I could never finish 7... i've tried.. sooooo many times.
Say what you want about Final Fantasy VII (and many have and will continue to do so :P), but FF7 took the RPG gaming genre and made it palatable to those who would never play a RPG. It practically tricked RPG-hating gamers through its style, story and accessibility (but let's face it, it was the giant sword and motorcycles in the commercials that sold those copies).
It was a large turning point in many gamer's lives because it was most likely their first RPG, so it opened up a bunch of new doors and showed naysayers that RPGs are more than just one-player-medieval-D&D-stat-crunching.
And of course, as with anything with a profound impact, some people attach themselves to it in a way that is...let's say...a retarded amount.
You shouldn't be blaming the "rabid FFVII fans" for not playing the game 10 years ago; you oughta be blaming yourself. Limit Breaks aren't semi-random, either. Haven't you noticed the bar that fills up next to the ATB bar? Yeah, Limit Break. Considering that there were years separating VII and IX, graphically and systematically, IX would be better. Story-wise, however, I think VII is superior... you know, before Squenix went and bastardized everything relating to VII.
"IX is a much better game (and VII fans seem to think it sucks) "
The thing is nostalgia.
You can rant about it all you want but its not doing any good. FF7 was actually a break trough, it was something never done before.
The gfx may be "shit" now...but when you say something like that you are obviously missing something and not really seeing the bigger picture.
"We'll see what I think if/When I beat it (though I have NEVER beaten an RPG before.....EVER"
*sigh*
I don't see the fuss either( at least now i don't see it anymore) but you have to admit what it did for that time.
FF9 was fun, hell yes.
"The Battle Mechnaics aren't Bad if not limited but it looks dated by now "
Doesn't matter if it's dated.
I think SMW2:Yoshi island is the best platformer out there and yet there are platformers that look way better.
It's just something you hold on to. For your childhoods sake!
But you can never win the argument when nostolgia is involved. These fans will ripp you apart.
Just because you don't like FFIV and FFX doesn't mean they are ass. It just means that you don't like them, everybody has different taste.
I'd play in a bit longer and don't expect to be impressed. Enjoy the ride for what it is.
Seeing Advent Children first, I think, has done you some level of disservice with regards to enjoying VII from a fresh perspective. But, I think there's plenty there to still enjoy.
Personally, I say don't bother with VIII. I dunno, you might like it for abit. But near the end game, VIII just felt like garbage.
And like other have said, it was break through for its time, and did most of these things that we find cliche first. Its like Golden Eye. It may feel like ass now, but back then, it was hot and set the standard for console FPS expectations.
Final Fantasy VII was a masterpiece. However, playing it for the first time now, on a dated system, after it has been raped by over-exposure, certainly would do it no justice.
At the time, it was awesome. 10 years later, not so much. It's kind of like Goldeneye. When it came out, it was your favorite game. If you play it now, you'll never love it again
well put robofart
Tetris - Seriously what's the Big Deal?
I know it revolutionized handheld gaming and all that. But looking back, the graffix have aged horribly. The lines are like grayscale Mr. Destructoid turds.
Ok, the gameplay isn't that bad, even though I've never played more than a stage or two of bubble bobble once when I was five.
I'm not THAT FAR IN yet. Just level 2, but man those blocks are doppin faster now, and the line breaks seem to be random.
I blame the Nintendo fanboys and the fact that Tetris is on every system. You can't be good with that kind of overexposure.
I know right? Of course, when I played FF 7 for the first time, the psycosexual nonsence of Cloud's cross dressing totaly flew past me and I just got a real good laugh out of a guy in a dress geting hit on by a fat guy.
Playing old games without the power of nostalgia on your side is always a struggle. Early 3d games suffer the most, i find; its too easy to compare them with what we get today, in terms of gameplay and graphics. Goldeneye is the perfect example - dont play it if you treasure your memories! Meanwhile 2d games are easy to play later because you dont expect much in those respects; you can focus on the story and what-not.
Yes, the FFVII fanboys/girls make it out to be better than it is. This is true for EVERY game. FFVII is different because it was the first jrpg to really break in to the mainstream in the western world, meaning it has a shit load more fanboys than most.
Tbh i dont understand why people like some FF games, and not others... they're all pretty similar! I love all of them. IX a bit less so, but thats probably because i played it sporadically and never got to disc 4 (since i had to give it back to my friend). And also the limit system sucked ass, but still, its better than in VI :P. Oh and FF X-2 doesnt count at all.
You know why FFVII is so popular?
Think of the first girl you ever had a crush on/kissed/whatever. She sure was special, huh?
That's exactly what FFVII is to most people. Their first time, and therefore the most magical. It was the first game to take RPGs "mainstream" and as such is the "first kiss" of many a retarded fanboy weeaboo.
- Enormous open world that you are free to explore with multiple vehicles (land, sea and air).
- Optional side quests that advance the story further and introduce new characters and back stories.
- Finding, capturing, breeding and racing pet Chocobos.
- EnemySkill's, Materia and Summon's.
- Defeating the Emerald and Ruby weapons.
- Fully animated and stylized attacks for each character.
- Customizable weapons that actually change in your attack animations.
- Sweet mini-games like a road rash styled motorcycle game, Downhill Snowboarding, a small military RTS and Basketball.
The level design alone was fucking outstanding and still is by today's standards, pre-rendered or not some of the backgrounds are beautiful, and your objectives and motivations change in style and content throughout the entire game.
You can't just point at the game and say "What is so great about this game, it's old and lame and FFIX is better lol", can't you see how ignorant and stupid comparing games that are years and systems apart? It's like comparing Super Mario on NES to Super Mario World on SNES and complaining that the original doesn't have the graphics and gameplay of the new one.
It wasn't any one thing that made FFVII great, it was the way the entire package, even on the massive scale that it was, was brought together in to one cohesive whole. There IS a reason it is toted as one of the best games ever, and that's because to a lot of people it is.
It doesn't make them right and you wrong, nor vice versa, it simply means you didn't play the game when it was the pinnacle of entertainment and you have come to expect more from digital entertainment than was previously possible on the hardware.
And FYI, if you haven't even gotten out of Midgar yet then STFUAJPG, because you have not seen ANYTHING yet! :D
THIS JUST IN, FF7 IS OVERRATED.
Come back later for more in-depth news and shocking discoveries such as the sky being blue and water causing humidity.
Honestly, I haven't played FF VII is years, but it still remains my favorite RPG of all time. Now, I might be a little biased because of one fact though: FF VII was my first RPG ever.
So since then nothing can live up to the memories of playing through it the first time. I'm not sure whether the game is actually as amazing as I remember because I can't play it anymore, but I know I had a blast when I used to own it.
Well I'll keep you all posted as I go through the game.
I'm def going to try and get Vincent and Yuffie since as a I understand they're both optional.
The thing it though VI seems to be the FF thats aged best of all the Final Fantasies. It's battle system still feels fresh and it's story (and again I'm not far in at all eeither) just feels epic based on what I hear (haven't seen for my self yet I'm still only at the point where Sabin shows up)
I love it when I'm able to play an RPG (or any game for that matter) and not know who is going to appear and what is going to happen. Spoilers are spoilers for a reason, they spoil games.
I don't believe Sephiroth would have had nearly as much impact on me in FF7 if I already knew he was in the game. Back in that day, he was a real shock and the shit he did was pretty hardcore. Now its seen as cliche and a bit silly, but man I fucking shit a brick when he.... wait... spoilers :)
As for the game, it was the first 3D rpg I'd ever played. That was a pretty big thing. I understand why people don't like it, its fine, just saying that FF7 was in the right place at the right time for me and I loved every second of it.
I think hype works the same way as spoilers. They can really ruin a good game. Back then though, hype was usually after the fact once the game had been played by tons of people. Unless I was just out of the loop. These days, its before the games even come out!
I tried playing FF7 back in the day when it first came out but it was boring and stupid. I then focused my time on Legend of Dragoon which came out around the same time with slightly better graphics.
Also Chrono Trigger = best RPG ever.
I've been NOT playing FFVII on the psp the past month, and while its entertaining (I'm still on 1st disc), I find myself comparing it to FF6, which is in my opinion the pinnacle of all RPGs. It's a bit unfair, but I can't help it as it is the same company.
I'm going to keep truckin' and hopefully the characters grow on me.
I've always been a fan of the FF series, VII being one of my favs. I started early with FF on nes and have followed the series since then (VIII being the least enjoyed). I personally think its all in what games you like and what you don't. I've beat most of the rpg greats more than once, Chrono Trigger being one of my other favs. All I know is that, if you have enough time on your hands and an open enough mind, any rpg can be good. Its just like a good art piece, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Finished 7 and 9 (never played 8), and i KNOW 9 is better than 7 by far. The Fans blow FF7 out of proportion for no reason.
It is a good game tho, good characters and plot, but after 6, what else could they have expected from 7?
Oh, and Aerith dying wasn't that big a deal. I bet no one even used her when they had Red.
VII definately was revolutionary at its time, but i just can't seem to pick it up and play it again.
and JDUB28, i used Aerith, and i unleashed hell on my ps1 controller when she sephiroth killed her.

It's art, seriously. I was playing FFVII once, and started drowning because it was so deep.
In all seriousness, Crisis Core is one of my favorite RPGs. I don't know about the rest of the FFVII franchise though.
For some reason, the characters really resonated with a lot of players, especially when coupled with the jump to 3D graphics and cutscenes.
The thing is, Cloud and Sephiroth and pretty much the entire storyline involved in FFVII is perfect when it's contained in the world of game. When you take Sephiroth out of the game and compare him to other video game villians, he doesn't seem quite as badass. When you do the same with Cloud, he doesn't seem as heroic, and when you compare the plot to other RPG's, it doesn't seem as unique and powerful.
FFVII is a good game when you take it for what it is. But since it's become so iconic of the franchise - as well as the genre - as a whole, people start comparing it to other games, which makes its flaws all the more apparent. That doesn't mean that we should ignore those flaws and continue thinking that the game is perfect, that would be stupid and insular. But I just wish that we could enjoy FFVII again, without arguing about it, and without wishing it was something else.
Different strokes for different folks. You should scale down the banner up top man. It's kinda grainy and way too big.
i enjoyed it now since it was the first jrpg i got into when i a kid 1998-1999. just like some people say chrono trigger is there favorite. i never had a snes, so when i got a PSone and it was ff7 for me.
@CypherVR
Don't joke about that, that's how I lost my copy of worms 2, I loved that game T_T
