Maybe it's because I've seen Advent children 12 times and already know what happens for the most part.
maybe becasue graphically it's aged horribily.
Maybe becasue in reality it's still a 2d FF with really bad polygons.
Maybe the battle system is too simple.
I don't know but I'm underwhelmed by it and for a game I almost Paid $80 for..... I want to know why.
People go ga ga for it becasue of the story pretty much not becuase it's a good RPG right?
Now don't me Barret is Hilarous. Changing Cloud's name to "Your Mom" provided for some HILAROUS lines that otherwise wouldn't be.
The music is just ok though somebody described it as basically being "Honk Honk Honk Honk"
Maybe Persona 3 and Lost Oddessey ruined me for older RPGs I don't know. I still think the 2 greatest RPGs ever made are Xenogears and Chrono Trigger.
Also while I'm at it I'm not that Crazy about FFX either. BUT LULU IS HOT and Rikku.
I'm quite jadded now alot of RPGs are pretty epensive so they BETTER be good. I'm really on the fence about Lunar 1 and 2 now. Alot of RPG freaks love it (which I'm not) and alot of these same people were the ones that were alllike YOU GOTTA GET FFVII.
It's no one's fault but your own that you paid that much for it.
And, yeah, $80... much like Radiant Silvergun or Panzer Dragoon Saga, the price you may see on eBay in no way reflects the original intended price point.
I like it, but I still stand by the origanl ones are the best. Well to me at least. As far as Lunar I only played the first a long time ago, and I remember enjoying it.
I'm on the fence with Metal Saga anyone played it?
SHIT! Its worth that much?! Ill sell my shit for 50 bucks!!
But uh, yeah man, FF7 was good back in the day..the game of choice is Final Fantasy Tactics. That game is fucking amazing..no lie.
FF7 has not aged well, granted, but the experience was great..it was my first playstation title. Hell I bought the system just to play it..but dont know what to tell you..you paid 80 bucks for it, may as well beat the game right?
These are all the reasons that Square is eventually going to remake FF7, either this generation or next generation. They are waiting for the best possible moment to remake their most popular game.
If you don't think they are going to remake FF7, just look at what they have done with every Final Fantasy before it. (DS, GBA and PS1 remakes).
I hope they dont remake it. It was good. Leave that shit alone. Make another NEW awesome game. Im so tired of everything in LIFE going back to stuff that was great and not coming up with new ideas. FUCK, where the hell have the great writers gone?!
I loved it back when it came out because it was my first RPG ever (my 1st WOULD have been Chrono Trigger but the copy I borrowed from a friend turned out to be broke). I assume it's like that for a lot of people as hard as it was advertised. I know it's the first video game commercial I've seen in a movie theater and I remember being amazed by that.
So yeah, the nostalgia I think is a part of why everyone seems to love it. That and it was the first REALLY cinematic game. I'm sure I'd hate it now since pretty much every RPG since has improved upon it but I have fond memories.
That video was strangely hilarious. Also, WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU BUY THAT GAME FOR 80?
Also: I'm in the same boat as you. FF VII is OK, the only redeeming quality for it for me is the music/the story at some parts. That and it made Final Fantasy a household name.
@MrJunko
I would rather them make a new game even better than FF7 as well.
I'm just saying that they, or some third party, like with the DS games, are eventually going to remake it, no doubt about it.
Ahhh *gets all nostalgic* I remember in middle school..it was one of the first RPGs I played I put so many hours into it, all I would do was come home have no life and play some Final Fantasy VII haha.
I do agree though it has not aged well at all, but a remake will come eventually, Square-Enix would never pass up the chance to make that much money!! haha
I feel I paid a reasonable price for FF7. Twelve bucks. As a bargin bin RPG, that's about what it should be worth. It's got a great materia system, some decent music, some atrocious graphics for the PS1 time, and a story that every fanboy creams over and most other people just go, "...okay." Of people I've met who defend FF7 to the death, they generally are sporting a massive hard-on for Sephiroth and feel that the gondola ride and Aeris's (yeah, I'll call her by her AMERICAN NAME!) big scene with Sephie justify everything.
It's a decent RPG that had one or two things going for its time. I can name a dozen RPGs off the top of my head that I've enjoyed more. I can't wait for the fires of fanboys to warm my cold heart.
If you liked Persona 3, I recommend giving SMT: Nocturne a spin. The story isn't the most amazing thing on earth, but the gameplay hooked me completely and the ability to choose your destiny and that of the world (for better or worse) is something I'm quite fond of.
Or you could just disregard my thoughts completely. :P
There are two groups when it comes to FF7, those who played it new and those who played it years afterward and the thing about those who played it new is that they can't understand why people who played it years afterward aren't amazed by it. I think FF7 has been going on nostalgia factor for some time now.
yeah theyre guaranteed to make money off that license no matter what. Although Ill dispute till the day I die that Final Fantasy 3 (with Terra, Sabin, and Edgar) is MUCH better and are more deserving of a remake than Cloud and friends.
It's the reason I purchased a PS1 and I loved every minute of it, although a year or so ago I did go back and TRY to play the PC version and I just couldn't do it. It was literally like random battle every 5 seconds, probably less that 5 seconds, it was ridiculous, I gave up.
Yeah, it is overrated, but what isn't? I mean the game was great back when it came out, it looked incredible and was epic as hell. From that perspective, its amazing. But I think it's silly that people still think it's the best final fantasy, but what can you do...
@MrJunko
FF6/3 is definitely going to be remade as well. It already did receive some polish in the PS1 port in Final Fantasy Anthology, but a full-on remake is also undoubtedly coming soon.
Firstly, don't be cautious about the 2 Lunar games. They are absolutely fantastic and everybody should play both of them. Its got a great story, the game mechanics work very well, and the voice acting in the cut scenes are still among the best even today.
On the topic of FFVII, how can you say the music isn't good? The FFVII soundtrack is one of the best video game pieces ever created.
Also, maybe you should wait for the remake to come out. I think if maybe VII were updated to PS3/360 graphics it would look and control better. And maybe they will add voice acting as well so that shit should be nuts.
I didn't play FFVII until after it was already really old, but even I found it to be an amazing experience, one I've been wanting to re-create ever since. The materia system is amazing -- it's simple but deep enough to provide for really interesting strategies (a lot deeper, I think, than Persona 3's battle system, even though I love that game, too).
The (first half) of the story is pretty good as well. Granted, things get a bit tedious when we realize that Cloud is some kind of schizo clone or some shit, but it's still compelling.
You being a graphics whore is your own problem.
It's certainly not the game's fault that you have some sort of stilted pre-conceived notions about what the game should've been. From someone not plagued by nostalgia, I can tell you that FFVII is a really solid game.
I buy every version of that game when I hear thre is one out. I had much more fun and better memories playing that game than FF7. Figaro Castle FTW. FOREVER.
@ VWGTI
HAHaHA! Yo he poisoned a lake, just for kicks, then stabbed General Leo in the back. Cause he QUESTIONED him about poisioning the lake. WHAT!!!
COOOOLD BLOOOODED!!!!
Hes the fucking Joker of the Final Fantasy universe..
I do think the backgrounds are fantastic but the in game models out side of battle....they're like 16 bit sprites made into polygons and the whole Chibi thing doesn't work.
Ill say Chrono trigger is awesome..no doubt..but my preference is still FF3. Not raggin on Chrono Trigger, I loved that game. FF3 is just one of the fondest memories of my childhood. Oh and Akira Toriyama designing the characters? also win.
@ ORcist
The materia system was alright..but the Esper system in FF3 was much better. You get to keep and learn ALL the spells? Instead of distributing them to other people? YEAH!!
I personally get tired of the constant cosplaying FFVII/Kingdome Heart idiots. I mean i'm fine with Cosplaying, but people need to realize they're other fucking things to cosplay as. other better FF series to dress up as. But that's me.
The only people really hyping up FFVII is us americans to begin with. It did sub par in Japan. But I can agree with Xenogears and Chrono Trigger being high on my lists for RPGs. mainly Chrono Trigger. It introduced me into the RPG genre and I enjoyed the hell out of that game each time I rented the game. I still wish my parents bought it for me as I never ever could finish it (you know...rent games...saved data gone.)
Xenogears is alluring to me. Music, characters, the mechs, the world in general. Then all the betrayal and hiding going on makes it more the interesting. Plus it's up there with Chrono Trigger for a different battle system compared to the traditional RPGs.
FFVII ok...not really worth more than 30 at tops though. You just have to realize why most people love it is cause it's most of these RPG gamers very first RPG. So they automatically dub it the best eVARRRRR.
I'd also be disappointed with it if I paid $80 for the damn game.
It's a great game, not the BEST GAME EVER and certainly not the best looking game, but I liked it when I played it.
The fact that you paid so much for what should have only cost you $20 is just stupid, though. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to sell my black label copy on eBay. :P

That's like going back to Goldeneye now for it's revolutionary multiplayer. You're bound to be disappointed.
That's a rip off man.
If you don't think they are going to remake FF7, just look at what they have done with every Final Fantasy before it. (DS, GBA and PS1 remakes).

i use it as a coaster

Kefka > Sephiroth
Thats all I gotta say about that shit.

though IMO 2 of the greatest RPG's.

So yes, it is in fact overhyped.
That's semi-amusing.
It's semi-amusing.
But 100% sad.
