as it's own) it just really showed me what and RPG was.

Xenogears even gets some retarded cosplayers

FF VII even when it came out never made me say "I GOTTA GET A PSX for this shit"

While Xenogears is a loved RPG by those that played it. It never really gets the love and fanfare Final Fantasy VII and VIII get.

To my knowledge Final Fantasy games never really get too deep they don't wax philosophic. I could be wrong (so no comments on how off I am if I just happen to be) but
I just don't see that in any FF (Possibly V but when I started playing it V never gripped me and made me say I GOTTA PLAY THIS)

That might be why Xenogears is not as huge as it's Final Fantasy brethern. It digs deep into the soul. Examines who we are and beyond. Almost in a Evangelion like way......only unlike that shitfest Xenogears has a likeable cast and doesn't get uber weird on you.

The ending never really calls for a sequel though But things you find out while playing you could see that a sequel could make sense.

Prequels however........

Well When Xenosaga started out it was meant to be part of a series that Xenogears was included in Xenogears would've been the final or near final Chapter. However due to Square holding on to every IP they have for dear life. Changes had to be made. While there is alot of overlap the stories aren't related.

But it would've explained that intro alot better.

Still.

Could it be possible that the philosphical and religous nature of the story has Kept Xenogears from being as huge as it's Final Fantasy and Chrono trigger Brethren?

I wonder....

It's such an amazing game though. No game since has really gripped me on it's story either like Xenogears has.

Xenogears is the pinnacle gaming, the best game ever created, and will never be bested. This is fact.

Xenogears is rather overrated. I enjoyed the game and the characters but the plot was pretentious. And it got worse when disk 2 hit and the everything went down the toilet. The battle system was fun but a bit simple and you could beat up monsters in different ways but since you could use as many special moves as you want it wasn't very strategic. A fun game but very far from the best RPG ever. I would have been more fond of it if the second half wasn't a complete joke.

I absolutely love Xenogears and how it added both religious and psychological themes. The story was amazing, the gameplay was amazing, the characters were well developed, and i loved the mix of 2D and 3D graphics.

But i also agree with Rininnogitsune, once it hit disc 2, the game felt rushed to me. Instead of seeing things play out, you get to watch the character retell the story.

All together though, this game was pure awesomeness. Definately one of my favorite RPGs that i can play over and over again.

Graphically it's aged like a piece of shit left under the radiator not cleaned up for 12 years.

that maybe the only game I've played multiple times just to enjoy the story. Everything progressed so well that it's like playing a long, well written movie.

Because your tastes do not apply to everyone. Im not just dismissing you here, i mean that from reading your blogs and your profile there, i get the impression that you tend to prefer non-mainstream stuff, games, anime, whatever. Theres nothing wrong with that, but it does mean that the stuff you like is not gonna 'set the world ablaze' very often.

I've never played xenogears; i tried to get my hands on xenosaga 2 but it never happened. I remember spending a good few hours on wikipedia reading up about it though (that always happens when i go to wikipedia...); it seemed like a very alternative, philosophical, and mind-fuck type of story/plot. Like Neon Genesis Evangelion, to use an anime example without being able to think of another game. Thats a popular anime... among people who like anime. Not in the mainstream.

Ajaxender I see what you mean. But Xenogeras deserved the hype that FFVII got but never did and I was just reflecting on the possible reason why

Gears didn't set the world ablaze cause it was far far FAR ahead of it's time. Just like Saga sucked way way way after it's time.

Seriously though...I need Monolith to get back together and finish the rest of the Xeno series. I'm not taking 4 games being it (with the first 3 not even fully connecting with Gears.)

The combo system was fun, but the story did become a giant shitstorm by the 2nd disc. Sadly I never finished it :/

Welltall and Calamity were the fucking shit though :)
