Competent Playstation ports- Capcom VS SNK Pro, Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Darkstalkers 3
michiyoyoshiku | 11:16 PM on 08.27.2009 17 comments

The Playstation wasn't exactly known for arcade perfect ports. and these 3 games ARE NOT arcade perfect by any means but compared to the KOFs and VS games these are some damn fine arcade ports.

Port 1- Capcom VS SNK Pro
Ported from- Dreamcast

Differences- lower resolution, Load times both before and during fights (not long ones however at least...not the way I was playing it) Intro and endings are video files, Voices are sampled at a lower rate, Music restarts between rounds, possible reduction in Character frames.

If only I had known.... I got a Dreamcast JUST to play Capcom VS SNK also it was the only and still is system Street Fighter III and 2nd Impact was on. So naturally......Pro gets ported to the Playstation in the US as by the time we got it the Dreamcast was dead.

By all accounts this is indeed a great port. Obviously the graphics are in a lower resolution and all the other stuff I listed but for the most part the core gameplay is intact. I had issues getting some of Iori and Mai's supers off but I had little issue kicking ass with Cammy as I always do. For what it is it's great and it shows that Capcom really had a mastery of the PS1's Hardware.
It's not the Dreamcast version but if in 2000 all you had was a PS1, you were golden. Might not look as sharp at the Dreamcast but it's still one of the best 2d games on the PS1.

Port 2- Street Fighter Alpha 3
Ported from- CPS2

Differences- Hit polygons instead of Hitboxes, LONG ASS LOAD TIMES (on Playstation hardware it's 30 seconds), possibly THE BEST World Tour mode of the many versions of this game.

It's a bit of a disservice to say I've played Street Fighter Alpha 3.......of the MANY Versions of this game there are only 2 I have not played, The Saturn port, and the PSP port. I KNOW ALPHA 3 Arguably it's the Best Street Fighter there is, and in modern times perhaps second only to Street Fighter IV (which one could argue IS Street Fighter Alpha 4 not truly Street Fighter IV)
So I KNOW ALPHA 3. Back in the day my cousin got this day and date for PS1. I for some reason skipped the 32 bit era but lived vicariously through my cousin some great and not so great games passed through that hardware. But I digress The PS1 Street Fighter Alpha 3 was the only version I had access to as my local arcade sucked. I was amazed save for the load times I probably lost maybe an hour to two hours of my life on load times alone (not an issue now as save states are the best thing ever) But what really makes the PS1 version of Alpha 3 the best......world tour mode. On the Dreamcast (A version so got it got ported TO THE Arcade) world tour had you tackle one region at a time and you could not replay them. On the Playstation you could replay sections you already cleared in World tour. Naturally when I reobtained this version I went right for world tour picked Cammy and started kicking ass. I was in heaven. For all the PS3tards this version is hitting PSN soon I recommend it in the highest.. While you can't argue the Dreamcast version of Alpha 3 is the definitive version of the game it could be argued this is THE BEST Version of the game.

Darkstalkers 3
Ported from- CPS2

Differences- Combines Vampire Savior and Vampire Savior 2, adds a Character Edit mode, It;'s CALLED DARKSTALKERS 3 and NOT Vampire Savior (in Japan it's Vampire Savior EX In US arcades it was released as Vampire Savior as well.)

I'll be honest here, I only spent maybe 5 minutes with this one. For the most part, it's pretty much arcade perfecto load times are quick and don't require graphics in the back ground, Frame loss is minimal. Very good port. so far so good and it has a really neat Character edit that I did not know about either. It's not as good as Vampire Chronicle but it is indeed a very good version which again shows Capcom really knew Playstation Hardware.

I always crack up when I read your stuff, michi. :]
de BLOO's Destructoid Blog
WTF Michi?

SF:IV =/= SF Alpha 4

The mechanics are too different from one another, to say the least.

Also, one of the better blogs I've seen from ya man, keep it coming. :]
Palidi's Destructoid Blog
Well...aside from the spongy PSP controls, the PSP port is the best one for having every element from every port of Alpha 3(including the world tour mode). Also, it has Ingrid, who actually isn't that bad of a Street Fighter character for someone from Capcom Fighting Jam.

Now if only they would port it to the PS3 via PSN so I could play it with a Dualshock or Fightpad.

Let me guess.... you pirated these as well.

So you "bought" dreamcast and "bought" games?

A likely story...

DS3 isn't a bad port. I don't like the blood color change, and there are definately cut animations, (just look at the backgrounds!) but it's pretty solid if you can't access anything else. All the gameplay and speed is intact, they added characters for the console release, and it was easier to find than the Saturn or Dreamcast versions. I love that game though. Far from "arcade perfecto", but still a great port for PS1 (how did you find the load times short though? Too much SFA3 must cloud your judgement :))

Chronos- Go Yarrr your self nobody thinks you're funny, you are nothing but a troll.

Superhobocrackhead, photographic proof I have a Dreamcast is a few posts down.

Palidi- There was an adapter to plug in Playstation controllers to the PSP but I think it required the 1000 PSP to be opened up.

De Bloo- Something about SF IV feels less SF IV more Alpha IV, Maybe the fact Rose Dan and Sakura are in it or maybe it's the music and the announcer.

TheCleaningGuy- I'll have to play More DS3 and Vampire savior back to back to have a full on opinion.

Wan Sum Dung- what's so funny about my stuff?

"what's so funny about my stuff?"

Because you write 100000 blogs but don't take the time to spell check any of them.

Quality>quantity.

Idiot....
michiyoyoshiku's Destructoid Blog
The Trolls ruin it for everyone
Wan Sum Dung's Destructoid Blog
Well, come on, you write so much stuff and yet like Magnalon said, none of it's proof read for spelling, coherency, etc...
Cataract's Destructoid Blog
"...I had little issue kicking ass with Cammy as I always do."

You were saying?
Cataract's Destructoid Blog
Oh, and I think Chronos is pretty funny. Just saying.
Subenu's Destructoid Blog
@michi
So, you call Magnalon an idiot because he makes constructive criticism?

As I said in you last post... and some posts before... and as some other people already said: Use Spellcheck! It's not a dishonour to use it for your blog posts! I do it too! And Proof-reading! Please!
Shin Oni's Destructoid Blog
Alpha 3 the best of the SF series? lol

I have half the world saying SFA2 was better than SFA3.

and The original Darkstalkers needs to take Darkstalkers 3's spot. That game was an atrocious PS1 port.
