Gaming History

I've been a gamin' since le Vic 20, steadily working my way in time-consuming obsessive style through many gaming systems (Atari 2600, Apple IIe, ColecoVision, Intellivision, Commodore 64, NES, Sega MS, Amiga 500) until I went to college. At that time consoles dropped off the scene and I became a PC gamer with Civilization, Doom, and X-wing, all running at a blazing 16mHz.

Then there was my arcade and pinball games only period through the rest of college, and then... my gaming dark ages. I did narry a thing with video games for the next 9 years while I traveled and lived around the world (Australia, England, Paris, Edinburgh, San Fran, Lexington, Louisville).

When Y2K didn't kill me, I re-evaluated and re-lived my previous gaming progression, buying all the now 'retro' consoles in the order of their release, and then discovering for the first time the likes of the SNES, N64, Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube.

Got into PC gaming again with Aliens V Predator 2, and while I don't mind spending $2K on a PC rig, I somehow have a mental block on spending more than $2C on a console, so that lead me to be a Nintendo fanboy of sorts - the cheapest of each generation.

Got a Cube for Rogue Squadron. Then a DS. Later pre-ordered my Wii asap after the first E3 unveiling announcement.

Relations

My brother Geoff and I have played games together since forever, and still do, and he's Gabe to my Tycho, preferring to blow stuff up, shun the PC cause it's complicated, and loves to pwn in teh Haloz. Although we match up in our Nintendo fandom (and Nintendo anger, too).

Advances in Multiplayer, but No Change in the Labeling
metromapper | 1:56 PM on 11.16.2007 9 comments

After getting owned by purchasing Medal of Honor Heroes 2, I realized something about multiplayer labels on boxes: they are woefully inadequate. The box says 4 player multiplayer on it, which has got to be a misprint, when there is no type of multiplayer at all locally, no split screen at all. Of course you can play with 32 other consoles online, but half the fun of FPSs are playing with your friends... in the same room!

I think boxes need to have some new icons or labeling to describe all the types of multiplayer possible. I want details, man! For example:

MoH H2
Online players per console: 1 player
Online players per match: 8-32 players
Online consoles per match: 8-32 consoles
Local Multiplayer Split Screen: None
Local Multiplayer Shared Screen: None
Co-op Multiplayer: None

Mario Strikers Charged
Online players per console: 1-2 players
Online players per match: 2-4 players
Online consoles per match: 2 consoles
Local Split Screen: None
Local Multiplayer Shared Screen: 2-4 players
Co-op Multiplayer: 2 players

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Online players per console: None
Online players per match: None
Online consoles per match: None
Local Split Screen: None
Local Multiplayer Shared Screen: 2 players
Co-op Multiplayer: 2 players

Halo 3
Online players per console: 1-4 players
Online players per match: 2-32 players
Online consoles per match: 2-8 consoles
Local Multiplayer Split Screen: 2-4 players
Local Multiplayer Shared Screen: None
Co-op Multiplayer: 1-2 players (on or offline)

Super Mario Galaxy
Online players per console: None
Online players per match: None
Online consoles per match: None
Local Multiplayer Split Screen: None
Local Multiplayer Shared Screen: 1-2 players (kinda)
Co-op Multiplayer: 1-2 players (kinda)

Double Dragon (NES)
Online players per console: None
Online players per match: None
Online consoles per match: None
Local Multiplayer Split Screen: None
Local Multiplayer Shared Screen: None
Co-op Multiplayer: None

I know it's kinda confusing at first, but that's because there are lots of possibilities with games now, and people should know what the possibilities are *before* they buy them.

NOTE: I made up some of the numbers here, since I don't know what the limits really are, since they are not posted on the boxes :)

What do you all think of the categories? Should there be more (like for Mario Galaxy)?

i'd hate to be the poor sap working at gamestop that has to explain what: Co-op Multiplayer: 1-2 players (kinda) means.

Double Dragon has Multiplayer, shared screen co-op to be exact.

The (kinda) was just my comment on it; the box says 2 player.

Isn't that better than having people trying to return something to your store because it says 4 player, when really it's 1 player playing online with 31 other people? Or mad cause Galaxy says 2 player, but really it's 1 with a co-star?

I'd rather have more info than not enough. If I did, I wouldn't have bought MoH:H2.

@shipero
I'm pretty sure the NES version of Double Dragon was only single player.

I must be thinking of the second one then.

Xbox 360 boxes usually are pretty accurate about what is hidden inside, but I'm having a hard time finding an appropriate (read: rear) pic of one.
