12 that's right 12 Kotaku's staff has gone through 12 360s. We've all heard about 360s dying in fact if we've all had 360s I'm pretty sure that we've had one red ring on us and die. I my self am on my 2nd 360.
That one has only red ringed twice due to a power surge which was fixed by unpluging the unit then taking out and putting the power unit back in.

The only other problem I have with my new 360 is that it doesn't always completely shut off when I shut it off. One time it froze so i turned it off. Ok it's still on and the screen is frozen and I can't turn this damned thing off I had to unplug it to actually get it to turn off. But that was an isolated incident. Most of my freezing issues are XBOX live/NXE related and most have been resolved.

But 12 360s?

I hear exaggerated stories by people who claim they've been through 18 then gave up and got a PS3.
These people are called.......Sony Viral marketing people.

So what are you 360 tales? I want to hear them. Still on your first unit?

at least half of all 360's deaths are the owner's faults. DO NOT do the following.

1) Put your 360 on the floor hard wood and tile is ok but carpet NO. You wouldn't put your computer on a carpeted floor would you? or your DVR?

2) make sure it's getting enough power. Surge protectors and 360s don't mix If you bother to read the manual it tells you that. find a good outlet and plug your 360 into that.

3. Don't be an idiot. don't move the unit while it's on. Don't open and close and open it again repeatedly Common sense. And also don't rapidly turn the unit on and off either.

4. Keep it ventilated. and if you're going to keep it on it's side make sure you have a fan. Also most of the heat taken by the system is from the disc drive spinning so install games.

Those steps should either avoid or prolong your chances of getting a red ring. Granted if you have an older unit a RROD can't be avoided but everyone else should be taken care of.

Im on my second one, but I forgot if it was actually due to a problem or I just made it up to get an HDMI premium in return for my non HDMI premium.

You act as if Microsoft didn't produce a shit console. 90 percent of failures are a result of poor manufacturing, not user error. I should know. I was the salesman that taught all of these cunts how to properly ventilate and care for their 360s, only to have them come back less than a year later with red rings or faulty disc drives.

There are people who's 360's haven't died, but they are what you call anomalies. It's fucking pathetic when you have to refer to people who's shit works properly as anomalies, but in Microsoft's case its absolutely true.

I'm still on my launch day 360. I'm sure it will die after the warranty is up.

Hell, now that I want it to die so I can get a 360 with HDMI, it just keeps on living! I'm an anomaly I guess.

I've got a premium from 2006. It's pretty loud and whiny, and the drive gets stuck when I hit open quite regularly.

I didn't buy the first X-Box because the PS2 was the console to have.

This generation I got a 360, which seemed to have a far more interesting library than its predecessor, with fewer exlusive games than before. I didn't buy a PS3 because it was too expensive for what I needed it to do and was poorly supported/marketed by Sony.

Next generation it's very likely I'll go back to the Playstation if Sony properly support it from the get go (i.e. don't fuck up spectacularly).

The 360 is the absolute worst piece of hardware I've ever owned. Microsoft released a how-to of bad design. In 2 years my PC has suffered abuse that my 360 only sees in its nightmares and never misses a beat, the difference in component quality is pretty evident.

The 360 is a piece of shit and if there was any justice Microsoft would have been forced to recall and replace every single unit for selling crap fucking hardware. Fucking shitty piece of garbage. MS have a lot to do to win back this consumer's future purchase. Not charging £100 for a £25 hard drive wouldn't hurt. Cunts.

Strike #1: Dedicating a post to Kotaku on a site that is not Kotaku.

Strike #2: Calling everyone who has had problems with the 360 an idiot even though everyone who has ever had a 360 has had problems with it.

Strike #3: Being so loyal to the 360 that you refuse to play Tatsunoko Vs Capcom.

But even with three strikes, I'm keeping you on the team. You know why? Because you got heart, kid.

You got heart.

I've had no less than three 360 stop working on me, but zero were from red-ring issues. All were from video cards that stopped working properly. I had one Elite that didn't work straight out of the box.

To Microsoft's credit, they've been more than happy to replace all of them, provided I deal with their annoying customer service.

Yeah, I was one of those people joined the other side, and I don't work for Sony, lol. I'll spare you the details and just say I was raised around electronics as a child, and in our house, if a microwave or a VCR from one company breaks, they get three strikes, and if they use them up, it's time to try a different company. Doesn't sound like PR or Fanboyism to me. Just a sensible person who doesn't want to deal with a hassle. Life's been good since.

I'm not pretending there aren't manufaturing defects I'm just saying at least half of the issues are Consumer Fault.

And also keeping your 360 on a tile floor helps it since tile dissipates heat. I keep my 360 on a glass surface.

My xbox is only decently ventilated and plugged into a surge protector.

The only problem I've ever had is a disc drive error.

My SNES still works. My NES still works. All my GameBoy's still work, my N64 still works, my GameCube still works, and my Dreamcast still works.

My Xbox 360 broke twice.

Yeah, uh.... I really SHOULDN'T have to follow those steps anyway just to avoid a system failure like the RROD. What M$ did with their systems isn't right, but at least they're [kinda] paying for it. right?

Got my Japanese 360 in Nov. 2006 just in time for Gears 1. No problems at all with it yet. It's also survived the 7 day survivor on Dead Rising (though it took me quite a bit of courage to try it). While I definitely agree alot of RROD's aren't the consumer's fault, there sure are a hell of alot that are.

MS of course should have come out with a much better quality system, but when you see pictures of people's entertainment setup and you see the 360 stuffed in with no ventilation, it really makes you wonder...

Stop acting like the people who's 360s RRoD are morons who can't handle their shit.

I did everything that that moronic list said, including keeping it on a heat dissipating surface and when I had to take it someplace (i.e. moving) It was in a cushioned, metal box and my 360 STILL RRoD the day before my fucking wedding. I hadn't even played it for a few days.

I just wanted to play some Skate...

Once upon a time I went thru FIVE 360s. Out of those five three were NEW. After the last problem, I sent it in, got a new one from them and stopped caring. I play my PS3 exclusively now. I'll occasionally bust out the 360 for the rare exclusive I may want.

I'm on my 4th or 5th one. Can't remember which it is, but the games are so good I just couldn't give it up. I also have a PS3 but it gets very little play time compared to my 360 and PC.
